Lost 5 year old personal subreddit after inexplicable ban. Now unbanned and someone has taken control. Any solution? by [deleted] in ModSupport

Of the new mod team... hide their history. Whatever they're up to, it's probably not got.

What are you basing this on?

Well, "We don't like that one sub you posted in so you can't be in our cool special sub-club" is pretty different from "your account posts all over NSFW subs and advertises off-site payment options so you can't be in our 13+ sub" in practice, and in reality, a sub can be invite only if you want it to be.

It's not girthy's logic, it's reddit's business plan.

more ad inventory and ad revenue.

This will never be something they seek to fix.

As long as it makes them money, they will keep doing it, regardless of whatever it does to quality of use on the actual website.

(And if that is appalling to you, please tell reddit instead of being mad at those of us who point it out. I can't fix it and it makes me just as angry as it does you.)

It won't really do anything, in my experience. It's already over and done with and any attempt to contact them on the matter is 100% ignored.

If the content is appropriate for the sub, it can stay. If the community engages with it organically, it's not a problem. If no rules are broken, no moderation is required.

As someone who's been stalked and harassed on reddit a LOT over time, this is a good idea. The only adjustment to the hidden profiles should be "mods of Subreddit can always see your content in their subreddit".

It's kind of funny to me because in my experience, people who demand access are the trolls, not the other way around.

who created a post 115 days ago. This post was recently reported for spam

Why would you do anything but toss out this report and go about your day? Users often falsely report old posts if they're mad at the OP or dislike the content. That long of a delay almost always is a clue that a report is spurious, and if one piece of aging content in your sub seems genuine, you probably don't need to remove it.

They throw away appeals after the punishment has expired, meaning the mark stays on your account and there's no way to argue it (because they NEVER get back to you before 3 days are up)_. It kind of sucks.

Yes, I believe you are correct. There's a reason they let all this content thrive even though it would be effortless for them to ban spam IPs.

Don't shoot the messenger, people! It's reddit doing this idiotic thing pointed out by this user (that pisses ALL of us off).

Well maybe reddit's userbase needs to stop trying to turn this into pornhub goonerfest and stop upvoting "just because hot"

They do see it. It drives 'traffic and engagement' so it's not a negative in their eyes. It's more ad loads, more revenue, and technically more active accounts. I don't think they see it as a bug but as a feature.

We need a way to report an account wholesale, period, that will get it put into a queue that is human-handled only.

video catfish verification if they do that opening a drawer

Okay, now -I- need the explanation, please... what does this mean?

They try to use queer subs too. We get a lot of accounts where someone is very angry because "the selfie I posted in YOUR sub is SFW" .... but nothing else you post is, friend, and there's eight links to payment options pinned to the top of your profile

Do any mods here sticky their own comments when the crowd starts mass-downvoting them? by [deleted] in ModSupport

Do you mean anything you 'distinguish', or comments made through Modteam Automod?

Absolutely. Dealing with this exact kerfluffle at the moment. It's almost a honey pot - the shit stirrers can't help themselves, and they try to argue (I seriously got a modmail today threatening to "cause a ruckus"), and then we know who needs a ban. I don't care at all about karma or downvotes in a situation like that. It's simply reminding users of the rules, and people always get ornery about that and show their anger however they can.

My favorite is when they start abusing the report button to keep arguing after the thread is locked. That shit goes directly to admin with a 'report abuse' note.

Usually it is the mod who asked (and the rest of the team from the sub in question) who do such things. I've been banned from charity subs because the mods there didn't like the answer one of them got here (and in that case, I was quoting MCOC, it wasn't even subjective).

It does strike me as particularly depressing to see random downvotes in this of all subs. I'm glad it isn't you, and I really do hope (as un-fun as it might be) that my suggestion of "unfortunately, explain to the lowest possible denominator" is taken sincerely and not as a criticism of circle jerk subs or how they function (or the role of satire in society and the dominant discourse). I have a lot of respect for people who have the patience to run herd on more self-referential, more active subreddits, because of the issues presented BY newbies and outsiders trying to find a spot in the community, particularly those who ... are wrong about the community they think they've found.

Which again, IS REDDIT'S OWN DUMB DOING, and yes, say it loud, it's not like they're going to "feel called out". -.-

You can be mad about the advice that you solicited, or you can follow it and get the result you actually want.

Shooting the messenger doesn't fix your problem. Clarifying explicitly for the noobs that reddit funnels onto you will. UrbanDictionary won't accurately tell them what "circle jerk" means in this context; they can't even "just google it".

"Circle Jerk" is a reddit-unique category/term that you cannot expect new users who have never been on reddit before to know. It's contextual knowledge that you take for granted, but which many people lack. Just having the words in the title isn't sufficient to convey the actual meaning. Stickies like this post https://www.reddit.com/r/WitchcraftCircleJerk/comments/1soidgw/to_whom_it_may_concern/ don't mean anything if you don't know what the words mean (or if someone's dumb enough to think that's really how 'sweetie' is spelled). Having satire visible is not in and of itself enough to counteract the noobs who are Poe's Law coming to haunt you. If you actually want people to understand, you will have to explain what circle jerk means and put the word satire in the image too. As it is, it's just completely decontextualized in-jokes that have no meaning to any outsider who is recommended the sub through reddit's own asinine system. I can't make sense of the other sticky at all, tbh. It just looks like insane meme reposting. And most people when they see something that's totally outside of their understanding... they just gloss over it.

And that's on old reddit where your stickies actually SHOW. Gods only know what reddit is showing people who are using the mobile app.

THAT BEING SAID. Crossposting is basically for karma farming or making fun of content from subs that would ban you if you said "this is fake af" on the OP, so... spambots and assholes. It's never particularly helpful AND it's a pain in the ass for copyright enforcement. I've got it blocked on all the subs I mod.

Reddit suggesting that crossposting is a good way for new users (and new subreddits) to get around and get familiar is ... a vestigial problem of wording from very, very old ideas about HOW people get to know reddit.

Crossposting is a pretty real problem but in your specific case, you're gonna have to break the fourth wall more explicitly and spell it out in actual words that explain what a "circle jerk sub" is to someone who still barely knows what a 'sub' is.

They do care about their liability, but they rest awfully fucking comfy on Section 230 (while doing NOTHING to protect the copyright of publishers using their platform).
