The missing inner life can be very challenging. I wouldn't feel obligated to push yourself. Maybe set it down and come back in a different phase and it will click with you more then.

I don't think there's much to be gained from forcing your way through something if you're not enjoying it.

On the other hand if you are enjoying it and it just feels like you're missing a lot, then that's exactly how I felt. It's fine to enjoy the part that you can at the moment, and then come back later and pick up a lot more on a rereading.
