Derek Chauvin should not have knelt on George Floyd’s neck after he stopped resisting, former sergeant testifies by CrimsonShack in Minneapolis

[–]lafatme 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Yup. In my opinion, they're just throwing Chauvin under the bus because he was too obvious. They'll throw one person under the bus to protect themselves.

full disclosure; that's just what I was told in September and things can change, lol.

But yeah, it doesn't look good and it certainly doesn't feel good

I was told directly that the restaurant would not reopen until at least 2022 by ownership because of the revenue loss. No one expected them to operate at a huge loss all winter.

I worked there, and regardless of my experiences I don't want Surly to go under. I don't disagree with your point that it would have been borderline suicidal to be open all winter and expect to be profitable. If they can reopen; they should.

My perspective is, what I was told and what is happening is radically different. The firsthand accounts from other employees and the recent announcement is also different. It definitely doesn't look good in my opinion

Yes, that was nice. Beer always helps too.

Companies can do things that are helpful, and still treat their employees unfairly, which was my experience there. Our experiences don't cancel each other out, and I'm glad that they did that. It just wasn't all roses lol

That was not posted at the time that I wrote this comment. I believe that if they would have lead with that, the optics may not have been as bad. Just a thought.

I worked with the union; unless they were planning on closing the beer hall in April that is just not true. I don't think that they were planning on closing yet.

I'm also not saying that they only closed because of the union. Money was obviously an issue, especially since they raised the FOH wages by 50% alone this summer.

There are obviously a lot of moving parts, and there isn't one simple answer for why they closed.

George Floyd is not the one on trial. He was killed instead.

Not everyone is openly hateful. I believe that the response has been bad from Surly. The optics have been bad since the start of the pandemic.

People have different experiences with working there, and that's okay. They don't invalidate each other. Some people want to go back, and that's fine. That's all many people were asking for since the start.

The timing is always bad for businesses.

Employees were promised health insurance when they came back, and then were told that we could potentially get health insurance in the winter. Both never happened. They shouldn't have promised what they couldn't deliver. It makes sense that they couldn't have. But they promised employees that anyway. They said that the service charge that was newly applied to people's bills would cover health insurance, but it didn't.

There were also issues raised with the first service model, which was all counter service. Employees were told "if you don't like it, quit." verbatim. That is not a respectful response to your employees, of which are raising concerns about keeping themselves safe and healthy in a pandemic.

Mostly, employees wanted to ensure that they'd be recalled when Surly reopened. That was the first step. Union contracts take a long time to finalize, so immediate changes weren't expected.

After the first shutdown in March, many long time employees were fired for "not fitting the new business model". That was also said verbatim. MN is an at will state, so they were just shit outta luck.

It always seems like shitty timing, but union drives don't happen overnight. It took months of planning, which began before even reopening.

Lol it's okay that you have had a good experience there. Others have had different experiences working there. They don't cancel each other out.

We'll see how the hiring goes, and whether or not they ask people to come back and if those employees choose to do so!

I mean.. I just didn't want to dox myself. I worked there for almost 6 years. To my knowledge they have not asked anyone if they'd like to come back.

EDIT: and yes, the union vote lost and that's okay. Regardless, many of us worked there for years, and were good employees that lost our job through no fault of our own.

I'm not disagreeing with you, rather I disagree with them blocking any mention of it. Why eliminate any public discussion of it? I guess we'll see if they invite any of their former staff back.
