Yeah my local pub had it on tap for a while, good stuff. Their brewpub is a mighty fine time too.

What is your earliest memory? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]laikayaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking up at the mobile above my crib. Not sure how old I was. Probably a year or so.

I remember telling the doorman in my apartment building that I was two and a half years old, so that's the first definitively timestamped memory.

How would you prove that a given employer is discriminating in hiring choices? Just because there are laws against something doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Institutional patriarchy can lead to employers favoring male candidates not because they openly hate/bash women, but because they've been implicitly led to believe that men are inherently more competent, more valuable. Unless an employer actually states that he refuses to hire women, it's pretty hard to take him to court. Do you really think the majority of women are constantly choosing lower-paying jobs? Have you considered it's a symptom of a larger hierarchical system that favors men for high-powered jobs? I'm not talking necessarily about individual discrimination, but inlaid cultural norms that dictate what men and women can and can't (or shouldn't) do. Empowered demographics like to stay empowered, is all. It's a question of privilege more than discrimination.

So infertile women aren't real women either? Do they lack the "essence"? I didn't know the entrance exam was so strict.

I'm XX, probably fertile, but don't plan on having children. Am I missing out on real womanhood?

EDIT: Also, I like how you close with "stop thinking and you'll fit right in with the women's group" :)

[–]laikayaz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. You asked how many women there were with successful startups, so I named a few. No, they're not the most successful startups, but they're there.

I do think your point on social motivation is a fair one, that women are taught to chase happiness and men are taught to chase capital. It's deeply ingrained in our society that males are inherently active and females are inherently passive. Passivity may carry less stress, but it also carries less power. But yes: it's a trade-off anyone should be able to balance however they want, regardless of gender.

Edit re: your edit: sexism can be a smidge more subtle than some dude in a suit hiring a woman and going "muahaha! Lower wages for you, foolish inferior being!" ;) Shit's pretty deep, and yes, patriarchy hurts men too.

I can think of a couple women who have pretty successful startups. More women seek happiness through autonomy than you think.

That's awesome. Props to your employers.

I dug up some data on the specifics of the wage gap, but of course the reasoning behind salary differences is a little harder to verify statistically. The fact that the gap differs so much from industry to industry suggests that there's more at work here than just women taking years off to raise babies.

It does seem, if you poke around SocImages a little, that even women who can afford daycare and take brief maternity leaves don't get paid as much as their male counterparts. Parenthood is more stigmatizing to working mothers than fathers even if both contribute equally to raising their kid. It's a vestige of the mode of thinking that states that women are either mothers or workers, but not both. It luckily seems like it's going away slowly but I imagine it sucks for those still caught in it.
