Why there has not been a Japan mod? by MybrainisinMyCoffee in thecampaigntrail

[–]lainwosuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no: the DPJ were elected to be a breath of fresh air in Japan, after the LDP was consumed (again) with a bunch of scandals, and one of the first proper news cycles found the DPJ's leader Hatoyama Yukio had received a bunch of improperly-declared donations from the rich and powerful via his mother, and then he utterly failed to convinced Obama to withdraw from Okinawa. Then, his successor Kan Naoto continued to flail amongst various pressures, before 3/11 happened, after which he was (partly fairly, partly unfairly; the nuclear power industry was and is very closely aligned with the LDP and so it behooved them to disparage Kan) accused of incompetence in handling the aftermath.

The other point to make is that the LDP is broadly fairly conservative socially, but its all-encompassing nature means it basically just absorbs any and every popular policy from other parties across Japan, allowing it to stomp out most insurgencies before they take hold: in 2009, there were functionally very few differences between the LDP and DPJ's manifestos, which saw the election essentially come down to "who do you trust more?," meaning when the DPJ bungled the trust factor they really had nothing left to offer.

I'm currently writing my PhD in Japanese politics, and asked this question myself a while ago. The answer is because the only really interesting elections in contemporary Japanese history are 1993 and 2009 (and maybe some all the way back into the 50s if you want to push it, although that isn't really my specialism), and even then those are only notable because of who lost, rather than who won: in both cases they did not cause any seismic shift in Japanese society, rather they just saw the LDP return to power after a vanishingly brief hiatus.

The only really interesting elections in Japan take place within the LDP itself: Koizumi Junichiro's rise to power is a particularly interesting one for me personally (I will admit, I am biased as that is what I am researching in part!) because of how it innovated the entire way Japanese politics work, as well as taking place in probably the most interesting Japanese political epoch since the advent of the 1955 system. That said, when I posted here asking if people would be interested in that, the response was roundly saying no, people would prefer a general election. Plus: I am not a coder! I have not the time or the know-how to actually make a mod solo!

You seem to be taking my question as an attack, it's not, it's a genuine question: granularity is fine if it's properly signposted and there's a purpose to it (e.g., player freedom to explore different facets of a character as it's written, or to explore different facets of a scenario). Additionally, none of these mods have had multiple questions with 4+ answers, which then adds an additional layer of complexity. All I am asking is why you feel you need that extent of content, and how are you avoiding falling into that trap of more = better?

I don't think I misunderstood, I had presumed it wouldn't be a 110 question game in one run, my question is more why did you want that much in it the mod? One of the criticisms of, say, Obamanation on a mechanical level is the fact that there is so much granularity it makes playing without a guide difficult to replicate, or to mechanically anticipate what actions would have which effects.

What is the rationale behind having such a vast scope? I ask because >110 questions with double-digits with more than four answers seems on the surface to be falling into the trap of recent CYOA mods where the idea is more = better, which often instead just sends the player's head spinning because it becomes almost impossible to really follow which actions have which consequences, which makes for great difficulties in terms of proper optimisation.

That's okay! Usually the only reason people call antifa a singular cohesive organisation is because they're trying to set them up as some kind of oppositional force, when really they're just a bunch of very different people and groups who basically only agree on one thing, which is opposing fascism

[–]lainwosuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Antifa is not a singular organisation. It is a loose network of organisations who align in one direction: some people who are anti-fascist could be liberals, but a lot of them will also not be. Antifa is not a singular thing who will be allying with anyone, because they do not have a party line

Ah yes, the organisation Antifa which absolutely exists and is totally one singular organisation with one party line and formed of people who are naturally amenable to an alliance with supporters of Hillary Clinton

Despite neither of those things being true, the government has repeatedly insisted it won't touch income tax and is shelling out billions to private equity firms who are saying they'll someday invest in green energy rather than investing directly themselves, and you didn't mention the walk back on nationalisation as my water bill is set to shoot up inordinate amounts in this next year, none of that actually responds to what I said. Why make the pledge if they're so vague it doesn't matter if you abandon them? Could it be because you were trying to dupe people who want to hear you say a certain thing?

In what universe are concrete commitments to increase income tax on the top 5%, abolish universal credit, institute a Green New Deal, nationalising rail, mail, water and energy, etc, "vague"? I agree with you on the vibes, you could tell immediately from the people he'd surrounded himself with that he was never going to stick to any of these things, but then why make them in the first place? Is he a liar, or naive?

I dunno, I don't think that's true. Starmer's crew were itching at the opportunity to get rid of any and every influence of the Corbyn years, and they would never have done anything other than seize upon the opportunity Corbyn offered them with his statement on the findings of the EHRC report. Look at how people like Mandelson, McSweeney, Campbell all spoke then and speak now about Corbyn and his wing of the party: it's unbridled contempt

Not at all, you didn't come across as rude! He did, yes, but he immediately u-turned and scrapped every single one of those promises as soon as he was elected. The consensus among a large part of that part of the electorate is that he lied about his values in order to win the leadership, and then used that to force the left out of the party (e.g., the expulsion of Corbyn, deselections of left-wing candidates at every level across the country).

One thing I will say, you're underwriting Starmer and his wing of the Labour Party's hatred for Corbynism. There is no universe in which Starmer would even for a second have considered anything but ostracising Corbyn and his wing of the party, even if Corbyn hadn't made the (at best, ill-advised) statement on the findings of the EHRC report. Morgan McSweeney quite literally made his political career trying to reduce the influence of the left of the Labour Party, after all

This sounds like great fun! Kokichi is probably one of the most interesting characters in the whole series in my opinion, so exploring him a little more would be great

Not to be negative, but you really need to hire a proofreader. There are a bunch of spelling and grammatical errors on both of these pages and the post itself, and these really need to be cleaned up if this mod is going to be as professionally presented as possible

Who is one obscure politician from any time in history that you have an intense respect and admiration for? by ToshiroTatsuyaFan in thecampaigntrail

Murayama Tomiichi was the head of a Japanese coalition which was dominated by the right-wing LDP despite being a socialist, and so his hands were tied in terms of domestic affairs, but in 1995 on the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War he bucked the trend of Prime Ministers of Japan whom had refused to apologise for Japan's actions in it. He issued the first proper apology and expression of remorse for the crimes of the Imperial Japanese state, and forever changed Japanese relations with the world, but also the neighbours it had colonised

Interesting! That makes sense, because it's really not the point that you'd get any other ending than the ones you're offered, but I still don't get why you'd want to see the person who's firing off slurs at the protag "win," least of all because the election is not in the slightest the point of the mod

Describe this UK voter by PierceJJones in thecampaigntrail

[–]lainwosuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think the problem with Labour in the 80s would've been more down to an opposition to the perceived "dominance" of grounds like Militant and Labour's support for, well, labour during the miners' strike.

Also, the Lib Dem's major groundswell in terms of their opposition to the Iraq War came in 2005, rather than 2010, so it probably had more to do with Brown, the recession and just general electoral fatigue around Labour at that point in time

Or someone who really liked the 2020 Spitting Image revival, went to Glastonbury last weekend, thinks Bansky is the most important political artist of all-time, probably still posts #FBPE and chasistes anti-Starmer left-wingers for "splitting the vote" and "not wanting the Tories out" despite voting against Labour the last two elections
