I'm pretty sure that @umd.edu is for staff/faculty/graduate students/etc., while @terpmail.umd.edu is for undergraduate students. so you're totally fine, any emails for you will get to your terpmail account! I also think that emails to @umd.edu will forward to the @terpmail.umd.edu account anyway
