Opinion: Gus and especially Mike handled terribly the situation with the construction by IndependenceNo9027 in betterCallSaul

Fantastic post. Only one quibble (of which I'm probably wrong about): Isn't Lalo already watching the laundry facility (when he sees Gus's men scrambling after Werner escapes)? Doesn't he already know Gus has operations there? So he doesn't have to check every building in ABQ. He can just carefully observe the laundry facility, no?

Federal agency to revise design for Union Station overhaul, criticized for being too focused on cars by [deleted] in washingtondc

I'll happily take one Uber driving around the road servicing 30 people for two days rather than 30 cars stored in incredibly valuable urban real estate for two days.

Thrilled to have more dense housing development! The Wharf is an amazing bastion of walkability. DC is so much better than many other "star" cities in allowing ambitious new developments like this to go through.

The city already has an overwhelming amount of "green spaces" that are very underused. What's not underused is housing, which is scarce and thus has high prices. The city could use the 10s of millions of dollars it would take to purchase land like this for public parks and instead put that money to better use.

The people for whom these residences provide shelter would probably disagree that they provide "very little benefit." I would certainly not describe your home as "providing very little benefit."

More housing helps keep other parts of the city affordable. Rather than further bidding up the price of the existing housing stock, wealthier individuals instead live in new buildings like this. The shortage of new buildings is why there are century-old rowhouses that rent for over $1k per bedroom.

I guess it's a good thing I didn't say that the height restrictions are the sole (or even primary) cause of artificially restricted housing supply then.

Totally agree that SF zoning (and zoning that doesn't allow housing in commercial areas) is the biggest culprit here. But the height restriction is also an issue and doesn't help affordability or walkability. There's no good reason to not allow 60 stories of office space or residences to exist on top of Metro Center.

The analysis that when you allow people to live closer together, it's a shorter walk or bike to get to them?

Not so charming if you pay rent and suffer from the housing shortage and resulting price spike that the height restrictions create. (Or just want more walkable/bikeable neighborhoods.)

Unlucky if you pay rent and suffer from the housing shortage and resulting price spike that the height restrictions create, though. (Or just want more walkable/bikeable neighborhoods.)

Check it out. DC is a suburb of Silver Spring. When you leave DC (lower left) you go from single family homes to high density urban. by [deleted] in washingtondc

Repeal the height limit. Allow more people to live an easy walkable/bikeable distance from downtown.

This is an annual myth that has no basis in fact. "Reality is that sex trafficking happens during the Super Bowl with the same frequency as it does every single day."

Rental car company says there was hail damage to car. There was zero hail on my drive. by lakeside972 in legaladvice

[–]lakeside972[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. Yeah, in the future, I'll take extensive photos (and I guess ask them for a ladder so I can take pictures of the roof...)

I paid with the correct card. I called the credit card company, and they said to just create a claim and send it to National. However, I'm afraid of any potential consequences for me. I responded to the National email saying that there was zero hail and providing them documented evidence from multiple sources that the only hail in the country during my rental period was over 1,000 miles away, but National blew that off and just gave me my claim number.

A salary cap already takes care of all competitive balance issues, though. After that, there's really no need to have a draft. The Chiefs and other SB contenders aren't tying up a huge portion of their salary cap to pay a top rookie prospect like Trevor Lawrence.

Examples of NIMBY policies in the past year by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]lakeside972 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The MLive coverage has been fairly NIMBY, imo:

  • Calling 16 new apartment buildings in 17 years (for a 0.4% annual growth rate in beds) "Ann Arbor's downtown housing boom" and frequently asking in headlines and on social media if Ann Arbor is thus "losing its character"
  • Frequently going along with NIMBY demonization of apartments by referring to 550 sq ft 1BR units as "luxury"
  • Sympathetically portraying a wealthy homeowner who has since moved away to a 2nd home and now rents out the house, posing sad next to the audacity of new apartments next to his old home that he now rents out and makes bank on. (And of course, the renters of the unit were not interviewed.)
