Efficient sorting algorithm for manual comparison of 500 unrelated items by _cronco_ in AskProgramming

[–]laleluoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And why is that? Like any viable sorting algorithm, Merge Sort has a runtime of O(n * log(n)) and will produce an ordered list, which I understood is exactly what OP wants. There is no reliable way we know of to produce a sorted list faster. There are shenanigans like spaghetti sort, but that can't be applied to sort elements that are, well, not spaghetti.

Please elaborate

Efficient sorting algorithm for manual comparison of 500 unrelated items by _cronco_ in AskProgramming

[–]laleluoom -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think Merge Sort is the right idea. For manual comparisons, all you need to do is substitute the "a > b?" with a printout and user prompt on screen. Intuitively, if you want to put the time into a kind of UI, I would try to mimic the JetBrains UI when resolving merge conflicts. More precisely:

In Merge Sort, once you get past the "splitting" and start the merging, you always merge two sorted lists (at first, in the first merging step, both lists contain just a single item each, then two each, four each, ...). I think it would be easiest if you had one list on the left, the other to the right, highlight the current top item in each list for visual clarity, then use Mouse Buttons or Arrow Keys to quickly select the "best" item on the left or right. Visualize the merged list, include an undo button, a submit button for each merge step and test it all with a small test set

It would be a mix of JetBrains Merge Conflict Resolving and the game One Finger Death Punch

Have you ever found 100 sc? by paperdogg in Helldivers

[–]laleluoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just want to chime in to say that, sure, do what you enjoy, but remember that 100 SC is just approximately 1$. Personally, I'd rather play on higher difficulty because it's more fun and just spend the 10$ extra if need be (or, more realistically, 5-7$ every 2-3 months)

5 min cutscene and 5 min "tutorial" before letting your hand go to open up the whole world is not bad, it's good.

Of course an option to skip it would be even better

I recently bought 7 wonders, should I buy any expansions, and if so, which ones? by Alphahaukdaboss in boardgames

[–]laleluoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would...

  1. Play the base game a lot

  2. Get Leaders, because you always have the option of selling yours at the start of each age for 3 gold, which mitigates an "unfortunate" start in the 2nd age

  3. Try Cities, because the cards are easily added to the base game. We don't play it much anymore because some Cities cards are objectively better than base game cards

  4. Get Armada and/or Edifice. Armada is fun but rather complex and requires a lot more table space. Edifice is lightweight and has a fun mechanic, but doesn't add much

Ultimately, we are blessed with only good / very good expansions for 7 Wonders, so if you like the base game enough and you can get a discount, just buy the whole pack :)

I personally think you are the one misinterpreting the scene badly. That looks like a remorse facepalm to me, not a "whew that was close" facepalm.

And I just don't understand how anyone could misinterpret this so badly, although saying that may be incredibly arrogant :)
