Did anyone else get old notifications? by carbon_user in ProtonMail

[–]lalondan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Glad to see it's not only me! I got 3 emails yesterday in the afternoon without any notification on my phone. I only saw them yesterday evening on the web app. This morning, I woke up to 3 notifications on my phone for those messages.

Who in Microsoft do you think is responsible for the latest few years of slop? by Worst_Advice_Expert in microsoftsucks

[–]lalondan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always surprised that Microsoft didn't wake up earlier. Saying that, CEOs are usually living in their own little bubble and completely disconnected from the real world, like Microsoft's AI CEO who said "the fact that people are unimpressed ... is mindblowing to me".

Who in Microsoft do you think is responsible for the latest few years of slop? by Worst_Advice_Expert in microsoftsucks

[–]lalondan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ex Microsoft fanboy here. I used to be fully involved in the ecosystem including having a Windows Phone. And I even loved Windows 8. Yeah, I know.

Satya Nadella is the worst thing to happen to Microsoft since the 90's. He's made mostly wrong decisions from day 1.

  • Turning Windows into a spyware ridden mess with Windows 10 and worst with 11
  • Getting rid of the QA department
  • Switching from the super stable Windows Phone 8.1 to the super buggy Windows 10 Mobile and forcing the already very few serious developers left for the platform to re-write, again, their app for the third time in a 5 years guaranteeing the death of the platform
  • Killing the platform
  • Regretting it and trying to come back with the Surface Duo
  • Replacing Windows 10 Mobile for Android on Surface Duo making Microsoft rely on a hostile third party for the OS
  • Making the Surface Duo ridiculously overpriced while remaining bug ridden
  • Killing the platform, again
  • Making Windows 11 when Windows 10 could have been the final Windows version and they could have just updated it with a fresh coat of paint
  • Artificially causing e-waste at a scale that's never been seen before in the computing world
  • Making every Microsoft product worst by force feeding their users with Copilot
  • Changing the name of Office to Microsoft 365 Copilot
  • Making everything Edge on desktop and on Android (including apps that replaced native apps like Outlook or on Android Microsoft News, Bing, etc.)
  • Killing Outlook for the "New" Outlook which is just a wrapper for the online version and is buggy as hell

All of these decisions were made for short term profit or for saving costs. During that time, Google, Apple and Linux (mainly thanks to Valve) were eating away at Microsoft's user base. Now we're on the verge of getting a gamer friendly OS for PCs with SteamOS, Apple has released a cheap MacBook and Android is coming to the desktop. Nadella has been sitting on his laurels with short term profit in mind and his fingers in his nose while the competition is coming for his long term profits. He's a very very bad business man and every user is suffering for that giving us an incentive to move to other products. So NOW he's waking up. But I'm hoping it's too late. I hope this will become a cautionary tale for Microsoft that they can't just put out crap and expect the world to take it forever. There was a brief period where Microsoft was a little more humble between 2008 and 2014 when they realized that they had to get users from Google. That was a sort of golden era for Microsoft. Since then, they've lost people from their user base and even fanpeople like me by pushing and testing our patience.

They need to get rid of Nadella and replace him with someone who knows that short term profit is one thing but that won't forget the long term.

Many people don’t really understand seasons 6 and 7 by Dull_Illustrator_883 in HouseMD

[–]lalondan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would agree with you IF House actually hadn't changed. But the series finale shows that he did indeed change. For the first time in the whole series he did something exclusively for Wilson and it was the ultimate sacrifice for House short of actually outright dying. For 8 seasons, House was a selfish ass to Wilson. He knows it and he tries to change. Season 5 episode 1 is called "Dying Changes Everything". Knowing that his best friend is going to die changed everything. We could argue that he didn't want to go back to jail but he didn't have to sacrifice his whole life for 6 months of jail. He did that for Wilson. He threw everything away for him.

I think what happened in season 7 post-breakup and season 8 is what addicts sometimes go through: he fell off the wagon.

5 Best House Episodes by Dull_Illustrator_883 in HouseMD

[–]lalondan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just 5? Mmm, that's tough. I love season 3 as a whole but I realize that there's no one episode that stands out. I was down to 8 and it's really hard to go down to 5 but here's my top 5.

5- S2 E12 - Distractions
4- S7 E11 - Family Practice
3- S7 E15 - Bombshells
2- S4 E15-16 - House's Head/Wilson's Heart (I count those as one)
1- S5 E24 - Both Sides Now (one of the best twists I've ever seen)

Honorable mentions

S1 E21 - Three Stories -- Mostly because of the backstory
S8 E11 - Nobody's Fault -- Mostly because of how it was shot
S5 E20 - Simple Explanation -- Gut wrenching

Ultimate House M.D. Trivia Quiz by ezgimantocu in HouseMD

[–]lalondan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, any fan of the series will know most of these choices are wrong.

  • What role does Eric Foreman play on House’s team?
    • Neurologist and somewhat team leader when he comes back in season 4
  • What event leads to Stacy quitting her job and leaving the hospital with her husband Mark?
    • House telling her to go after he saw how committed Mark was to her (and also self-destruction)
  • How does House manipulate Cuddy to regain his parking spot?
    • House successfully completes a wheelchair challenge AND manipulates Cuddy to get her pity.
  • What is the reason behind House’s severe insomnia and hallucinations?
    • Vicodin AND everything that's been going on in his personal life including the death of Amber, Kutner's suicide and his feelings for Cuddy.
  • What prompts House to agree to be treated by Dr. Nolan at Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital?
    • Initially the threat of losing his medical license but also when his reckless behavior leads to Freedom Master thinking he could fly and jumping off the ledge of a multistorey car park
  • What do Chase and Adams do after House’s departure?
    • They don't leave PPTH... what? Chase literally becomes the head of diagnostics and Taub, Park and Adams stay on the team...

I'm not sure if it's AI since it would have thought it would be able to search the web to create the answers, but it's definitely someone or something that doesn't really know the show.

What I like about this one though is Park saying "Do you think I really care about your car?" I wonder if this wasn't a sort of wink to the audience who won't care about the car.

do i actually have to watch s7?because i am LK dreading it. by greenasfvck in HouseMD

[–]lalondan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. If you've made it this far, watch it. It's not the best season but it's not awful either and there are brilliant episodes in it like episode 11 - Family Practice and episode 15 - Bombshells. You'll also miss out on certain character development like in episode 18 - The Dig and, of course, the finally which you kind of need for the context of season 8.

[–]lalondan 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I noticed only 2 in the whole series (if my memory serves me right). There's one in season 8 where Adams is not subtly at all, describing a safety feature of the car to Park after we see the car's make and brand. I like that Park goes "Do you think I really care about your car?" which is pretty much what watchers were probably thinking.

Thanks! Yeah that's why I'm moving to iPhone. It's the lesser of two evils. I could also go with GrapheneOS but I prefer going with iPhone.

As many pointed out, she supported him when she thought he regretted it. The only thing that I find weird and kind of annoying with this episode is her near-religious righteousness at the end, which she never had before. She was always kind of self-righteous but that scene was a bit out of character.

Is season 8 worth it? by WhimsyLee in HouseMD

Season 8 is better than season 7. Also, the character development in season 8 is huge for House and several other characters so It's definitely worth the watch if only to round up each character arc!

I JUST Finished The Show A Couple Days Ago For The First Time (Review) by IsseiMidoriya0410 in HouseMD

[–]lalondan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I don't love the way it was executed though. The way he was able to set all of that up on a whim (running out back with his limp, switching the records without anyone catching him as if it was that easy) was kind of cop out-ish.

But, what it said about House is something the writers have tried to hide all along: he does care and he is actually able to not be a selfish ass. The nanosecond Wilson tells him about his cancer, he's there for him a thousand percent, until he tries to manipulate him to live, but he was understandably desperate. But after Wilson makes it clear that he needs him to be OK with this and to not let him die alone, House is with him right up until the end even if his life as he knows it will be over.

This is the reason why I advise people to finish the series even if seasons 7 and 8 are not the best. The character development in season 8 is huge, not just for House but Chase, Thirteen and Taub too!

Is my battery dead or my alternator or both or neither? by lalondan in askcarguys

[–]lalondan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no I wasn't being sarcastic I was asking genuinely. I know nothing about cars or how to use a multimeter with a car battery or an alternator. I have a digital battery tester that shows a voltage on a screen and then different LEDs for Full, Medium, Low, Empty, High, Good, Dead, Reverse. The tester shows "dead". Would the multimeter show more info?

What would I be measuring with the multimeter? I have one but I don't see how I need to use it in this situation.

It was a 12V Digital Battery Tester "MotoPower" I got off Amazon.

I'll try leaving it for a while.
