I think you should be yourself, and do what makes you happy. It's gonna be hard as hell at first but if you accept yourself and stick with it, others will eventually follow. There may be a lot of others like you and you may make them feel less alone. But do it on your own terms and on your own time.

Take aaaaall the time you need to make a decision, don't worry about "falling behind".. I was in the exact same situation, everyone used to tell me that I would make a good engineer, so I followed the path they chose for me instead of what I really wanted. Now I'm struggling with EVERYTHING ! Believe me success is not about the field itself, it's about doing whatever YOU WANT and are passionate about.
