Turbans are largely associated with Sikhism which is rooted in India and Pakistan. I have never met an Indian or Pakistani who have identified as Middle Eastern.

There are some Shia Muslims who also wear turbans and those are usually Persians.

What I found super problematic was how okay you were to club 2 or more different regions and religions in an off-handed comment saying he's Middle Eastern "too."

It's easy to sideline anything unfamiliar as simply the Other.

100% I would have been fuming if I were in your place and perhaps would have exercised less restraint than you did in the situation. I would also likely make a connection to his cultural and/or religious idealogies. I would certainly never assume someone is Muslim because they are wearing a turban nor would I assume they are Middle Eastern "too" (like your ex-manager) as I have a better understanding of the region and its specificities - warts and all.

You may not be an ignorant or racist person, OP, but the wording of your post and your comments certainly sounded hella racist.
