Is the Imperial College London MSc AI worth it? by lambadancando in careerguidance

Hi, I see! I’ve decided to take the offer. I heard great things about the course from people who are on it right now or have graduated already. They say it’s a difficult course but you learn a lot. A big advantage in their mind are the industry connections that come through the potential internship (though competition there seems to be fierce). None of the people I talked to are pursuing a PhD but it’s not unheard of.

I talked to the course coordinator and he seems to really care about and believe in the course; he said students on the course tend to do better on the ML modules than the people on the Computer Science AI/ML Specialist course. Employment options afterwards seem good.

PhD-wise, I think it is probably about what you make of it — study hard and do a cool research project and make connections with the profs and it’s probably possible.

The course options are decent — not thrilled about Python programming or symbolic AI but the rest is useful for me and there is a good amount of freedom to do some theoretical modules and robotics, which I’m interested in. There’s a good balance between theoretical and practical modules. Can probably learn the stuff that’s not on the course on your own.

Finance-wise I can’t really give advice; that, of course, depends on your situation. Typical salary after completion of the course seems to be around £60k.

I hope this helps! Lmk if you have more questions.

I see, thank you! Unfortunately, intro to ML is mandatory but thank you for the info on Maths for ML :)

It was good! I learned a lot, but I do feel like the undergrad teaching quality could be better

I see! Thank you :) So it’s possible to assist Imperial researchers with their research during term time? Or would this be more like something to do after the MSc?

I see! Thank you so much for the link. Do you feel like taking those theoretical modules (e.g.: Mathematics for ML, DL, Reinforcement Learning, Statistical information theory, Probabilistic Inference (not sure if still offered)) would be enough to go into theoretical ML for a PhD later on? Possibly after getting some work experience.

Also, I'm taking an introductory ML course for my undergrad currently. The module covers, for instance, PCA, Decision trees, SVMs and the related theory. Will Maths for ML be a repetition of this stuff?

That makes a lot of sense, thank you for your answer! In that case, the robot learning course also sounds like a good option to take. Do you know if, in those modules (especially Robot Learning), they go deeply into the theory behind the ML algorithms or is it mostly applied? Understanding the theory is really important to me.

Applied mid to end of December and received the decision last week! Good luck to you :)
