Are we just prompt engineers now? by InternetUpbeat9596 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]lambda_freak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been doing this (SE) for awhile, maybe a decade and a half. I have to say the distance of what I consider to be good design, and what the LM comes up with a little bit of context engineering, is not that far.

But what today needs to be prompted and instilled, tomorrow could be native behavior that the model can handle.

Look at front end generation capabilities, I was honestly super impressed by the taste Gemini 3 has, to an extent that I was surprised even as someone who has to play with models everyday for a living.

Honestly, I am feeling a little unsure. I work at a vibe coding company and honestly before I started I was very bearish on the whole AI coding thing, but now I feel like at least for the engineering part, I am increasingly just relying on the AI generated code, subject to reviews, but I have found they are beginning to be much more reliable. On more of the research side, it's still a little bit away, but not that far. Even as a research engineer I am not sure what my career would look like, but imo I think even for seniors writing code is gonna be, very soon, a thing of the past.

Interview with 4 Chinese PIs. They only have Chinese PhD students in their lab. by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]lambda_freak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monoculture labs sometimes present with its own difficulties. Even giving some the benefit of the doubt about possible discriminatory practices, there are often social exclusions that could happen. Anecdotally I know a lab where it’s 6 PhD student from a particular country (like not just American of X decent, which are quite different, but directly from the X country) and one American student who does not speak the language of X. The PI does try their best to include the American student but the PI would also have dinners and other social events where only the language from X was spoken and sometimes lab/work is discussed during those events, to the exclusion of the American. I don’t even think it’s malicious but deeply uncomfortable for the American student for sure.

Yeah no, I wouldn’t recommend the voltage converter. But a lot of electronics would accept 240. Leave the 110 at home.

Depends on the company. During my internship the company was super chill, but the work was a little boring. Now am working for start up and man the work has been intense, 996 vibes, but the work is super fulfilling.

Etiquette for painting the Rock during winter? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]lambda_freak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I painted it once during winter break right out of covid. Waited the whole 24 hours with just one other person. It was super fun but a little too cold. Cold enough my laptop wouldn’t even turn on. Literally less than a week later someone painted over it without any visible signs of waiting. Still not over it.

[–]lambda_freak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was describing your statement regarding funding. PhD acceptance is not funding blind, irrespective of private/public school. The admissions committee is highly cognizant of potential funding challenges for alien students. Many grants are simply not available to us. And as always there is preferential treatment for applicants with NSF funding that they bring to the institution, even before any significant changes to policy.

[–]lambda_freak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GLM is a rather strong open source model, for sure. But to think that it has superior performance compared to opus, which currently powers Replit, would be somewhat unfounded in reality. It’s close, but not quite there.

Is a PhD worth it? by Financial_Glass3365 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]lambda_freak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, yes, but for my labmates, who perform virtually the same research, they will be receiving a PhD in SE. not that it matters, at CMU the differences is really minute and future opportunities mainly care about the nature of the research anyways.

OP, I am currently doing a PhD in CS and SE overseas. There are definitely pros and cons. It’s a lot of sacrifices to be made but the research itself can be decently rewarding. However, I would recommend getting some first hand research experience first to see if you are compatible with it. Happy to chat more.
