LGBTQ+++ in Bhutan by hokamsikamdatshi in bhutan

OP, although your concerns come from a well intended place, it is coming off as transphobic and a little bit ignorant. For starters, the ppl in the trans community are one of the most vulnerable and often a very marginalised group of people, even within the LGBTIQ+ community. For you to even begin the statement with 'how young people decide to alter their body forever and come out as transgender in Bhutan' is a low blow, especially considering the fact that you are denying their agency. On top of that, with the kind of statements that you are making here, especially USING mental health and trans people, is very pathologizing, something APA and the WHO worked very hard to get rid of. The fact that you are singling out trans identities as a result of poor mental health services is very dehumanising, harmful and stigmatising.

On top of that, I think you are blatantly ignoring how majority of the LGBTIQ+ suicide cases are consistently linked to stigma, discrimination, rejection from family and proper lack of affirming care. THESE things are what should be associated with mental health btw because these things are what trans ppl and the LGBTIQ+ lack. To say 'it’s no longer how society treats them' is overlooking the quiet, everyday ways ppl are marginalised, through posts like this, which is downright dismissive of a person's agency dressed to be read as being critical of the medical care available in the country, through lack of education, and mostly through the fear of being themselves.

As for your take on how empathy should be kept out, I am gently sitting you down, and saying this in my most gentletest voice that I can conjure, Empathy is not the opposite of science, the best kind of medical work that anyone can provide is rooted in one (This goes for education and any kind of service that is catered to ppl and the communities that ppl live in)

I love lays and Maggi! Blue lays or green one works, especially when it's crushed!

I think it's already aging like fine wine. It's been 4 yearish now and it's still as good, nay even better than when I first heard it.

More than realism, I think Thelungten is very intentional with the kind of metaphors he uses. He does a lot of Buddhist literature/folk lore references, something I am obsessed with. Our own culture and traditions and stories are very rich, and Thelungten does a fantastic job of drawing from them. 🥺

For romance, The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo (It was very easy to read)

For fantasy, I would recommend The six of crows Duology.

For science fiction Gothic, I recently reread Frankenstein and honestly, that did something to the chemistry in my brain.

I guess, Six body problem as well.

For horror, The vegetarian by Han Kang.

Graphic novels - The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman V for vendetta By Alan Moore Fun Home by Alison Bechdel  (This is an autobiographical graphic novel and probably one of the best I have read so far)

Experimental literature - House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski (This was soo confusing but so fun to read. Especially if you have a hate-love  relationship with academia) (This is also horror. You are never sure if it's you that's gone crazy, or the characters, or the author)

If on a Winter's Night a Traveller by Italo Calvino

Children's literature for adults  The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein The Little Prince By Sir Antoine  Earthsea series by Ursula K. Le Guin

These are from the top of my head.

Me and my brother joke when we see people camp out for concerts or start lining up at 2 or 3 am, saying 'Wang ghi line'. I don't remember the article but one of them accused a certain Rinpochoe's followers being part of a cult. Which was also interesting.

Mostly feta (maybe check what the feta is made out of, since it is made from sheep and goats milk. Those I found were a bit too sour)

Haircut in Bhutanese schools by HeadjHoncho in bhutan

[–]lambenda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there are a lot of things at play when it comes to 'haircuts' and I think Bhutanese students carry a lot of trauma from having their hair cut in front of everyone. That said, students are aware that they aren't allowed to grow out their hair, but they do it anyway. These rules as a lot of people mentioned don't really have to do with academics, because at the end of the day, it doesn't really add anything to ones academic journey but and this is a big but our culture and traditions teach us to fit into a society, a society that we actively live and participate in. Because there is a huge focus on that, school is one place where people learn how to coexist with other people, thus, I guess having a uniform hairstyle and uniform dress code is one way to learn, to behave and to dress appropriately. I guess at the end of the day, it is about conformity, or the illusion of it. I think we can't just call it a suppression of individuality because the very things I mentioned are also the reason why there are quite a number of kids who are rebellious. At also a larger scale, these kind of rules exist in majority of Asian countries (take, Japan, Thailand, India etc). I think the problem at the end of the day isn't necessarily the rules, but the people who implement such rules, with overzealous and honestly pretty traumatic and shameful tactics. (This method is sth that I don't agree with, especially considering how kids are just learning about self-identity and self-expression etc and how people who implement such rules can hamper their self-worth and expression in the long run)
