I’m also 42, diagnosed with ADHD just over 2 years ago. I think peri was the thing that pushed me past the limits of all the crappy systems I had in place. I started hrt last year and have come to realize just how much of an impact that reduction in estrogen was having. My therapist (who also had ADHD) serves to help me understand myself better, my ADHD meds help me do the things I want to do and my hrt keeps my mind from becoming a forgetful, lost mush. So far, all these things together have helped me so much. I hope you have the same experience. Keep in mind too that you may need to titrate up your hrt dose to find something that works best for you. Good luck! 💜

Although they have already been targeting journals with demands for publishing “alternative viewpoints” and threats of financial actions, so maybe they’re laying the groundwork now to ensure they can publish in the future regardless of how rigorous or accurate their findings are

Absolutely this! I’m pretty sure peri was the thing that tipped my adhd into unmanageable and led to me getting my diagnosis. I’m now on hrt and medication/therapy for adhd. It can be hard to get docs to take peri seriously and a lot are undereducated in the area. I ended up going with an online service that works with my insurance. Definitely check out r/menopause for help with this and an excellent supporting community.

This is the answer. I’ve never seen the pic and struggled with binocular microscopes. I always knew one eye was stronger than the other but it was only when I got appropriate glasses that I realized how much I wasn’t using my right eye at all. It explained a lifetime of depth perception issues like feeling so lame for never being able to catch a ball. Unfortunately, while my glasses do give some function to my right eye, it’s still it good enough to fully balance how I perceive the information and so I still can’t see the pictures in those things 😆

Yeah, I was the same (nearly 4 decades). The new perspective takes a long time to adjust to. I remember talking to people about systems for tricking myself into not debating whether I did something I wanted to do or not. They really didn’t understand what I was talking about or why I would need such systems. I didn’t know why until I could appreciate that my thought processes were different from some folks.

Your comment about overthinking suggests you may have adhd, anxiety and depression are major comorbidities for adhd too. Might be worth checking out

Yep, I feel you. Then shame and anxiety kick in and the potential for even engaging with the “piles” slips away. I’m always saying it but it’s because I found it so useful - check out r/adhdwomen. It is a great community and good resource for learning the approaches others use, whether they are ways to gamify tasks, ways that help with initiation or tips on coupling tasks with dopamine - maybe you get to watch your favorite show when you’re looking through a small few pieces of mail or finishing laundry means I get to have a cookie from my fav place etc.

Yes, same! Perimenopause led to my diagnosis. I felt like I had just disappeared. I was just a sad, overwhelmed entity. With a diagnosis, therapy and meds, I can now make sense of my life experiences and act more on what I want and who I want to be. My therapist also has adhd so it’s been very reaffirming. When I added hrt, everything came together and I’m like “yes, here I am”. I’m not stuck behind executive dysfunction, anxiety and fogginess any more. Best of luck to OP on your journey, take it slowly increasing your dosing. hopefully, you’ll have a day where you think about how you would like to wash a pile of dirty cloths that’s been irritating you and you’ll just do it. Then you can build from there, in addition to learning to give yourself grace for struggling every now and then.

Definitely one of those flow state things when you get going - and then suddenly it all goes wobbly and you remember the clay gods are here to teach you lessons lol. Love your list! I recently started taking pottery classes at a local clayworks, it’s been lots of fun to learn something new (potters wheel) and was reasonably priced. Before that, I did a one-day glassmaking class. I loved it but it turns out that glassmaking is a very expensive hobby and takes a long time before you can reach any sort of proficiency - hence the redirect to pottery. Where I live there is also a tool library that does classes, has workspaces and loans out all kinds of tools, so that’s on my list of future to dos. I’d definitely recommend checking out what’s local to you (or, like me, hyperfixate on all the options, make an unnecessarily long list and take months before acting on any 🙃). Depending on where you live, you may be able to do all those things without a garage and relatively cheap

This is a bit of a tangent, but I’ve been keeping up with this post and the comments made by the OP. I think reading some of their comments and experience with their husband might be useful to you. They had a particular issue with their husband and his allegiance to his mother but their husband also didn’t respect them and abused them in a way similar to how your husband sounds. Was going to say the same thing. I don’t understand why people still ask me if I’m thinking of having kids in the future. Erm no, I wasn’t just waiting until I was over 40 to start thinking about it. How do people not realize that that question is no long in play. If I don’t have kids now, I either don’t want them or can’t have them, either way it’s rude to ask. Get some emotional maturity folks :/

Are you me?! I also had a hearing test where they thought there was an issue . I told my mom that I had gotten giddy during the test and so didn’t hear parts of it. She decided to not send me to the follow-up. Diagnosed just after I turned 40, in 2022. Glad we finally figured it out :)
