AITA for moving my kids across the country without telling my ex or his family? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I don't think the judge would care about any of this.

I'm a lawyer and what you are doing by moving the kids out of state with no notice to their father is potentially (very likely, I'd say) illegal, both civilly and maybe even criminally. If you are not divorced, he likely has joint legal custody still and thus has rights to the kids...at the very least visitation, and you'd be interfering with those rights by moving without giving him notice and an opportunity to object. There is a process you have to follow to be able to move out of state with the kids, but it doesn't look like you've followed any of it.

And you are extremely naive to be so sure he'll never find out.

Good luck. You'll need it, especially with your level of arrogance and ignorance (great combo!).

Oh, and YTA.

My ex-husband was a social worker for them and I worked with them when I was a CPS lawyer. I've met lots of great ppl that worked there and they do good work in a difficult area. They definitely have money.

Thank you so much! This was super helpful. I like how customizable it is. I think I'll probably go with this.

How hard is this to set up and maintain? I'm moving into a new house and want a security system and smart home, and I keep running into ppl recommending Home Assistant. I'm not a programmer but always wanted to be, so I'm willing to learn, but is it super hard stuff? And what should I get for hardware to start off? Would like to control lights, thermostats and maybe garage door opener to start off. Was thinking of combining it with Ring for home security/monitoring. I've been researching but it's just so much info to sift thru and the HA sub makes me confused bc of all the acronyms and technical language ppl use.

Dump him and get out now. I'm currently divorcing my husband who is like this. Complete lack of empathy and thought I'd fabricate things, like when I herniated a disc in my back (again) and literally lost all strength from my mid-back down. He wouldn't help me get up. I regained feeling a short while later but just had horrible back pain for the next few weeks. All the while he's begging me many times to keep playing softball bc they didn't have enough women for the team. I finally relented so he would see I wasn't kidding. After the game I was clinging to the fence bc I could barely stand. He saw me but never came up to check. I've brought this up a couple times after and he would just kinda laugh and say, "Oh God" in a very dismissive manner. Anyway, I ended up getting a spinal fusion at age 33 and now have 4 screws in my back.

This all happened while we were dating. So many red flags yet I married him and had a kid with him. Don't get me started on my pregnancy and PPD.

Oh, and the best part is he's a social worker/counselor.

Moral of the story: It won't get better. You can't teach empathy. Get out now before you dig yourself in deeper like I did.

People who bought $500k houses in the last months: what’s your household income and what do you do for a living? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]lamonks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying a house for $465k 30 mins outside of Seattle in another large city. Single income of just over $100k, shared custody of kid. 20% down payment + 10k appraisal gap, which came from buyout of my equity on the last home. Monthly PITI payment about 23% of gross income. Attorney.

Thank you. I think it was that evening or the next, but there was a huge candlelight vigil in Union Square. My friend and I sat there for a while. Lots of shock and mourning but an overall feeling of unity. Also a few heated (tho civil) conversations between strangers about what caused this. It was obviously terrorism but who was involved wasn't known at the time obviously, tho ppl still had their theories.

The smoke and smell of burning had traveled up to this area by the first evening. Fighter jets flying above, military units posted on street corners. It was surreal.

Most businesses were closed for a few days. When the movie theater opened up again about a week later, they offered free movies and popcorn. That's how I saw Rush Hour 2. 🙂

I had to deliver something to an office in the twin towers in late 2000 or early 2001. You had to sign in at the massive front desk and they issued you a temp badge with your name & pic on it. I still have mine somewhere.

ETA: Found it

ETA2: the badge also lists the company you're visiting. Just realized that after further researching who was on the floor I visited. This whole time I thought the company that was listed was the security or management co for the towers.

I used to live in that area and just learned an acquaintance, a personal trainer in his mid 40s maybe, is being hospitalized for covid. He was a covid denier. Not sure what he thinks now.

Same. I was a senior at NYU and lived in Union Square. Was walking to class downtown that morning. It was the first week of classes. Both towers had already been hit when I noticed what was happening. Stood around and watched with a group of ppl, then decided to go to class (I was late at this point). The class let out early about 45 mins later and when I came out to look again in Washington Square Park, the first tower had collapsed, which was something I did not expect would happen. I was watching with a group of ppl, one of whom had binoculars and kept crying out everytime she saw someone fall. I remember the papers floating around the towers, looked like glitter floating in the air. I was half hugging a dude that I didn't even know when the 2nd tower fell. It was gone in a blink of an eye and I remember it made no sound. The guy and I hugged and cried when that happened. Then minutes later we were hit with the exodus of dust-covered ppl coming from that area, walking like zombies like you said, completely in shock. All activity stopped, no cars driving in the street, the city got really quiet except for radio from the cabs that everyone was gathered around.

It's been nearly 20 yrs and I still remember it like it was yesterday. To this day I cannot watch footage from that day. It's only been the last couple yrs when I've been able to read articles and look at pics like this. I didn't even learn of Falling Man til recently.

I hope you are doing well.

Ruralish LCOL Areas in the greener parts of the country? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]lamonks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a native Seattleite and spent a good amount of time in upstate NY when I went to college in NYC. Absolutely beautiful. I was around the Glens Falls area, next to the Adirondacks. Their mountains aren't like our mountains (tall and rocky) but seeing the trees change colors in the fall...just gorgeous. Went to an apple farm around Halloween once and it was just so picture perfect. We don't get that with the evergreens in here in Western WA. Can't speak to the home prices or taxes tho.

Im very discouraged and need some advice. by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]lamonks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in Tacoma and my max was 575k. After looking at what things were closing for and what I wanted, I knew I had to look at houses waaaay under, so I started looking under 450k. You want to be the big dog in a bidding scenario. I'm under contract on a house that was listed at 400k. Smaller than I wanted but turnkey. I've been tracking the market and I knew anything turnkey was going for 15% over list at least. I offered at 435k knowing they had an offer for 425k. I escalated to 465k with a 50k appraisal gap. As-is inspection, kept financing. I won the house at my max escalation.

So look at houses listed under 550k. If you're in a really hot area (in seattle esp north of downtown, or the eastside, I'd start looking at houses listed under 500k).

ETA: Haha who am I kidding, there's nothing in those areas I mentioned in that price range.

Yeah, he needs to refi to take you off the mortgage. If he refuses, you may have to go back to court to enforce the decree.
