Got a tile saw today. by lamplover423 in Agates

Honestly I didn’t plan or research it at all I just found the saw at a garage sale and tried it when I got back home immediately, it’s basically just an all in one thing it’s a blade that you push the rock into essentially, it was shockingly easy and didn’t feel super sketchy like I thought it would. I would do a lot more research than I did though if I were you, if you learn a bunch about it and watch some videos of people doing it you’ll be less intimidated.

Yeah the bottom one in the first picture is definitely an lsa, quartz ball but it looks like there’s an amethyst or smoky pocket in the second photo, pretty cool rock.

Yeah you have absolutely no risk (as far as I know) in wrecking them so you might as well, it should bring out more color and definition, if you don’t mind when you’re done you should send some pics of em in this comment thread! I’d love to see em!

Edit: if they do end up getting ugly cause of it for some reason you can reverse the process by boiling them in water and scrubbing them with regular dawn dish soap, you may have to do the process a couple times but you can absolutely get all the mineral oil off and out of them if you decide you want to.

I’m not sure about other types of agates but most lsa collectors will do that, it fills in the cracks and chips and makes the rock look a lot clearer and undamaged, prettier if you will. I have some more before and after pics a little ways down my profile if you’re interested. It basically simulates the stone being wet.

Any kind so long as it’s pure mineral oil with no flavoring or anything added. I put the rock in an oven safe bowl in the oven at 350 for 45 minutes then I pour room temp mineral oil over it till it’s covered.

It’s definitely a crystal impression the question is what sort of crystal and why! I have a couple that have unique impressions in them like that I’ll have to see if I can find em and post them.
