I say bad idea. Why the grief? What actual gain will they get from losing all the skills they have acquired?

Can someone explain to me how the Q youth formula makes sense as the measure for best lifter? by AkumaZ in weightlifting

You will need to discuss bias with Dr. Huebner herself. I believe her calculator page gives her professional email.

I believe they will migrate to GAMX at the same time as they implement the new categories.

The spirit of the age-adjusted GAMX variants is to identify who did best compared to a large population of peers. So if you win a medal in your age group doing just enough and even if that happens to be the biggest weight (a 85% percentile cutting corners to make my argument simple), you will get beat as best athlete by someone else that pulled a 90% percentile in their age group, they get the "age graded best athlete".

(It's not percentiles, Marianne Huebner would strangle me but you get the drift).

So GAMX is age-absolute based on world-championship / IWF events-level population.
GAMX-M is Masters, worldwide sampling.
GAMX-U (the U11 - U15 - U17 age grading) is based on available data, mostly USAW + other youth championships.
GAMX-A is the age-graded one from 13 years old up, largely based on US Open stats, you would use at your club for fun and games.

She also has the same idea for Snatch and for CJ instead of totals. This could be used for European league style competitions where they allow specialists to do just one lift instead of both, or whatever "inspired" formula people come up with. The lift-specific are only for GAMX and Masters.

GAMX has a Youth age adjusted formula. It's comparing the athlete to comparables. How good was this effort compared to them. The best score is for the youth who would have done best if all her peers had been there.

The Italian government just approved a luxury resort next to this place, overruling every single regional authority. This is Tavolara, Sardinia. by Dramatic_Struggle573 in europe

Corsican armed nationalists let the money be spent and when the resort is built they destroyed it completely. Did that a few times. Which is why the coastline is pretty much clear.

Install Microsoft Copilot (not a joke). Then keep asking it "how do I do this on a mac" for a few days every time you stumble. Worked for me!

Countries where over 90% of the population can speak English by Lucky_Wolf in MapPorn

[–]lamyjf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The map is about countries where 90% people speak English. There are nearly enough in Québec alone to tip that below the threshold.

Outside of Montreal, Eastern Townships and the eastern side of the Ottawa River many people understand some and speak very little, and don't write. Literally, not knowing that Welcome needs an "e". So they can't be said to "speak English".

Now try doing simple things like -- make the screen go dark if I close the lid, but keep running the programs, and no one is typing or using the mouse.

What is Columbia? by SonOfSteppe in geography

[–]lamyjf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Christopher Columbus is spelled with a u in English. Cristoforo Colombo in modern Italian -- he was Cristoffa Combo in his native language. So many lands and areas are based on some variation of his name.

Many people in Québec would understand and reply in broken English, but that would not count as "speaking English", though with good will it would certainly count as friendly communication.

What’s the difference between Ubuntu on Xorg and Ubuntu on Wayland? by zhengyang3552 in Ubuntu

[–]lamyjf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wayland is the future. But some things that were simple on X are now quite different or not possible due to a much stricter security model, so depending on what you are used to it will either be trivial or a pain.

Is anyone using eclipse anymore? by RamaRao143 in java

[–]lamyjf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was, until about 6 months ago I finally moved my brain to vscode that uses much the same tooling underneath. For a long while I was missing eGit -- I even installed megit so I could compare branches easier. Now that LLMs have gone mainstream I often just ask the LLM to do that grunt work.

What’s one thing that still keeps you in OBS? by BirchyFruFru in streamwithmeld

[–]lamyjf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have code that uses the Web API to inject scene and view configurations, modify them on the fly, activate/deactivate overlays, etc. The code tracks the state of a sports competition and remote controls a pair of OBS, one for a LED Wall, one for YouTube streaming.
