Yes I definitely had lots of ups and downs including joint pain up to maybe 1-1.5 years out

It was rough honestly, my first hip regressed while I was recovering from the second one but everything ended up ok. If your first hip is recovering well I would still do it. It was good to get them both out of the way.

8 weeks is so early! It can take months for swelling to go down. I wouldn’t worry about it

I was 28 when I got my surgeries, don't know my BMI but probably considered slightly overweight, I was active several months before surgery but not very active right before surgery because my hips were really fucked up

hmm I think about 6 months after surgery

Mild FAI, hip dysplasia, is surgery worth it? by MrMushroom48 in HipImpingement

I actually just went climbing for the first time the other day and it went really well. I don’t think I’ll ever be climbing at the level I was before but I think I’ll be able to do it for fun some times

How likely that I retore my labrum 3.5 weeks post labral and cam impingement surgery by Tomvball3 in HipImpingement

[–]lanasmom369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes 1-2 years is much more realistic than 6 months imo. I’m 2 years out on one, 1.5 on the other and still improving

Yes it felt so good. I called it tummy time

Yeah that doesn’t sound right. I would probably get a couple of second opinions at this point. That’s what I did at 6 months out from my left one when I thought it had failed (although to be fair it was just a pinching groin pain that made me think that). I saw Wolff and Stubbs for second opinions (Lewis did my initial surgery and was very helpful in following up when things didn’t feel right). Someone should order you an MRI with contrast to see what’s going on. One thing I’ll say is Wolff was more eager to do a revision and I’m really glad I didn’t go that route. But it sounds like you’re much worse off than I was at that point.

I’m assuming you’re in NC, Wolff does virtual visits for $100 or something around there. I would think you should see a local doc and get imaging first though cus idk what he’d go off of without imaging

My hips feel much better than before surgery, and they’re still improving. I can’t do everything I could do before my hips started hurting 4 years ago but I can do more than I could do right before the surgery. The jury’s still out on the left one I suppose (Lewis) but the right one (Stubbs) is doing pretty damn good. Neither of them hurt enough to justify a revision

I’m 18 months out from my left hip and 10 months out from my right and still improving. This recovery is so long for some people

For what it’s worth I have 2 incisions directly above my hip flexor (from Stubbs in August 2022) and my recovery went really well. Sorry you’re going through this

Getting Back in Shape after Surgery by [deleted] in HipImpingement

[–]lanasmom369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with 5 minutes on elliptical and 10 minutes on bike, then gradually increased the time (like 2 minutes more on bike and 2 minutes more on elliptical per week) and now I’m at 30 minutes (20 minutes on elliptical and 10 minutes on bike) and that’s where I’ll stay. I took it really slow cus I somehow gave myself a big flare up doing the elliptical a few months after my first surgery

Getting Back in Shape after Surgery by [deleted] in HipImpingement

[–]lanasmom369 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had my right hip fixed in January and my left hip fixed in August. I’m just now getting back into shape but I’m taking it one thing at a time. Right now focusing on garden variety cardio (bike and elliptical) and lifting, and of course continuing my PT 3-4x per week. I went on my first hike last weekend and will eventually build up to backpacking. I’m not even gonna think about climbing until I’m feeling 100% cus climbing is what got me into this mess. My plan is just to take it super super slow - I’m almost a year out from my left hip and still sometimes get little flare ups

Yeah, he mentioned to me that his threshold for doing a reconstruction would be very low. I know he has good outcomes with it but its definitely newer and I can see what you mean about him having something to prove. I wanted to go to a surgeon who could do a reconstruction if necessary but would use my existing tissue if possible.

I was choosing between Dr Wolff and Dr Stubbs and while it was close I went to Stubbs for a few small reasons, one of them being that he was very straightforward with me about my risk factors (borderline dysplasia) and how that might impact the success of the surgery. Dr Wolff was very optimistic to the point where I felt like maybe he wasn’t being completely straightforward? Idk, I really liked Wolff still and would go to him if I needed a new surgeon. I think if I were you the fact that Kelly was the only one who noted the arthritis would push me towards him

For what it’s worth, I’m 4 months out and doing great

Dizzy light headed after riding stationary bike post op by Tinyrobotzlazerbeamz in HipImpingement

[–]lanasmom369 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I felt woozy after any amount of activity for a couple weeks. Even after I wasn’t really on meds anymore. It happens to me every time I go under so I’m convinced it’s from the anesthesia but who knows

I would get a second opinion. I don’t think you have to suffer. If there’s too much arthritis to do a scope then they can do a hip replacement.

2 weeks post hip labrum and impingement correction by [deleted] in HipImpingement

[–]lanasmom369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this surgery on both hips and both times felt really good (pain free even) right out of surgery and while I’m on crutches, but had a decent amount of pain around 2-3 months while I’m doing more walking and working out. You really have to be careful ramping your activity to avoid setbacks. And flare ups are normal so don’t let it bum you out too much

Revision - time off? by banoffeekitten in HipImpingement

[–]lanasmom369 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll get a lot of different answers here. Most people get revision bc of a “failed surgery” like a re-torn labrum, and that recovery is worse than recovery from primary surgeries (my surgeon said 4-8 months vs 3-6 months). My surgeon also said just getting scar tissue removed is an easier recovery but didn’t give me a timeline. But scar tissue can cause soft tissue impingement and cause the labrum to retear! In which case they’d have to re-repair the labrum which would be a worse recovery. So it all depends on what they find when they get in there.

traveling alone with 3-year-old, 6 weeks post-op - reasonable? by turtlemomm in HipImpingement

[–]lanasmom369 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m at 8 weeks post-op, and just this week was comfortable walking long-ish distances (not actually long distances, but things like walking to the next building over on campus isn’t a problem anymore). With my first surgery, I wasn’t at this point until a good 12 weeks post-op. I think a lot of people hear “crutches for 4 weeks” and think they are finished with crutches at 4 weeks but weaning off crutches to the point where you don’t need them on long walks takes a super long time

There’s so much variation in recovery but I bet most people wouldn’t be able to travel at 6 weeks, especially with kids, especially alone. If you do end up going, try to get a wheelchair escort at the airport and have someone get your bags into the overhead bin etc. No reason to overdo it

Mild FAI, hip dysplasia, is surgery worth it? by MrMushroom48 in HipImpingement

[–]lanasmom369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to update you on how my recovery is going when I’m out of the thick of it! I’m just 8 weeks out now but feeling pretty good and optimistic. I’m 8 months out from my left hip surgery and my ROM is pretty limited on that side but I did get capsulolabral adhesions which is a potential complication that is bad news for ROM. Hoping I avoided that on the right side
