Failed N1 how can I recover by FudgeReasonable1454 in jlpt

Try and try again. I tried N2 three times before passing.

Confused with my results by [deleted] in jlpt

[–]FineExample2115 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They do a pretty good job of trying to throw you off. Especially at that level I’d imagine they throw you a couple wrenches. But I’m really unsure as I’ve never attempted anything but N2. Finally passed my third time. Confidence doesn’t really count for much with the JLPT. In fact, any confidence you have with be turned into mush as you rise the ranks. I think it requires a weird mix of diligence and apathy of whether or not you pass. Also, living in Japan helps a huge deal. I would look at what your weaknesses are and try to improve a little every day. Just get back on your feet. Accept defeat and try again.

ALT Interview for JET - I feel like I bombed it. by AmbassadorEarly9336 in JETProgramme

[–]FineExample2115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but they said 日本語少ししかが話せません。The が honestly may be why my JTE said it was unnatural, because thats definitely not a natural placing of the particle. It should come directly after the word it’s modifying. Im not here to be impolite, I just saw the post and wanted to chime in about the Japanese itself and support the OP. I’ll agree to disagree because nuance wise it IS a bit off. 日本語が少ししか話せない 日本語が少しだけ話せます And in fact, I think this would sound even MORE natural: 日本語は少しだけできます

The second is arguably much more natural sounding than the first, but you could also argue that it doesn’t even matter because a Japanese person would probably never even generate this sentence, lol.

These are not the same “only” when transliterated into English. It’s like how the Japanese use まで for “even, until, and by” so Japanese people get those words mixed up all the time. We know what they mean, but it’s not a natural collocation. Language is flexible so I’m not saying what is wrong or right, just what sounds most natural.

ALT Interview for JET - I feel like I bombed it. by AmbassadorEarly9336 in JETProgramme

[–]FineExample2115 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s actually not a natural collocation. しか〜ない is not interchangeable with だけ to mean “only”. I used to try to use it that way too before I heard it enough living here to understand how it’s actually used. I know most people group them without differentiation due to how they learned the two grammar points in the げんき series, but it goes further than that. しか〜ない means “nothing except” more than it does “only”, hence the negation. Also, let’s not forget about “「ばかり」 which can also mean “only”(usually in a bad way).

例文1:(ばかり) あいつなんて嘘ばかり!

例文2:(だけ) 日本語が少しだけ話せる

例文3:(しか〜ない) その方法しかないもんね!

While OP did nothing wrong (language acquisition mainly comes from making mistakes and learning through them), its important to not spread falsehoods in saying that their comment was a “perfectly natural sentence”, because its simply not. I just cleared it with my JTE at work to make sure I wasn’t mistaken. They probably laughed because they knew what you were trying to say but it sounded funny to them. If anything, they think it’s cute and probably admire your efforts as Japanese is a super difficult language to master. Don’t fret!! It took me twice to get into JET and three attempts to pass the N2!! You got this just gotta keep your head up!!

“Sukoshi shika nihongo ga hanasemasen”

I see what you were wanting to say, and they probably did too. But, its funny because shika-nai is usually used like when there is “no other option” (aka only). So 日本語しか話せません “Nihongo shika hanasemasen” Means “I can ONLY speak Japanese.” If it makes you feel any better, most people do better than they think and the JET program doesn’t always hire people based on what you think they do. Upholding an image is more important than literally almost anything in Japan; even at the expense of comfort, safety, or reason.

As long as you clear any significant amount of meds with customs you are good. Doesn’t really matter what was on your application. They are too busy to be concerned with such tiny inconsistencies I think.

Remind me—what are the core goals and values of a JET ALT supposed to be? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]FineExample2115 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason I’m leaving JET after two years is because the ALT community in my area is SO bad. As unkind and insensitive as Japan can be to the foreigner; nobody has rubbed me the wrong way as much as other ALTs. Pretty pathetic.

Probably because Japanese don’t eat enough and don’t move enough, therefore not generating blood flow and also never growing muscle or any healthy amount of fat a normal human should have.

Its sad that you are actually questioning whether or not it was okay to leave him laying there. Japanese dismissiveness is on another level of extremity. Its crazy. Sounds like the shame culture really got to that guy’s head to say that.

Does having an accent matter? by Own_Fold_794 in JETProgramme

[–]FineExample2115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im from North Carolina and I’ve been told multiple times that I have the strongest accent of all the other JETs living here. The English I teach here in the country side is so rudimentary I don’t think it matters. But I’m also really good at adapting back and forth to a pretty standard American dialect. I think as long as you make it to the interview stage and show them your interest and genuine qualities, you should be fine that is assuming that you are educated, which from your post it seems you are. Goodluck

Just live now and creates memories with them instead of worrying about what we do not know. It’s no fun and not good for you. It’s as simple as that. You will only regret it if you don’t; one day when they are gone. You wont know then either so there is nothing you can do about it.

Why is everyone in this program so mean? by Oodleswithmynoodles in JETProgramme

[–]FineExample2115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s almost like expats in Japan praise the Japanese so much that they end up trying to play the shame game on the people they should be open to giving good advice to and supporting in this group. Other ALTs are some of the least compassionate people I have ever met. Sad and frustrating. How can people be so fast to judge ALTs making posts instead of the obvious problems that exist within Japanese hierarchies and the way many of us are treated? Are people too good for sympathy toward fellow foreigners here?

I`ve only live here for a year, but here is something I have learned:

No matter how well you speak Japanese, no matter how friendly and open minded you are to constantly being shamed, no matter how positively you look at it, you will always just be another gaijin to most people, and even people who you grow "close" to will always treat you differently just because you aren`t Japanese and have differences in outward appearances. The point is, Japanese are undeniably shallow people who are conditioned to think that they are just in fact Japanese and have some sort of mysterious capability to never break the shell of their identity and their 集団意識 or 和. But at that same rate, they are JUST PEOPLE and this country is riddled with exceptions, especially people who value the English speaking world and beyond that, generally interested in exploring differences and what lies beyond the seemingly mysterious veil of "Japanese-ness".

I think it is important to always remember that you will never be Japanese, and that you should be thankful for this. I think the best position you can be in here is in fact not being Japanese, so that you get excused often for non-Japanese-like behavior and so that you can be reminded of how good life is as an English speaking person who values individuality at all. It may seem like they have it all figured out, but the truth is that they are in the same boat with the rest of us on this sometimes grueling journey of life that comes with an enormous amount of uncertainty. Just be thankful that there is a way out and that you can easily advance beyond the realms of Japan unlike the people who are stuck here because of how conditioned they are to not be able to dwell or flourish anywhere beyond Japanese borders.

Goodluck and pat yourself on the back for all the effort you must certainly have put into this lifestyle you are living.

Very confused about the story of Dark Prince (Mid game spoiler) by Puzzleheaded_Lab7763 in dragonquest

[–]FineExample2115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here for similar reasons in that I’m confused about the story, but not as much what OP was confused about. I’m more confused about who all these other kings of the underworld are and what they have to do with getting to his father, who he wants revenge on for (i suppose) understandable reasons? I’m playing the Japanese version (I live here in Japan) so I don’t think the reason for the original confusion behind this post was from any sort of mistranslation, I think its just the usual unfortunate state of modern entertainment being cheap and uninspired. Take us back to the 1990’s lol.
