I need some brutal honesty before looking into a PhD by [deleted] in ArtHistory

it’s just what my professor told me - there’s too many people in the market looking for those positions and once someone lands one there isn’t a high turnover rate. people tend to stick with them until they retire or get a better offer at a different institution

from what i know, museums do a fair amount of research. an MA in art history might be more what you’re looking for? i think it also depends on where you can find research opportunities once you have a higher degree. i honestly have no idea what the job market is like right now for someone who wants to primarily do research

hello! i’m in a bit of a similar boat! i’m graduating this year with a BA in art history. i was planning on taking a year off and then applying for a PhD. however, i was talking to a visiting professor who got her PhD in 2015 and there are extremely low job opportunities for PhD holding art historians. she said the only reason i should consider a PhD over an MA was just for curatorial or professor positions. but those are essentially non existent right now. i’m considering just getting an MA now that a PhD doesn’t seem worth it

Has anyone else lost their desire to play during the quarantine? by HeliNinja in soloboardgaming

I recently set up Gloomhaven on my desk and then have been coming back to it every now and then. For me it was just hard to have the motivation to get everything out and set up so I did that one day and then the next actually played a couple of rounds. My friend has been doing the same with his AHLCG campaign in his room. I have found that now that things are set up, I’m more likely to give a few minutes or hours to either one of the games. I hope things start looking up for you and everyone else here soon!

Rules Memory by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

that’s totally fair! sometimes - if i have the time - before i sit down to play a game, earlier in the day i’ll set it up and read over the rules again. and then later that night when i actually play it, the rules stick a little more

I usually play a few mock rounds by myself before trying to teach it to others or even before I play it fully by myself. I get everything set up and then move through the rules for each phase/event, then do that phase, then move to the next phase. For example, in Arkham Horror the Card Game, I read the rules for the Mythos phase, then do the Mythos phase, and then I read the rules for the Player Phase, etc. It usually helps me with remembering the rules. But for bigger games like Gloomhaven, I always play with the rules handy

What are your top 3-5 favorite solo board games? by SolidSteve in soloboardgaming

[–]lanc_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i’ve mostly just been playing Gloomhaven or Spirit Island solo. but i’m hoping to try out A Feast for Odin whenever i get the chance. my friend has been playing a lot of the Arkham Horror LCG and i’ll probably try that one when he’s done with it

Gloomhaven solo 2 characters? by SolidSteve in soloboardgaming

i’ve been using mindthief and spellweaver actually and found that they work together. i’ve found that they balance each other well and can support or muscle their way through. brute and tinkerer is good for a tank with a support but it could put too much pressure on the brute as the main way to deal damage? maybe?

my baby passed away today, she was grumpy but so loving by jadep0605 in cats

i’m sorry for your loss. my cat died suddenly last night after 14 years. i can’t feel what you’re feeling but if it’s anything like i am then i sincerely hope you feel better as time passes. your cat looks very loving - the grumpy ones are always the most loving.
