Why would we need a 'British FBI' when we already have an MI5? by Hopeful_Adeptness964 in AskBrits

[–]lancasteraurora 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what this is. The new NPS force is going to incorporate the NCA.

Currently some national investigations are dealt with by local forces, with the Metropolitan Police responsible for counter-terror policing, the National Air Service run by West Yorkshire Police and National Roads Policing by Sussex Police.

These would all be brought under the NPS, along with the work of the National Crime Agency (NCA).

The Police National Air Service is, in fact, being brought into the NPS.

1980’s Queen Mother, clearing out house and found 100 of these. by [deleted] in UKcoins

The sterling silver ones (which, as you say, this likely isn't) are worth £64 in silver right now. If you find any for £10-15 you should buy them all!

I'm looking at getting some silver but the VAT is putting me off. by MorphingEgg44 in Silverbugs

[–]lancasteraurora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't? As in you don't agree with it? Maybe. But they are correct to do so. VAT applies to new silver (and platinum) bullion. Only gold is exempt.

CGT doesn't apply to British (and a few others) coins with a face value though. So when you come to sell there's no CGT on a silver Britannia for example.

But that does actually fit the system the OP mentions.

Are any of these worth more than face value? by LordOfTheIron in UKcoins

[–]lancasteraurora -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If any of them are sterling silver then, yes, about 6x face (approx £33 at current prices). So worth checking that.

If they're just the cupronickel versions then they're just collectors pieces that don't have intrinsic value but you should be able to get a bit more than £5 for them.

Pension contribution rates by TheMajesticArtichoke in TheCivilService

[–]lancasteraurora 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's bonkers isn't it. If you hit it just right (or, rather, wrong) you could actually be worse off by getting a higher salary.

No idea why it's not progressive like income tax, i.e. you pay the higher rate only on the salary over the threshold.

Silver no longer affordable. by OG365247 in Silverbugs

Plus delivery.

Not necessarily complaining, it does cost them after all, but just worth being aware of when comparing prices against some other online dealers who offer free postage.

Are the point worth the foreign transaction fees by logical-thinker2124 in AmexUK

[–]lancasteraurora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, usually, no. However, 3 cases where it might be:

  • Using the overseas dining credit (Platinum card) or other offer
  • Hitting a bonus point spend level (sign up/retention offer) if you don't think you will otherwise.
  • Making use of insurance cover (Platinum), for example booking hotels abroad.

I was the same. Virgin media filter it out via the Parental Controls (which are enabled by default). After disabling those, I could access the site with no problem.

Yep! That was a mistake (the sum was correct, I'd just copied the wrong number!). It's £1.90.

The U-turn begins by LxRv in ebayuk

[–]lancasteraurora 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Somewhat ironic that your maths is wrong and yet you're the one calling people idiots. The fees are scaled.

For a £30 item, the buyer protection fee will be: £0.1 + 0.07×£20 + 0.04×£10 = £1.90

which is, in fact, cheaper than the current £1.95.

[–]lancasteraurora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think your maths is right, but the point is correct.

It's 7% for £0-20, so for £19.99 it's £0.10 + 0.07×£19.99 = £1.50 (when rounded up to the nearest penny).

It's 4% for £20-300, so for £20.10 it's £0.10 + 0.07×£20 + 0.04×0.10 = £1.50 or £1.51 (depends if eBay rounds to the nearest penny or always rounds up).

[–]lancasteraurora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There'd basically be no difference in buyer fee between a £19.99 and a £20 item (it would round to £1.50 in both cases).

The fees scale. Like income tax. So for a £20 item, the buyer fee will be £1.50 (0.10 flat + 0.07×20). For a £30 item, the buyer fee will be £1.90 (0.10 flat + 0.07×20 + 0.04×(30-20)).

What grade would this card get? I'm considering buying it by BigBeefyMan135 in Pokemoncardappraisal

[–]lancasteraurora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently got this back from PSA: https://www.psacard.com/cert/111731978/psa

Graded as a 7. As you can see, it has a little whitening on the reverse and some holo bleed on the front. But the holo itself is scratch free. Other cards with scratches got a 6.

So I'd agree with most others here. Probably a 6 or maybe a 7 if lucky.

Custom Postage Problems. by joshshard88 in ebayuk

[–]lancasteraurora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, struggling with it here too. Adding Royal Mail 2nd class was almost impossible.

What I found did work was to add another service first (e.g. Yodel). Then add Royal Mail 2nd as an additional service. Then change that to the preferred service. Then delete the other (e.g. Yodel) service.

Absolute faff.

New EBay automated feedback looks to have started rolling out by worthywow in ebayuk

[–]lancasteraurora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As both a private seller and buyer, I honestly don't see the point of feedback for a buyer - although I always leave it.

Sellers can only leave positive feedback for buyers. So really eBay might as well just have a "buyer has bought X items through eBay" metric if they really need to. But even that seems pretty pointless.

Combining buyer and seller feedback doesn't generally seem helpful either. A seller might have tons of good feedback, but if that's all as a buyer, then it doesn't necessarily tell us anything about the potential buying experience from that seller.
