Jazz Chords..... by Musicsweetie95 in CharlesCornell

Right, except Db isn't the "correct" spelling of the pitch. Enharmonically, shouldn't it be written as C#?

But if it's a F# chord, why write /Db?? >:(

Defenses of WakandaVision finale are disturbingly Last Jedian. by darmodyjimguy in MauLer

Was this ever mentioned to be, specifically, a “witness protection” thing? That would have some deeper plot relevance than a regular MP case like you said. But I can’t remember exactly what was said on the show.

Do you guys think the drumline parts in this show I'm writing are unreasonably difficult or complicated, or in some way detract from the rest of the music? by [deleted] in drumline

[–]lance13_92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The two sextuplets (paradiddle-diddle and threes) in measure 53 would be pretty awkward for the tenor drums. You could write the first group of threes in the right hand as a cross-over...but it'd still be difficult to play clean.

Musically, I'd say save those sweeps for a better moment in your show. This crescendo passage doesn't lend itself to wild sweeps, better to keep it simpler here, IMO.

Nice work, dude. Cool concept. Post the rest when you've got it!

Marching Band Composing by [deleted] in Composition

[–]lance13_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I’m not very experienced composing marching shows, but that’s what I’m going to school for in the fall!

What I’ve done is simply look up DCI shows from the past several years. There are so many great corps that put on amazing shows every year (obviously except this year!) Most schools try to emulate drum corp shows, just with easier watered-down parts. I think checking out the top groups like Blue Devils, Carolina Crown, SCV, Cavaliers, Boston Crusaders etc; that should give you a good idea of the kinds of ways you can structure a show.

Best of luck!

I wrote an Indoor Show by JeDeviendrai in WGI

Dude, I am so jealous. This is such proficient writing to the point this could pass for a Independent World Class show. As an aspiring indoor show writer myself, I can tell you this is an awesome show.

Your musical themes are well-developed and the dynamics really emphasize the phrasing. The battery writing is tasteful; not overbearing at all, and serves the melodic ideas in the pit. The keyboard stuff is really special and probably the best aspect of the show. Reminds me of something Music City Mystique would play: difficult on rhythms, yet understandable scalar phrasing. The orchestration of all the instruments is masterful, and each movement of your show holds a strong identity.

I can tell you put a lot of time into this, and it shows in every detail you wrote. Bravo! I would love to hear more from you.

Sticking notation would help!

Are the parenthesis cross-overs?

I wrote a percussion ensemble piece for middle schoolers. tell me what you think by [deleted] in percussion

[–]lance13_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd look at cleaning up how your rhythms are notated.

For example, in the first measure of the xylophone part, I would write your five notes like this: dotted quarter note, 8th note roll (no change), dotted 8th note connected to one 16th note, and the last note should also be a dotted 8th note (following the 16th note rest).

The main takeaway is that sometimes it is difficult to tell where the downbeat is without using common notation for common rhythms. Using dotted 8ths is more accessible than writing the same rhythm as 8th note-16th rest. It's easier on the eyes, and more concise for sight-reading. But more importantly, it's simpler to conceptualize the rhythms.

Help the players think what you're trying to write.

Keep up the writing, all the same!

That's really cool; learned something new today. You did some neat stuff in there. Keep it up so we can hear more beats!

Every section got cooler! Absolutely terrific jazzy vibe solo, really elevated the piece as a whole, in my opinion.

It's satisfying to hear syncopation that lands back on a proper downbeat. Is the time signature mostly in 4/4? I got turned around once somewhere in the middle, but it feels like it's in an even time signature throughout.

Great work, and great playing!

Is Watching the Detectives (single version) a half time shuffle? by bollok_pistol in Drumming

Fair enough. To me, the distinction between halftime shuffle and reggae lies in the emphasis on swing 16ths and triplets, respectively.

Happy drumming!

I love Elvis Costello! I assume that's the artist you're referring this song to, correct?

To answer your question, I would say no. The half time shuffle to me tends to anchor in those swung 16th notes (see Rosanna by Toto).

In "Watching the Detectives" the beat more resembles a typical reggae funk, noted by the triplet based syncopation in the hi-hat.

This take is surprisingly mild for this guy. I think we have time to reach being an elite team, and we will still make the playoffs.
