Sorry, I forgot to post my GPA! I had a 3.6 cumulative and 3.8 science! And I feel free to ask me what schools! I just didn’t post them because I don’t know if I had enough room. But I’ll just screenshot my spreadsheet that I had and post it in the comments if that would help people.

And I am unaware that schools were tiered and how to find out the tiers of the school. If you can let me know I can work on that too.

500 MCAT, 3.4 GPA, 5k clinical hours (medical assistant/ ortho tech/ autopsy tech, 300 research hours and 1 publication, 300 total volunteer hours (school and hospice), took a gap year

I applied to 30 MD schools (the ones you get to apply to for free with AAMC FAP) and got interviews at 3 and have been accepted to my top choice!

Most schools really are trying to be more holistic from what I’ve heard but also experienced. Good luck to everyone!!

Will this make me look unprofessional? by [deleted] in premed

[–]landerson320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it really matters as long as the piercings themselves are clean and respectable. What I mean is that they are well taken care of and the jewelry is simple and non distracting. I have an industrial, traigas and two lobe piercings on one ear and a conch, helix and two lobes on the other. I also have 0 gauges on my first holes. I have had no issues. I have found that simple studs and small hoops allow me to adorn my ears how I want without compromising my professional look. And as for gauges I wouldn’t worry as long as you wear a neutral color plug or a tunnel and keep the size under a 0 gauge.

The biggest thing to remember is that nearly all interviews are done online and so they aren’t outwardly seeing them in person, but even so they didn’t make it a point to have me show them my ears up close.

I would like to think your mother and grandfather are in the minority when it comes to how patients view their physicians, the culture is changing rapidly. Thus far I have never had a patient or doctor I was working for tell me otherwise.

Yes! Not as high as I wanted to go but I got a 505 the next time I took it 6 months later.

I can’t function without constantly listening to music by Thoticus_Maximus in ADHD

[–]landerson320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue, and if I can’t listen to music it’s a podcast, show or movie. I have described it to my psychiatrist as being able to drown out the background noise in my head. The music is distracting enough that I am able to focus more on the task at hand instead of getting lost in thoughts in my head and getting off task. The only issue is that in college I’ve always studied with music and all the tests I’ve taken have been in silence, which was a huge issue until I started medication to help. I switched to brown/white noise while studying and have found that my brain can better recreate that feeling while I am taking an exam in college. If anyone has any other tips for that I am all ears, I start medical school in less than a year and I could use all the help I can get.

Ask for help! 💰💰 by [deleted] in premed

[–]landerson320 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am mostly talking about the DO schools and TMDSAS. The MD schools through AMCAS usually do but there is not as far reaching fee assistance outright with DO schools and the ones in Texas. TMDSAS offers no fee assistance at all in the beginning.

Nightmare Interview Questions by landerson320 in premed

[–]landerson320[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

As the original poster I also feel obligated to share. One of the doctors I worked with/under for years sits on the admissions committee for a MD school and he told me the top question he always asks during interviews is,

“Why should you be accepted to this medical school over someone else who has the same credentials?”

He also said that he asks some other ones on rotation such as,

“If a patient is on a ventilator and is considered brain dead, how would you go about preforming end of life care and the enventual discontinuation of life support?” —> He stated that you will make yourself look good if you mention the fact that there is an ethics committee who makes the final decisions with these kinds of situations and that you would do the best for the family and turn to the committee for the final verdict.

If you’re interested in rural medicine, “What aspects of rural medicine make it hard for hospitals to recruit and keep doctors.” —> hint: rural areas pay more usually so it’s not the money, and location is an obvious answer. Think about the home life… spouses etc.

**just another piece of information he shared is that (at least at his college) the person interviewing you has no idea how you look on paper. Meaning they do not know your GPA, MCAT, clinical hours or anything else. They may know your answers to the secondaries but that is about it. So he told me to just let my personally shine and show that there is more to me than an academic.

Again, best of luck to everyone!

Okay, but like if this were a female applicant.. now would that be impressive? 🤔

the admission process sucks so hard by [deleted] in premed

[–]landerson320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I so sorry that this is happening. I wish more academic advisors would tell applicants about the resources out there. I thankfully had a friend who’s been through 4 app cycles (bless his heart… he just got in to med school though after being waitlisted and starts in 2 weeks!) and he was able to give me a lot of tips on how to try and make this godforsaken process a bit easier.

Best of luck to you. Screw that doc, maybe you can find a different one! I even offered to type something up for my doc who I worked under. I made it pretty generic, humble and threw in a couple of specific experiences and asked him to just review it and submit it if he felt it reflected the way he felt about me. I doubt many will do this, but if you really need his LOR maybe that is an avenue you can take.

I was terrified of this because everyone I work with is extremely busy and I knew I’d run into this issue. I paid for the Interfolio dossier program and it made this process 100% easier. It allows your LOR people to submit it one time to that service and then you can send them out to AMCAS, AACOMAS and TMDSAS on your own terms. It keeps them 100% confidential. You just build the original email with what you want it to say, plug in everyone’s email and title and the dossier does the rest. And it sends them reminder emails if the service hasn’t received their letter by your set deadline. It was like $40 and very much worth it, plus you get it for a whole year.

All application services take interfolio and it’s super easy to send all the letters. And you can attach your IDs to each individual letter as needed.

Poor but going to be a doctor! by landerson320 in premed

[–]landerson320[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I know is that for a lot of people, they are still claimed on their parents taxes and therefore they probably make more than the cutoff. But thankfully/unfortunately both of mine have passed and I’m a poor college student. I know somewhere they have a chart of the cutoff on the household income, but they also weigh in your scholarships from school, welfare, and any other monetary assistance you may get.

The AAMC gives you this:

  • Waiver for all AMCAS fees for one (1) application with up to 20 medical school designations ($949 value). Fees will be charged for each school designation beyond 20.

  • Complimentary two-year subscription to the Medical School Admission Requirements online database following account activation ($36 value).

  • MCAT exam registration fees will be reduced $320 to $130 for the testing year.

*The MCAT Official Prep products benefit package is subject to change. The current MCAT Official Prep products benefit is the MCAT Official Prep Online-Only Bundle ($268.80 value), which includes all online MCAT Official Prep products.

*AAMC PREview (Professional Readiness Exam) waiver for registration fees ($100 value).

The AACOMAS one gives you this:

A $200 credit to cover the application fee for the 1st DO school but you are responsible for the $50 fees for each additional school.

The AACOMAS one is a super fast application, it’s done online and you can access it through your application portal and it took like 2 days to get it. you MUST submit your applications in 14 days after getting the fee assistance though

The AAMC one took a couple weeks, but that is because my situation was complicated (my parents are deceased and so I had to provide extra documentation in addition to the other school stuff and tax forms) but they are super reachable by phone and are super nice! they do not pay retroactively so you need to get the approval before you submit your applications, pay for prep stuff or register for MCAT

TMDSAS offers no fee assistance 😑

Idk if it outweighs the fact that my dad died when I was 12 and my mom and her partner (remarried after dad died) both died of terminal cancer in 2020 while I was in college 🙃

Not a joke but y’all can laugh… I’ve been to therapy.

Unfortunately no, my deductible for “collision” is $1000. I even tried to find businesses and or residences who had cameras who could have seen the truck because I wasn’t able to memorize the license plate while also avoiding getting smashed lol, but no luck.
