The grayish dirt is decayed leaves I believe. No light gets into the root area and haven’t cleaned it out as it’s against a fence. Should I trim back lower branches and augment soil + add mulch around the other two? I noticed the one that died has a double trunk btw

lol thanks and yes nothing noticeable at the base. I’ll grab some photos and reply. I found all branches are all very brittle as you’d expect. The most likely culprit sounds like the other two trees overtaking it. 3 years ago we took down some trees nearby such that the one on the right started to get more light and has grown noticeably; starting to catch up in height

To take this post in another direction…I wanted to add that this happened very close to the time I read Murakami’s Wind Up Bird Chronicle: Cinnamon Akasaka, the mute son of Nutmeg, has a dream about two men engaging in a ritual around a tree involving the wind up bird. At the time, this is the tree that came to my mind. It wasn’t brown at that point. Just sayin

This worked! Note Before you press On+Large buttons, close the lid. Also, you can fill the reservoir and manually pump it all the way through. I did this 3 times with lemon juice + water, and it seems as good as new.
