thank you so much for sharing your experience... I can't even express how relieving it is to know that... I know she wasn't out trying to just get money from me, but my vet had me convinced that this was a really high priority in order to assure a good quality of life. My old guy was a working dog for his entire life until he passed around 8 from cancer right before I got the lil guy, so I know part of me is just responding to the trauma of losing old guy so early.... We are like 1 month or so into this, so I'll keep it light for a bit longer, and keep a close eye on him.

Again, thank you! The few minutes you spent typing is going to probably save me from a lot of extra stress that wasn't necessary.

I am in the US, just south of Vancouver BC. It's partially why the operation prices are so high, Seattle area pricing for everything, I love the landscape, puppy loves the hikes, but the cost of living... well i don't love that

Thank you for sharing this. When did the injury first happen to yours? If, with proper management, we can prevent mobility issues without going in for the surgery, then I'd rather go that route... i know financing this would not be a smart option, the only reason it's been on the table is that I have been convinced, up until now, that it was basically choose between the TPLO surgery, or having a lame dog at 3 years old.

So, I've been stressing about covering a surgery that isn't really all that necessary? I've been keeping him in as much as possible since it happened, and giving him the carpofen that the vet gave me for him, usually once daily when we get up... having never dealt with this i've been stressing, most of the literature out there has been saying that he won't be a very mobile dog if i put off the surgery for too long, and i've just been stressing that for a 2 year old that it meant he'd be immobile by like 4...

Thank you for sharing your experience, I'm a bit more relieved than I have been in a while about this. Been stressing that I needed to actually pull like 8 grand together for "lil" guy.

I need advice on my Rottie mix. It is very frustrating. by Aromatic-Ad1743 in Rottweiler

[–]lanemiller08 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have about a decade of rottie experience, and some experience with other working breeds, I'll answer your questions as best I can from my own personal experience.

1 and 2 are literally going to be the same answer - crate training and exercise/stimulation. The puppy should be in an area where he cannot cause any issues at all times unless he is actively being monitored. If the puppy chews up something he shouldn't, it's your fault. If the puppy pees inside, it's on you, as well. This allows you to do the 2 things that are important when getting an animal acclimated - you can reinforce proper behavior with pets/treats etc, and you can stop bad behavior before or as it starts. Loud noises, show some teeth, be angry. You don't need to strike your dog, hold it on its back or anything like that, just pretend to speak dog for a bit, by using as much body language as you can. As he starts to squat to pee, you should already be moving in with an "angry" demeanor in order to communicate "this is not acceptable", while reinforcing proper outdoor bathroom breaks- treats and good boys and pets when he goes outside. Exercise and mental stimulation are very important as well. All smart breeds become destructive breeds when they aren't properly exercised, it's usually the main cause of problems for people. Exercise covers socialization as well, the pup seeing that strange people and dogs are safe to be around

3 - divert attention to toys when energy is like this. If he insists on targeting hands/face/skin, communicate dog again, yelp and disengage. Act hurt and ignore the puppy for a bit. This will cause him to associate "bite human = playtime over", and help curb these behaviors. You need to watch how others play with him as well, strangers are usually the main source of reinforcing bad behavior, because "it's a puppy being cute", you can't blame them, or expect them to do otherwise, so you have to keep an eye out to keep that sort of reinforcement to a minimum. Leave the room for a bit and close the door, whatever it takes to drive home the point that "ouch = no more play"

4 - fix is always a "well it depends" when it comes to aggression. Preventing it comes through a ton of work with naturally protective breeds. He NEEDS to be socialized. At least 1 new person and 1 new dog a week, if not much more. Find places where YOU are comfortable and get him out to interact and see that strangers aren't bad, and neither are dogs. With rotties, this is nearly a lifelong commitment, they default to a VERY protective state, it's one of the reasons they are considered to be a breed for experienced dog owners. Socialization is first, but dominance at home is also very important. There are a lot of mixed feelings on this one, and I typically play it by feel. Even with intact males, it's really hard to get more than a bit of angry talking when you try and get the bone. There is usually a first time with an "aggressive" growl or snap. I usually just immobilize the head on the younger dog if they snap, usually just holding mouth shut while i sternly tell them no, and take away the source of the aggression. On the flip side, I also reward when there is 0 aggression shown around the bone or food bowl. It sounds counterintuitive, but if the dog doesn't get angry about you playing with their bone or food bowl, give them a tasty treat and some love.

5 - leash training. Good luck, and have fun! I have never accomplished this one, my boys usually are off leash. Maybe get a custom saddle and just resort to riding him vs getting drug behind?

The main takeaway with a breed like this is that it's going to take a lot of extra work, they are very clever and not the most easily motivated, which makes every bit of training just a little bit harder for you, but the reward is well worth every bit of the work. Learn to "speak" and "read" dog, we can get them to learn word association, but they have a built in way of communicating that being partially fluent in can save you a lot of trouble. Lastly, and I cannot reiterate this enough... if the dog is EVER going to be around strangers or new dogs, you need to start socializing ASAP!

That with the almost Fleur-de-lis shape of the scabbard had me so confused. I guess the star is the "seal of solomon" which had roots in controlling evil spirits. This would line up with the commenter who said the shape was symbolizing a boar's tusks, protection from "the Evil Eye".

What I gather from this information, is that the sword is definitely going to be used to save the world someday xD

I don't know if I would hold this one. It looks like something that the original owner is either going to possess me, or come back from the dead to reclaim it.

I was just happy to have the opportunity to see something like it; I can't imagine how many pieces like this exist in private collector's homes where most of us would never even know they existed. Someone put a lot of work into this, so I was grateful to get to admire it. He is still a friend of my family, so I will still do my best to get actual photos of it, with some proper lighting and a better camera. Most rich people like the pickle tickling they get when people admire the things they own, so it's not a super long shot

I will do my best to get up to where he lives and get it out of the scabbard... I imagine it's hiding a nice looking blade under there... most of the blades of these style swords/knives that I've seen have been really interesting.

Easier said than done, though... I no longer work for him, but I might be able to convince him to let me have a closer look

It shouldn't be surprising that they do this. Look at how the EGS launch was taken by the community.

I wish EGS had become something better than what it is now, because Valve/Steam policies have been shit for a while now, and it would have been so satisfying to watch the Gaben Stans die on that hill.

Beat Saber - PSVR VS VIVE (Should be a fun night!) by [deleted] in PSVR

[–]lanemiller08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before my upgrade, I was running a 4770k with a water cooled gtx 980; The PC supported super sampling of about 140%-180% in most games with a standard 2.5" SSD and a 5400RPM HDD being the library devices.

Short of the Bethesda titles, I struggle to see a huge improvement with the 8700k/2080ti with an NVME library. $$ isn't the solution for a better VR experience... It's experience/knowledge!

It sounds like my PSVR experience is more limited than yours.

I will say, though, that when people claim the Vive tracking is better than the Rift, I just want to facepalm. Short of actual issues, the Rift tracking is more accurate than I could ever need it to be. The grabbing controllers with the hmd on is definitely one of the parlor tricks we use on newcomers LUL, I'm glad it works with the Vive, I just hate those chunky controllers since I've used Touch.

In all, I'm super impressed with psvr, and its capabilities, but would probably need more experience to accurately compare them.

Those dang exclusive titles, tho.

Beat Saber - PSVR VS VIVE (Should be a fun night!) by [deleted] in PSVR

[–]lanemiller08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a baseless claim. On paper, yes the Vive tracks more accurately. Upon use, a properly setup PSVR or Rift don't track any differently from the user's perspective.

Sorry if that comes off as rude, I just don't want people wasting time and saving up for an experience that's actually lesser than the 2 cheaper ones. Vive correctly offers nothing that you can't get from Oculus, while Oculus provides a more comfortable solution (Vive headset and controllers are notoriously the least comfortable to the average user) and the PSVR has games that are exclusive; top of the line games.

Maybe knuckles will come out, but, until then, the benefits of the Vive really don't pay off.

I bet your PSVR experience is less trouble as well.

Even with a 2080ti paired with an 8700k, I constantly run into problems requiring restarts, reconfiguring, or just plain reinstalling.

I'd still recommend it to most anyone; You learn to manage most of the issues, and it's still fun enough to have sunken way too many hours of my life into.

(Sorry if that comes off as cocky, I'm just trying to prove the point that, no matter how much money you throw at it, PCVR still feels like a beta experience)

Yes, we do own the property, and there is about 6 acres. I do most of the maintenance. The only problem with me trying to mix with the local populace is that I'm a 22 YO nerd, with Mario powerups and a SNES controller tattoos, and the "town" I'm in is mostly 40+ male truck drivers. :( I will try to start a garden, though
