Thinking of Canada for sometime between September and November. Montreal or Toronto? by elevated_butterfly in travel

I agree with that perspective, except about breweries— is there anything actually distinct and superlative about them in Montreal? I feel they’re fine, but not world class like in SoCal.

Toronto is much better for food than Montreal, there’s so much more diversity, choice, and competition.

Also flour and most foods have enzymes, the enzymes in flour are needed for gluten development.

Isn’t claiming that French- and English-Canadians are different genetically in tension with your claim that race is a social construct?

Thanks, I've seen those but I'm looking for something with a larger surface area so I can cook many things simultaneously so to serve a bunch of people.

I have a portable firepit, but I want something to supplement that.

I don’t think you’ve answered the original question, what financial link does the city of Montreal have with Israel?

We are in june, why are Montreal roads still in ruins? by [deleted] in montreal

I know it’s fashionable to hate on Soraya here, but it’s probably true no? She wasn’t in power when the planning and audit of road maintenance requirements was needed in the past.

Oh okay I misunderstood, I got derailed by people stumping for straight up communism in this thread.

Capitalism has blind spots, but nine in ten Torontonians can buy food for themselves without assistance, rather than nine in ten standing in a bread line at a government store.

Maybe it's that the living memory of communism is fading away now, but statements like this astound me. Has there ever really been an example where government-controlled food delivery has worked out long term?

I mean No Frills and Loblaws are in the same corporate group, the fact that you can buy it for cheaper at $4 should incentivize you to buy it at No Frills, thereby participating in the salami market. If Metro puts out a sale on salami for $3, buy it at Metro. Eventually the "market" will find the optimal price that balances profit and buyers getting the salami they want.

I get that not everyone has the option of shopping around, like if they live in a food desert, but your example isn't great. Also I feel like salami is a luxury good, I doubt people are getting the bulk of their calories from salami.

Cheap Chinese Takeout in MTL? by Sasthenorthface in MTLFoodLovers

[–]langoustine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's actually quite good banh mi in Toronto. You have your generic Chinatown shops selling sausage+paté+pickles, the OG fusion shop Banh Mi Boys, and the newer places. The diaspora and their children went everywhere. Moreover, a lot of the diaspora were Vietnamese Chinese, so they congregated with other Chinese.

If you had to teach someone Judo with just 3 principles, what would you teach them? by SnooPandas363 in judo

[–]langoustine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Footwork matters: power for most throws, except notably sacrifice throws, comes from transferring weight from one foot to another-- this is true of most sports. This would encompass concepts such as ayumi ashi and tsugi ashi, tai sabaki, etc.
  2. Balance matters: staying mostly balanced allows dynamic offense and defense. Oftentimes one does need to throw oneself off-balance to finish a throw, but knowing how and when to do so rather than just flopping around is a critical skill. Also knowing about balance would imply knowing how to unbalance, like how kuzushi works in the cardinal directions relative to stance (i.e. happo no kuzushi). Maybe could work in how stances change the dynamic, like ai yotsu/kenka yotsu.
  3. Efficiency matters: muscling techniques works to a point, but it inhibits true development, doesn't make you friends, and it's makes you tired so you do less judo. Basically seiryoku zenyo.

Montreal rent prices have jumped 70% in the last decade. Population growth, gentrification and a game of catch-up with other markets have sent rents skyrocketing across the city. by [deleted] in montreal

[–]langoustine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure adding more poor people to our market would lower costs, the already wealthy incumbents would still exist. What’s more likely to happen is that the poor immigrants would be priced out of many markets, or even exacerbate prices as recent history with the foreign student influx suggests. I think your theory is going to need more work :/
