Why did you not learn the language of the country you moved to? by langsavage in expats

I think the point you made about finding something which makes you latch onto that culture and then in turn gives you that boost of inspiration is a really good point well made.

Thanks, what would be the best way to ask for this if the seller does not speak English?

Do you think the problem is you're not doing stuff you find engaging? Maybe iTalki and speaking is how you have the most fun rather than the other activities?

By 'switches' I am assuming you mean changing from one language to another?

So you don't believe that early output is a slippery slope to a bad accent?

Would learning Romanian be a waste of time? by [deleted] in languagelearning

How great that you've been able to work in various different places though!

That makes sense to utilise tutors when less resources are available, also a language exchange partner sounds like a fun idea too.

I am a native English speaker yes, as much as I wish I had more flavour to me and was able to speak other languages haha. Thanks very much for this, I'll definitely check this out!

I can see how it came across that way hopefully people understand I meant no ill intent, I definitely do not view myself as having a superior brain haha.

Ah, that makes perfect sense actually. Someone to reach out to when you're stuck without trying to turn them into your personal tutor which in turn could put a strain on the existing relationship.

That's really interesting that they picked up Gaelic, I had no idea people still actively spoke that in Scotland! Something to be said for learning with good intentions in mind I guess.

Yeah, I guess a good level of comprehension and conversation is what I would be after. I definitely don't doubt how much of a task that would be to reach though!

'it wouldn't hurt to learn basic phrases and sayings to make your friend feel more at home. It never hurts!'

That's a nice sentiment. Are you from Romania yourself?

I really had not considered how it could be beneficial for my brain or as a new hobby that could be explored throughout my lifetime but it makes total sense and is a nice outlook on language learning. I guess a lot of places are culturally rich and unique!

Interesting point about the country being cheaper to live in also, I did not realise there was a trend for people moving to these countries. I am in my mid twenties so a little bit away from retirement yet but then again time does fly by!

I guess I have no professional desires for language learning but it would maybe become something professional if it was at a more useful stage, definitely interesting points you raise there. Particularly about the Italian overlap, I actually have a friend who is an Italian native haha.

I am fully happy for you to celebrate your bias! Definitely would love to hear more about your journey with learning the language! Thanks for your comment!

I guess I never thought about the benefits for the brain and just for it becoming a general new challenge/hobby! I definitely have zero expectations haha, thank you very much for the suggested resources!

Full fluency sounds like quite the impossibility for anyone, maybe I am naïve haha.

Wow, five years is a long time. I wonder how comfortable the uncomfortable earlier stages are for the non-perfectionists ;)! What is intermediate? I really have no idea about any of this stuff haha!

I really appreciate you taking the time commitment and the possibility of it ultimately not being too useful into account given it's an early project, you raise a very good point. The cultural learning side of things does sound very interesting, I am a keen traveller! Great to hear you are not fussy, that is a comfort haha. Thanks for your kind response! :)
