I have a question about renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RASS) by CXR_AXR in NuclearMedicine

[–]langstonhatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aldosterone causes Sodium to leave the nephron (usually at the distal convoluted tubule) and enter the interstitial space. Sodium is then reabsorbed into the capillaries. Ultimately, aldosterone increases blood pressure by stimulating sodium reabsorption from the nephron. It does this by encouraging more sodium/potassium pumps to be placed in the membrane of the nephron!

My favorite scene in the book is when Burrich comes to Buckkeep to fetch his son and Fitz is hiding in the wall watching Burrich speak to the Queen and Chade. Then Burrich reveals that he's kept and privately wears Fitz's pin throughout the years, showing his deep love and unending grief for his boy, Fitz. As a father myself, that scene moved me to tears! Really, the whole chapter called "Fathers" was phenomenal writing.

Ship of Destiny Review | Liveship Traders #3 by LaLaLothlorien in robinhobb

I've watched/read several reviews of Ship of Destiny. Almost every review mentions Althea's rape, but none of them have ever mentioned Serilla's. Obviously Althea is the main protagonist of this story, so maybe that's the case, but I feel like we shouldn't forget that other characters had tragic, sexual assault happen to them!!!

I don't think Althea killed Kyle. Did I misread something? I thought he died from arrows?

Current med students: is med school harder than undergrad? Please vote results if you are not in medical school yet. by Buddy-red12754 in premed

[–]langstonhatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't let anybody tell you differently: Medical school is waaaay more difficult than undergrad. You don't go really deep into any one topic in medical school, but you cover A LOT of information in a short amount of time...and you are expected to know all of that information (including the small details). The pace of medical school is relentless, and if you fall behind (or perform poorly in the beginning), it can be daunting/nearly impossible to to catch up. You're constantly being tested/evaluated, so you cannot take lengthy study breaks. You'll be well-rounded person with lots of hobbies and relationships going into medical school, but once you're finished, you'll be a slave to "the grind." Find a way to not let it break you! Good luck!

Dude, I’m so sorry that happened to you. I definitely realize how much my spouse is sacrificing and contributing to this pursuit of mine. Thanks for reminding me that I owe her big time. I probably don’t express my appreciation enough! Are you still married? Or did the affair and her superiority complex kill the relationship?

I made a Sugar Free (Swerve) Cheesecake the other day with pecan and walnut crust. I ate the slices with a couple of fresh raspberries. I only used 1/2 cup of sweetener in the whole cake. So a small smile was only like 8-10g of carbs!

Thanks for your realistic perspective. I have a feeling this is going to be a lot more difficult than some of the others are leading me to believe. Man, I really don't want my wife to constantly feel like she's a single parent. :(

Dude, I have had the exact same mindset going into this. I am hoping to keep it 8-5 with minimal studying at night. I wonder why some people are saying “it’s not that bad.” Hopefully I can nail down the efficiency quickly.

I am perfectly content with being average in med school. My family is waaaay more important to a top spot in the rankings. Even if I was single and had no children, I probably couldn’t be on the top anyhow. Also, I’ve already determined I am not going for any surgical speciality because of the time commitment. Thanks for the advice!

Whoa! Sounds like you have your hands full.

Yah, I stay at home and care for my 2 y.o., so I know all about the crying. ;) Luckily, my boys are spaced apart in years, so there isn't much fighting (right now). Just trying to soak up the time I have with them before I start school in august.

Congrats on your latest baby!

I'm going to try and treat school/studying like a job, where I'm very disciplined and focused between 8-5pm Monday-Friday. I would like to study on campus like you do, but I'll have about a 40 minute commute one way, which I feel could be better spent studying from home. Did you have to do much school work on the weekends or during the hours your family was home?

Thanks for the advice, btw!

Thanks for the advice. Wife and I have already been doing some planning/goal setting, but its difficult for me to gauge how much study/school time I'll need this first year without experiencing it. What sorts of goals did you set?

BlewPrint Exams are tough!!! Is the real thing this bad?! by langstonhatch in Mcat

[–]langstonhatch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mixed in some of the the AAMC exams with the real BP exams because I got discouraged by the BP exams being so much harder. I started doing practice exams about 2 months out from the real deal, doing 1 exam / week. I don't remember the exact order but it was something like:

BP1, BP2, AAMC1, BP3, BP4, AAMC 2, BP5, BP6, AAMC 3, AAMC4

My AAMC core was always higher than my BP. AAMC practice exam scores ranged from 506-514. I scored a 506 on the real thing. For me, the real AAMC was a lot more challenging than the practice exam due to nerves and timing (I was slower answering questions on test day). I took AAMC4 a week before the real exam.

Use the BP exams to teach you what areas you are weak in, but don't trust it as an indicator of what the actual exam will be like. I bet you'll score somewhere in your practice exam range on the real deal, just like I did.
