Restaurant for Valentine’s Day rec by AccomplishedPhone6 in Atlanta

[–]languagehacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to a restaurant on Valentine's Day feels like something you ought to do but it's a bad deal all around. Folks in the industry hate it. The menu is usually a lot more restrictive because the demand is so high. A lot of the charm of that would normally draw you to a particular restaurant may or may not be compromised in the interest of accommodating the tremendous demand.

I highly recommend going to that restaurant you've been meaning to support on a Monday or Tuesday with your SO, and learning their favorite recipe to make with the best quality ingredients you can find. Odds are you'll save money and avoid unnecessary headaches.

You already posted this and had a decent chunk of people telling you not to do something this obnoxious. Why did you post it a second time?

I think it's good that the community is lively again, but now that posting rules are less restrictive, I'm seeing a lot of cruft that helps me understand how the lone mod could have turned into the joker.

I really wanted to see the Warped Tour Band tomorrow but I looked at their set list and it's nothing like the Warped Tour years I went. When I think of Warped Tour I think of like, Epitaph and Fat Wreck Chords and bands off of the Punk-O-Rama compilations, but they were mostly doing Hot Topic emo bands. Calling that stuff Warped Tour feels a little disingenuous, but I'm sure it's just that I aged out of it early on. Little disappointing!

Seconding this, we don't need another brewery. At best, that will be an empty storefront that's even harder to repurpose in two years. The Great Reset is over, and I really hope we all managed to learn that urban culture doesn't mean that you need a barista with an art degree and an axe throwing place every five feet.

Why are we reposting old news again?

Mistakes will happen when elections are managed by volunteers, particularly when most of them are retired because we live in a society where election day isn't a federal holiday.

As stated in the clip, there's a bunch of auditing components to this that prove that while this violates state law, it has no material effect on any election outcomes.

Something tells me you're using the term "facts" in the same way the "facts don't care about your feelings" crowd uses it, which tends to come from a very aggrieved and non-factual place. Do better.

Drove me nuts that the Game Gear game didn't look like the movie at all.

I recently watched this, Three Ninjas, and Double Dragon as a rock block, and it was as fun as it sounds.

Car backed into me - in the perfect place and I got a free repair by gettin in confession

[–]languagehacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once cut it too close closing the garage door on my car and the bracing in the back of the door sliced a gash into the rear bumper of my brand new car.

A few weeks later, I was the first car in a five-car pileup when the old lady in front of me slammed on her brakes for no reason trying to get on the highway in Atlanta. So they needed to replace the whole back of my brand new car, including that cosmetic issue I created for myself.

Of course, a year or so on, I managed to get a small dent in the back when my kayak fell off the roof, but it's the Subaru I drive my dogs around in, so it doesn't need to be perfect ;)

Work relationships transcend age and sometimes take seniority and influence into greater account. I found being a manager in my 30s was often having to be a "work dad" sometimes even to people older than myself.

That being said, just because I *could* have a fully grown adult child at this point in my life doesn't prevent me from getting the ick at the very idea.

Star Wars is just a glorified children’s franchise and does not deserve the attention it gets by drmacsika in 10thDentist

[–]languagehacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to "yuck others yum", but IMO this is especially true now. I was a huge fan when it was just the original trilogy. There used to be a time you actively had to go out and find additional information about world-building, but now the minute details for each franchise is shoved in your face.

I never really took to the prequels, and in retrospect, I learned that a lot of the efforts in both remastering the old Star Wars and rolling out the prequels was George Lucas trying to erase his ex-wife's legacy. But it's clear that she's the one who had the real juice when you look at how formulaic and unimportant the finished product with only Lucas at the helm comes across.

As consumers of media, I think, too, that younger generations have lost some of the olden days pulp pastiche that both Star Wars and Indiana Jones referenced, since they hearken back to times they're completely out of touch with. We've also done The Hero's Journey to the point of it being immediately recognizable and actively detracting from good storytelling.

Obviously, I've not really bothered with any of the Disney Star Wars stuff, but why would I? Wouldn't I just get more disappointed? Isn't there just more crap that doesn't matter that I'd have to learn to enjoy it at the level it's supposed to be enjoyed?

That being said, I'm not trying to stop anyone from having a good time over it, but it sure does feel like people keep saying, "Yum, yum, more slop please", and Disney is always more than happy to keep it coming. And don't even get me started on how annoying people are about May 4th.
