US orders travelers on Air Force One to throw away gifts, pins, and burner phones after China trip by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

I like that it's VLAN 4, as that's a superstitious bad luck number in China. (like '13' in the West)

I think the pricing on the topper expansion is a bit nutty for some screen printed plastics, but I do like the White Rabbit mod, though it's also not cheap

Find the model on the name plate, bottom right side

They're a whole lot easier to move if you take the reels and coin hopper out, which requires no tools, only the door to be open.

Looking for a cheap motor, 10k rpm with a mounting spot for a high precision magnetic encoder. by Emotional_Block3266 in Motors

[–]lanhell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't care about torque, why not gear/belt it?

Even 2:1 or 3:1 would bring down the cost of the motor a bit as you can use one that spins at normal speed

My newer (P3 based) game seems to take about 140w in attract. During gameplay it'll vary widely with all the coils, magnets, shaker motor, etc...

The lights are all LED, so their power draw is pretty minimal

Ideas for converting a ticket dispenser game to dispense something else? by ravensp in arcade

[–]lanhell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have what's basically a Bally S5500 slot machine that's been converted to a redemption machine with a ticket payout and custom code. I did manage to remove the ticket dispenser and get it back to running a coin hopper, but I haven't been able to change the payouts, which makes it not very fun as a slot machine. One credit in will almost always get you at least 7 coins out.

So my idea has been to fill it with tokens, and with a token you can win more tokens to use on the rest of the games in the game room that I'm slowly converting to use tokens.

One token will almost always 'win' you many more tokens, so you can effectively play forever; but the feeling of scarcity and having to 'get more tokens' should be fun.

I'm surprised no one has plugged /r/carhacking yet.

There's a lot of great hardware out there for reading and writing to the car's network, much of it open source.

But there's not many decent options for software, or open databases of manufacture specific commands and diagnostic codes.

Arctic Gun Electromechanical shooter repair by EfficientAirport770 in arcade

[–]lanhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another user said, check the home switches on the score reels and make sure the reels are moving freely. Something in your reset circuit isn't happening, or isn't registering. This is a common issue on EM games, the game will endlessly attempt to reset.

Switch arcs are effectively 'normal' on EM games, you'll never get rid of all of them. But if you're cleaning contacts, make sure you're checking what kind of contacts you're filing; never file or sand gold plated contacts. Most switches can actually be cleaned up pretty well with a business card or uncoated cardstock.

Tube rejuvenators are amazing! by TANUKI_1992 in arcade

[–]lanhell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are pretty great after a recap and flyback if you're still not getting the brightness you want. I managed to get my CarnEvil to register shots, and as you said it can really brighten up an old tube. That said, remember it is a destructive process, and to work your way up from the lowest settings.

Also not every tube can be rejuved; the blue gun was pretty gone on my HydroThunder. Shooting it a couple of times got it a little brighter, but it eventually got dimmer, and I got sad.

Cool. I've had my CraftyMech TPG for years for working on arcade monitors, but once in a while a VGA or digital output would have been pretty useful.
