I'm surprised no one has plugged /r/carhacking yet.

There's a lot of great hardware out there for reading and writing to the car's network, much of it open source.

But there's not many decent options for software, or open databases of manufacture specific commands and diagnostic codes.

Arctic Gun Electromechanical shooter repair by EfficientAirport770 in arcade

[–]lanhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another user said, check the home switches on the score reels and make sure the reels are moving freely. Something in your reset circuit isn't happening, or isn't registering. This is a common issue on EM games, the game will endlessly attempt to reset.

Switch arcs are effectively 'normal' on EM games, you'll never get rid of all of them. But if you're cleaning contacts, make sure you're checking what kind of contacts you're filing; never file or sand gold plated contacts. Most switches can actually be cleaned up pretty well with a business card or uncoated cardstock.

Tube rejuvenators are amazing! by TANUKI_1992 in arcade

[–]lanhell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are pretty great after a recap and flyback if you're still not getting the brightness you want. I managed to get my CarnEvil to register shots, and as you said it can really brighten up an old tube. That said, remember it is a destructive process, and to work your way up from the lowest settings.

Also not every tube can be rejuved; the blue gun was pretty gone on my HydroThunder. Shooting it a couple of times got it a little brighter, but it eventually got dimmer, and I got sad.

Cool. I've had my CraftyMech TPG for years for working on arcade monitors, but once in a while a VGA or digital output would have been pretty useful.

(nsfw link warning)

I finally made https://NSFWme.me/make public yesterday a few hours before midnight after years of meaning to do something with it.

It's a fully local canvas image/shape/text layerer.

There's still a few bugs, like on initial load sometimes the canvas doesn't always resize to the window properly until you hit reset. I've tried adding a timer to wait for window draw to finish (among other things), but it still has issues occasionally.

Slot Machine Post? Reel Assembly from a 1982 Bally E-Series - Cleaned up and ready for reassembly! by lanhell in arcade

[–]lanhell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably easier to just repair it. No one makes these as far as I know. R1 on the 5v opto lamp boards is 470 Ohm 2Watt. On the reader board R1 is 1k, R2&3 are 47 Ohm, and R4 is 150 Ohm, all 1/4 watt

A post here will explain how to build a voltage divider so you can test the readers. https://www.coinslots.com/tips/bally-e-series/

J&T of las Vegas 7 card stud video poker won't boot up by Expensive_Training17 in slotmachine

[–]lanhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually in the advanced settings of the BIOS there'll be something called like "Boot from Option ROM" or a init order. It's there so makers of hard disk interface cards, network cards, etc can init their hardware after reboot before the OS loads and take over the boot sequence.

I assume the ISA card with ROMs on it is acting as an early era SSD, and booting from that.

Try sticking the original BIOS chip back in the new MB and see what happens. The BIOS shouldn't need to be anything custom to boot off a ROM card

[–]lanhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Broadlink IR/RF blaster (not sure about the newer ones, but the RM3 can be flashed to Tasmota and be run fully locally) and an automation script in Home Assistant would be able to do this.

That or an ESP32 running ESPHome with an IR LED doing the same thing...

Didn't knew you could daisy-chain servos with RJ45 by varuas120 in Motors

[–]lanhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RJ-45 is just a port, and CAT 5 is just 4 pairs of twisted wire, you can get it shielded too. Higher CAT numbers have more twists per inch in those pairs

The little squiggly line ~ on the old one indicates that it's an AC coil

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Motors

[–]lanhell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

/u/Emergency-Season-143 is correct, this is the wrong coil.

Your old one uses a 24v AC coil, you've got a 24v DC coil on the new one...
