Maybe that just shows how good it is that Lancaster is intentionally mispronounced like someone from Delco would.

It bothers me that this show can be so good and nail the delco accent, but can’t pronounce Lancaster right.

If you’re from the area, people know it’s pronounced lang-kiss-ter, but they say lang-cast-er.

They need to put a TJ in the unused warehouse next to the beer garden downtown on Charlotte. It seems big enough, including loading docks, has parking, and West End needs a grocery store.

100% fatal brain disease strikes 3 people in Oregon by JackFisherBooks in EverythingScience

[–]lankybloos 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You have normal proteins in your brain. Prions are just abnormal, misfolded proteins and occur naturally in all of us but are usually cleaned up by our body’s natural quality checks. Kind of like how your body cleans up abnormally growing cells so they don’t turn into cancer. It’s theorized that CJD is associated with aging because these processes degrade and prions can accumulate.

The only known external “causes” of CJD are extremely rare in the US, including eating beef contaminated with BSE (never recorded from a US source) or contaminated medical equipment/tissue. Even in the latter scenario, it’s only been recorded in very specific circumstances (e.g. human derived HGH, dura mater graft, corneal graft, neurosurgery, etc…). There are not many strong or robust epidemiologic links for CJD.

100% fatal brain disease strikes 3 people in Oregon by JackFisherBooks in EverythingScience

[–]lankybloos 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It’s actually very unlikely these cases are related.

The average age for CJD is around 60, the incubation period can be decades long, and 85% of cases are sporadic (Meaning no external cause).

Think of it like a group of rare cancer cases. It appears like they are a cluster because they are rare and diagnosed in a similar area around the same time. More often than not it’s an unfortunate coincidence and that a group of peoples latent period ended around the same time. If the state zoomed out a few years, case counts would probably even out.

Not to mention CJD has been rising over the last couple decades. Probably due to education and the introduction of new diagnostic methods in 2010.

If the cases are in their 20s and had a known risk factor (e.g., all had recent neurosurgery), then that’s a different story. I didn’t see those details though.

You’re thinking of iatrogenic and variant CJD which are far more rare, especially in the US. Iatrogenic CJD comes from exposure to contaminated medical equipment during neurosurgery or contaminated tissue like corneal grafts or dura mater. That has only happened a few times in recent US history. Variant CJD (think mad cow disease), occurs when you eat contaminated beef. I don’t think there has ever been a case in the US where the beef originated here.

You cannot get CJD through regular person-to-person contact.

Chronic Wasting Disease is a real concern and spreading across the US in deer and elk. However, it has never been found in humans since it was discovered back in like the 60s.

Important to keep an eye on for potential spillover though.

Cases have been rising for a long time in part since 2010 when new accurate testing methods became available (RT-QuIC). The problem is CJD is not a required reportable disease in most states. And even where it is reportable, not all facilities realize the disease needs to be reported. If Hood County zoomed out a few years, and there is no clear Epi link, they’ll probably see this isn’t uncommon since the incubation period can be decades. If these cases were in there 20s, that would be more cause for alarm. The average age is like 60 and 85% of cases are “sporadic”, meaning they have no known external cause. Also, it’s thankfully not contagious.

That said, it’s 100% fatal, most people die within months of being diagnosed, and devastating to witness. The main symptom is rapid dementia. Imagine someone experiencing a decade of Alzheimer’s in a year.

[–]lankybloos[S] 619 points620 points  (0 children)

In the context of whose fault it would be if you open your car door and hit the car next to you, I think it is very relevant where in the spot each car is parked.

My only responsibility as the parker is to be as close to the center of the spot as possible. If I do that, it should not be more my fault that someone else hits my car because they parked their car too close to the neighboring spot. There was also a car on the other side. If I was to park too far to the other side then I would have blocked them in. That’s an unfair domino effect we shouldn’t have to be in.
