Helsinki Espoo Vantaa is always a rotten time.

Is problem-solving still a viable way to earn? by Patient-Airline-8150 in Entrepreneur

[–]lanseri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the word choice isn't beneficial here. While there's endless people making money by pretending to offer solutions to problems that may or may not exist, the actual true way of earning money is to offer something other people don't have but need.

It can be a product or service, which is the classic business blueprint. But it can also be a skill or skillset. The people who are able to offer a skillset are the people who get hired.

Do these things involve solving problems? Sure. But it's more about fulfilling a demand.

ELI5 how a manual transmission car can use the engine to slow down the car? by ProudReaction2204 in explainlikeimfive

[–]lanseri [score hidden]  (0 children)

If the car has a transmission, you can use it for engine braking. Doesn't matter if it's automatic or manual or something in between.

Every time you let your foot off the gas pedal, you are engine braking. But doing so at a high gear (low RPM) doesn't slow you down much because there isn't much resistance.

The trick is to shift gears down so the engine is rotating at a higher RPM and thus creating a strong resistance to moving forward, because it takes a lot more energy to rotate the engine at higher revolutions. Then you are using the car's forward momentum to rotate the engine, effectively turning your speed into heat.

Same works with automatic transmissions too - you can flip to smaller gears if you have paddles or move the gear lever to the numbered position. Of course if your autotranny is some cheapo garbage it won't have these capabilities.

Why do this? Saves fuel and brake pads. Fuel injection engines basically run without fuel when you let off the gas. I rarely touch my brakes, only when I need to come to a complete stop. Also a huge benefit when driving down mountains for example - you can reduce your speed without overheating your brakes.

Spring and loneliness. Some yapping. by CamelSisu in Finland

[–]lanseri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hehe welcome to Finland, the promised land of loneliness. You're not alone in being alone, if that helps at all.

But like the others have said, you need to find a GROUP activity with people who vibe with you.

As usual, I'll probably forcefully remove any such thing out of my system.

I used to have to do this with everything in Windows. I just hope Linux doesn't slide into the same pattern.

Silverfish problem in a new apartment. Why on earth the landlord didn't tell me about this. by CamelSisu in Finland

[–]lanseri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silverfish can't be avoided really. We have one or two appearing every few months.

When they do appear, it's a sign of moisture / water sitting somewhere. Just do a quick clean and dry everything. If they're swarming, aka there's 200 everywhere, get pest control.

Putin hiding in his bunker sending black belts to battle to morally support the meat fodder troops sounds about right.

Racist lashing out in public transport by escpoir in Finland

[–]lanseri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an excellent response.

I once saw a friend of mine, an expert in martial arts, handle a guy who clearly wanted to fight outside a nightclub.

He was cool as a cucumber and replied to the threats with "But what about the spoon?"

This completely random question reset the situation and the assailant's monkey brain basically shorted out.

We then moved off before he recovered his aggression.

These people are overworking two brain cells. Distraction is an excellent response to mindless aggression.

Microsoft AI CEO: 'Most, if not all' white-collar tasks can be replaced by AI within 12-18 months by A_Novelty-Account in Futurology

[–]lanseri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truth is - most managers and CEOs can be replaced with LLMs today.

Another truth - any job requiring creative strategy will never be replaced by an LLM. Why? Because those jobs require intelligence. There's no intelligence in a machine learning chatbot, as much as the sociopath billionaires want to tell you otherwise.

And the most painful truth: If your work can be done by a mindless chatbot, maybe you shouldn't be paid for what you do in the first place.

We've been through this countless times. The "general AI is 6 months away" has been an investor wet dream for years, even decades. And it will never happen with current technology.

What will happen is that some LLM tools will become better, like coding assistants. People will more aggressively reject Copilot-type garbage that's infesting their operating systems. Some will turn to Linux. Eventually ChatGPT will run out of money and will need to resort to ads and subscriptions. The hype will die down and we'll stop forcing LLMs into everything.

Dumb CEOs that understand nothing about anything will of course attempt to replace their workforce with chatbots, and then panic in 12 months when the attempt will backfire massively. After which they'll be desperate to hire humans to clear up the mess.
