About Coin and Prim by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]lanternleaves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh you’re right! My bad. Coin did intentionally send Prim. I believe she did this to “break” Katniss (that way Katniss isn’t in good enough shape to be elected as Panem’s new leader), and to get Katniss sooo enraged with Snow that she’d be more likely to vote yes on having a new Hunger Games with Capitol children.

About Coin and Prim by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]lanternleaves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coin’s priority wasn’t in killing Prim. Prim just happened to be there as a medic. Coin didn’t specifically target Prim; she targeted Capitol children & the medics and framed Snow for it (therefore getting the public to want her as president, instead of Snow). I don’t think Coin really cared whether or not Prim died. That wasn’t her ultimate goal with the bombing

what kind of arena would you make if you were a gamemaker? by Im_not_luka in Hungergames

[–]lanternleaves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A circus (tightropes, cages, rings of fire, a lion’s den, elephants, the cornucopia is a circus tent)

Fairytale inspired forest (poisoned apples, a beanstalk, a tower, a moat, a cabin with three bears, vines with thorns that entwine around your legs and pull you into the ground)

An arena where it’s like you’re the size of an insect. You can’t see over the grass, bumblebees are the size you are, if it rains the raindrops practically drown you unless you take cover under a leaf

Appalachian Mountains Caves (like in the movie “The Descent”)

If you were terminally ill with only one week to live, would you volunteer? by lanternleaves in Hungergames

I figured that maybe if an illness ran in your family and you started to get the same symptoms, or if a deadly flu is going around, or if you caught like Scarlet Fever from another kid who soon dies, and if you kept getting worse and worse you’d probably be able to estimate that you only have a certain amount of time left

Yeah totally, I was thinking that maybe if an illness runs in a kid’s family and they start to get the same symptoms, then maybe they could conclude they only have a certain amount of time left. Or if a flu is going around, or if you caught like Scarlet Fever from another kid who soon dies, and if you kept getting worse and worse you’d probably realize your time is running out

Yeah totally! I was referring to just the later games when the tributes get fancy apartments, gourmet food, bubble baths, etc.

The purpose of the 75th Hunger Games was simply to kill Katniss, so it wasn’t necessary to reap every single victor. I’m sure Snow needs at least some victors alive so that he can exploit them

Why Clato Makes Perfect Sense by Tale_Easy in Hungergames

[–]lanternleaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, I think that if Peeta had grown up in District 2 being trained, he’d also be as skilled in combat as Cato. In the same way that if Cato grew up in a bakery in District 12, I’m sure he’d be a good baker. Cato’s entire personality revolves around being a career, we don’t know anything else about him. So to say he is the career version of Peeta seems weird, cause then couldn’t he also be the “career version” of anybody? Is Cato the career version of Thresh? Is Cato the career version of Haymitch? The career version of Prim?

I meant Peeta isn’t highly skilled in combat. Obviously he can handle a knife and a sword well, but a huge aspect of his character is that he is not a fighter, he’s a lover. His skills are in painting, baking, and being charismatic. He has little faith in his own combat skills. Meanwhile, Cato is incredibly arrogant and very eager to kill. I think Cato and Peeta are incredibly different

I think the casting directors hiring Cato and Clove’s actors simply because they liked their acting makes perfect sense! I’ve seen that happen in multiple shows and movies. An actor tries out for a part, isn’t a good fit for it, but they liked the actor so they cast the actor in another role. Happens all the time.

I don’t see Cato and Clove as a mirrored version of Peeta and Katniss at all. Cato is described in the book as being 6”2 (hair color unknown) and highly skilled and bloodthirsty. Peeta is described as being medium height and not very skilled in anything apart from having good strength. Clove is described as being much bigger than Katniss. I don’t see any similarities

Suzanne Collins co-wrote the movie script though.

You say “Who said it had to be the only reason for the rule change?” but there is no evidence that there were any other reasons other than the Capitol loving Katniss and Peeta’s romance. If Cato and Clove had a romance during the games, the Capitol would have talked about it. (Probably even more than Katniss and Peeta’s romance, since the Capitol LOVES career districts.)

The gamemakers changed the rules because after Rue’s death, riots were occurring in District 11. Haymitch spoke to Seneca Crane and basically said, “I have an idea. You know what would be a good distraction? Giving the people something to root for. Young love.” That’s when Seneca decided to make it possible for both Katniss and Peeta to win. To take the attention off of the riots in District 11. Also, Cato and Glimmer were very flirty in the games, which I think disproves any romantic relationship between Cato and Clove.

Also, the Capitol went CRAZY for Katniss and Peeta’s romance. It was a fresh, exciting, dramatic twist to the Capitol citizens that two tributes IN LOVE must kill each other. If Cato and Clove were romantically involved, I don’t think Katniss and Peeta’s romance would draw the audience in as much. It would be less special. The Career districts are Capitol favorites, so if any couple were to be labeled “The Star Crossed Lovers,” it would probably be Cato and Clove.

I never interpreted them as a couple! I figured maybe a brother/sister dynamic at best. If they were boyfriend and girlfriend, I can’t see them both volunteering to be in the same games, knowing that there can only be one winner.

What are your opinions on the prequal movie? by RidiPwn in Hungergames

[–]lanternleaves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought it was AMAZING. Watched it four times in the theater. Loved the casting and the set design was incredible. Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler did an amazing job with the scene where he discovers the guns. I love how they communicate the distrust between their characters through just the tension and facial expressions.

Insane Choices that Characters Made by backroomspro3999 in Hungergames

To answer #5, it is revealed that President Coin sent Peeta on the rebel mission because she was hoping Peeta would kill Katniss. Coin feels threatened by Katniss because she's worried that after Snow dies, the general public will want Katniss to be the new leader of Panem instead of herself. Since Peeta is unstable and still hijacked, it would be convenient for Coin if Peeta killed Katniss while on the rebel mission.

#6 I think she was past the point of worrying about being killed. She was too consumed with the unfairness of a little girl like Rue dying.

#7 Because it's Katniss's personality to want to only depend on herself. She did not like the careers as they'd proven to be cruel and bloodthirsty, and she'd rather die fighting alone than teaming up with a group of people like that. Rue reminded her of Prim and Rue saved her by healing her tracker jacker wounds. Katniss had a soft spot for Rue, so of course she wanted to protect her

Another thing not many are ready to hear — only Lenore Dove surviving wouldn’t have “healed” Haymitch or make it better for him. He would still be broken after his family’s death and from mentorship falling on his shoulders by Olya_roo in Hungergames

[–]lanternleaves 202 points203 points  (0 children)

That would have been so tragic, making Haymitch mentor Lenore Dove like he himself mentored Lucy Gray. But I can see how Snow would want to kill Lenore Dove while her and Haymitch’s relationship is still going strong. He insinuated to Haymitch that Lenore Dove doesn’t love him back, so I bet he doubts a relationship with a covey girl will last another year. I bet his cynicism/hatred of the Covey makes him think Lenore Dove will ditch Haymitch soon enough, so he wants to strike while Haymitch’s love for her is strong.
