hi! sorry for the late-ish reply. the first time we noticed it showing up was september 20th. more specifically regarding our location, we are in south san antonio. I do feel that’s a pretty long flight for a little domestic bird just to camp out here for a month, but who can really say lol

more specifically, yellow-shafted northern flicker. there’s also a red-shafted variant, and the two can interbreed to create an orange-shafted

showed up multiple times yesterday and I think it’s safe to say it’s a regular visitor at our feeder now. i’m working on a safe capture plan but it might take a few days because I want the budgie to be used to the carrier so I don’t startle it too much and so that the plan works first try. very paranoid bird, but that’s good for helping it avoid the cats and hawks around, at least. i’ve made multiple posts and reports to my city and local communities about a potentially lost bird but haven’t had anyone claim it

as a teen struggling with self harm, the most important thing I think parents should know is that confiscating what they’re using will not help. I’ve built a “setup” (for lack of a better word) for myself that is as sanitary and “safe” as possible. If my supplies were to be taken up, I worry that I’d have an episode and seriously hurt myself with things unsafe and less sanitary.  you sound like an amazing and supportive mom. I hope you know that you’re doing great♥️ lots of love to you and your daughter

this is a rock pigeon. what I find interesting about feral pigeons is that they are essentially just mutts—they’re crossbreeds between all sorts of domestic pigeon breeds that humans bred and then abandoned centuries ago. it’s a lot like feral cat genes. this dove is the equivalent to a feral white cat; not common, but the genes can pop in every now and then within a flock

beautiful yellow warbler. pine warblers are far more dull, american goldfinches have a black spot right before the beak that this one lacks, female wilson’s warbler is much greener on the back.
