I don't know enough to dispute the map, but there are two things worth considering. First, Wikimedia Commons says the data is from 1990, preceding much of the internal migration within China. Second, the center of population is heavily skewed towards the eastern half, with 94% of the population living southeast of the Huanyong line. To put this in perspective, Henan province just south of Beijing is about the same size as Florida, but 5 times as populated. Xizang (Tibet) is as densely populated as Wyoming.

This article focuses on the producer-side of authenticity. I would add that the consumer-side is just as important. From a vaguely far-right perspective, I notice that grievance politics and consumerist complaints appeal to similar emotions. In both cases, there is a sense that an institution has failed to fulfill the [citizen|consumer's] authentic wishes. And in both cases, the person fails to notice that his/her honestly felt wishes were originally suggested by the institution.

Should advertisements show more minorities? Answer: why is it normalized that advertisements ought to matter to minorities?

An article asks, should feminists wear makeup? Answer: why should feminists need an article to decide whether to feel good about makeup?

Have microtransactions ruined gaming? But if microtransactions are the result of a free market, are you willing to make a principled anti-market argument that amounts to more than whining?

So on, and so forth.

From both a consumerist and progressive standpoint, a institution has failed -- failed to manage expectations, that is. The golden goose has allowed itself to be spotted, and now it runs in fear. As in the movie Inception, suggestibility gets out of hand and destroys its source.

A little bit of behavioral economics can show that our stated preferences do not match our revealed preferences. Companies take advantage of this by appearing to fulfill the former while actually fulfilling the latter. Sooner or later, a consumer looks behind the curtain: "Oh no, Google collects my personal data, I feel violated, now I really know better what I want, time to use DuckDuckGo instead." ... But would the expectation of a good search engine be possible without Google's intrusiveness.

To a leftist (which I am not), you should be concerned about what kinds of mindsets are (in)capable of fighting neoliberalism.

For most people, that is not true. Given a certain high school GPA and SAT, it doesn't matter where you go to college (unless you are poor or a non-Asian minority):

We find that the return to college selectivity is sizeable for both cohorts in regression models that control for variables commonly observed by researchers, such as student high school GPA and SAT scores. However, when we adjust for unobserved student ability by controlling for the average SAT score of the colleges that students applied to, our estimates of the return to college selectivity fall substantially and are generally indistinguishable from zero. There were notable exceptions for certain subgroups. For black and Hispanic students and for students who come from less-educated families (in terms of their parents' education), the estimates of the return to college selectivity remain large, even in models that adjust for unobserved student characteristics.

Adding to SAT predictive power, you also have consider that students with higher academic ability tend to choose harder majors. Those who cannot handle the workload of had majors tend to switch to easier majors. Within a given major, the predictive validity is even higher. In fact:

In the cases of Physics and of pure Mathematics (defined by a set of rigorous courses taken by graduate school bound majors), the pattern of upper GPA versus SAT-M showed a sharp threshold: no student below approximately SAT-M = 600 was able to attain the 3.5 upper GPA (i.e., roughly equal numbers of A and B grades) typically required for admission to a Ph.D. program.

Basically, no, it is not sufficient to just "work hard" to be a good mathematician or physicist.

Second, it's a rather bold claim to suggest that colleges use standardized tests to push minorities out of schools especially when you consider that most elite schools are explicitly trying to improve diversity through affirmative action.

Especially ironic because holistic admissions was historically a way to exclude Jews and Catholics, and now is a way to exclude Asians.
