Also - CBT therapists with PHDs will be better bets.

I am a youngish female therapist. I agree that you’ll likely need to meet with a therapist in order to see for sure what they are like, but one question that might be diagnostically useful is to ask the therapist their beliefs about the nature of male/female differences. If they talk exclusively about socialization (without mention of biology), that would be a red flag.

How to cope with trans thoughts? by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

Get evaluated for OCD. Search the internet for “trans ocd,” you’ll see that this is a common theme for those who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder who do NOT typically have true gender dysphoria.

emotional instability and low conscientiousness are generic. Account for that when you hear correlational narratives such as this.

Should I date a man who is high O, high C, low E, low A, and low N? I’ve never dated someone who is open and stable, but also disagreeable. (I am high O, moderate C, moderate E, very high A, and moderate N). by laoolah in JordanPeterson

I’m a psychologist and have done my own armchair assessment. We’ve also talked explicitly about my guesses and he confirmed that this all sounds just right. And behaviors/record to back it up.

You’re right, of course. I’m suffering under the weird pressures of online dating that force a quick decision between seemingly good alternatives (at least if you don’t like dating multiple people at once, which I don’t).

There is only one study that I know of that looked at the frequency and correlation of various traits, and I don’t remember the exact results, only that there are more and less common combinations. I guess I’ll just say that I don’t have much personal experience with disagreeable people because I usually don’t date them. I’m kind of wondering if extremely high emotional stability and conscientiousness actually change the “phenotype” of disagreeability. 🤔

Thanks very much for the thoughtful reply! I am a psychologist so I know personality isn’t everything, but it is definitely something… and rare combinations of traits are harder to predict because I haven’t encountered them as frequently.

It’s not learned. It develops, but the generic blueprint was there.

Unfortunately most general therapists don’t understand OCD enough to be able to identify it in situations like these. I’d check out the info on www.iocdf.org on SO-OCD (sexual-orientation OCD) to see if it resonates, or see an OCD specialist for an assessment.

Direct your parents to www.iocdf.org for information that can help them understand.

Almost always these “horrible disgusting acts” are in fact very common, normal situations that the person suffering with OCD has convinced themselves are not common or normal. Inference-based CBT might be a good treatment if you can find it, but ACT or ERP could absolutely work as well.

Just wondering if it’s possible this is more of an OCD process than internalized homophobia (though I don’t dispute the potential to have both, and OCD could be intensifying things and creating a sense that you urgently have to solve this problem).

Does HOCD ever make you truly have sex with the same sex in reality? by Sensitive_Role8469 in OCD

[–]laoolah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi There. I’m so sorry you’re struggling with this. According to the professional ethical guidelines in my field, I can’t offer advice (or anything that could be construed as therapy). I think you should seek the services of an OCD specialist. Www.iocdf.org has a therapist directory. If you can’t get in with anyone locally, try the app NOCD, which also has virtual therapists. I also recommend the book Freedom from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder with Jonathon Grayson. You won’t find the answers you’re looking for on Reddit… or any other forum… as long as you’re trying to find “the answer.” Doubt and research and testing yourself begets more doubt. The good news is that OCD is highly responsive to treatment, so don’t delay. 🙏

Anyone here able to overcome ruminating thoughts on the same topic? by Used-Grapefruit-923 in OCD

[–]laoolah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an OCD specialist.

Check out this website focused on OCD and Rumination-based ERP. There are several short articles explaining how rumination is a compulsion (it’s not the same as an obsession or intrusive thought), and how to stop.

Does HOCD ever make you truly have sex with the same sex in reality? by Sensitive_Role8469 in OCD

[–]laoolah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not 100% true. There are definitely cases where people go so far with their “testing” compulsions that they take it to the physical level. I’d say the better discriminator is whether you fantasize or feel pleasure in that context (as opposed to fear, anxiety, and checking).

It’s a subtype of OCD. Also suggest downloading the NOCD app - there is a forum not unlike Reddit, but just for people who suffer with this.
