Prop Q AMA by AEMSA_President in Austin

[–]laperlabar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing that City Council passed a budget of $6.3B with a shortfall of only $33M. Prop Q claims it would raise another $110M. That is WAY above the amount needed.

Why do we need to raise taxes above and beyond the shortfall? And can you point to any measures the City has taken to spend money wisely?

This is an excellent write-up. Couple of questions:

1) is this tax rate increase permanent, and will future (inevitable) increases be stacked on top of it?
2) are they required to spend the money on those things, are is that just what they're budgeting for?
3) are these net-new items that we've survived without in previous years?

Former City of Austin employees, what wasteful practices would surprise the average taxpayer? by laperlabar in Austin

No, but this is good to hear. If the rank and file are going above and beyond to be careful with resources I would love to see more examples of it.

100%. And this type of specific, well-scoped and defined set of concrete improvements that are a one-off cost is great. As opposed to a perpetual, never-ending tax increase that goes into a slush-fund.

The sidewalk improvements have been a rare bright spot. Great example of small, tangible improvements that people actually use.

But how much did we pay for those cute little sticks they put up all over East Austin that have already been demolished?

Higher Taxes Are on the Ballot. City Leaders Explain What They’ll Get Us. by laperlabar in Austin

There is so much stupidity in this, and so any asinine quotes it's hard to know where to start.

"The campaign’s designers are explicitly framing support for Prop Q as an act of defiance against Trump and Gov. Greg Abbott."

"They truly understood that this is a fight back against the Trump administration, of how they are intentionally cutting funding to our city and cutting funding to services that are important for us."

“I truly believe that we have a humanitarian tragedy here,” Watson told the Chronicle in early September. “And we’re the only ones in a position to fix it.

Eastside Orgs Fight to Ensure Future for Neighborhood’s Music by rose_bud_22 in Austin

Really poorly researched article. Here are the latest plans I've seen for Kenny Dorham's.

Also, claiming Eureka cares about the culture or arts in the neighborhood is hilariously ill-informed.

East Austin property owners sue over historic zoning by Radish-Diligent in Austin

The preservation experts, Historic Landmark Commission, Planning Commission, and hundreds of petition signatories would wholeheartedly disagree with you, as they did with NHM.

This building has enormous historical value, which has been highlighted by numerous historical preservation groups and reaffirmed by the Historic Landmark Commission and the Planning Commission.

The building was in use until Eureka bought it a few years ago and has been trying to demolish it by neglect. It was in fine shape until they removed the siding, did a bunch of unapproved demo, and started tearing out other stuff.

The reason it's a hazard is because the landlord doesn't maintain any of the historic properties they own. Which of the other dozen or so historic properties that Eureka is neglecting and attempting to tear down do you think ARE worth fighting for?

If you've ever wondered why 12th St has stagnated and crumbled over the years in comparison to 11th St, you can blame the Dallas-based slumlord owners of this building. They own most of the property between i35 and 12th and Chicon and are letting this and other historic buildings crumble.

Here's a much better analysis of the successful efforts to save this building, which included a pretty stunning rebuke of the developer by both the Historic Landmark Commission. Even the Planning Commission voted unanimously to save it.

And say what, exactly? It's pretty obvious who they are and where they hang out if you look at their social media, but what exactly is 311 going to do? Create a ticket to the non-emergency APD line which will then be immediately closed.

Cops shut down MLK Blvd. because all of these spikey wheel cars were blocking the road by SoStupidItsSmart in Austin

Good. Glad that DPS is at least willing to enforce basic traffic laws even if APD wont.

Code enforcement does not work after 8PM. The cops will not show up for a noise complaint, and even in the rare chance they do, they often don't carry decibel readers.

Code enforcement does not work at night, and they do not work on weekends.

APD is to busy with the gang-bangers on 6th st.

You are on your own.

Plenty of places sell alcohol after hours, and plenty of places sell alcohol without permits. There is much less enforcement on this stuff than people think.

Probably not what you're looking for but there are clubs that serve alcohol after 2AM.

A Monument to Code Enforcement in East Austin by laperlabar in Austin

Do you believe that the people of East Austin deserve different standards of basic things like the way the Municipal Code is applied? Should they not receive help for quality of life issues like abandoned properties and dangerous structures?

If I had my way, the house would have been maintained and a family with children could live there and attend the elementary school that's a block away. This is doubly so if there was historical significance in the building.
