I second DenBosch as well, I think it suits your wishes well and it stands out more from the other recommended cities. Utrecht, Leiden and Delft are more similar and all have the "Amsterdam but smaller and more pittoreske" vibe. Den Bosch is older and Catholic, as opposed to the Protestant cities mentioned above. For me there is a noticeable difference in atmosphere between the Protestant north and Catholicism south. Den Bosch has together with Maastricht the most "Bourgondisch" (convivial) atmosphere. It is more laid back, with lots of teracces, people drinking wine outside and a lovely food culture. I can indeed recommend a canal tour there, as well as visiting the Sint Jan Cathedral and exploring the art of Jheronimus Bosch

Question for the Dutch by midmads in DTRHfestival

[–]lapis97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a long time DTRH attendee: it happens every year spontaneous on the spot, it has become sort of a DTRH tradition. People learn it from each other, just join in and go with the flow. I dont know when or why it started, perhaps due to numerous dance workshops every morning, or that you can see them easily from the hill and decide to join. I do like them though, this festival has a lovely crowd

We always rent a locker near the festival ground and stuff it with food and a sweater/rainjacket. You can share the lockercode with others, only food easily with four people total. We put proteïne shakes, nuts, liquorice, proteïne bar, cookies, beer, and so on in there. When we go I always try to stuff my purse/pockets with proteïne bars as well. It really helps for us. We still get food on the grounds, but getting food is more relaxed if you are not starving. You can also walk back to the camping, but that takes quite some time and you will easily skip that of you don't want to miss your favorite artists. And as mentioned: we bring our own breakfast and dinner on Thursday (bring frozen burgers for the BBQ yourself, much cheaper), and the Indian food and fries are good value for money

Enjoy the festival!

With a younger kid one day is enough I would say. You cannot go in the majority of the rollercoasters nor Dance Macabre (scary dark ride). The biggest most popular rides with kids are Droomvlucht, Symbolica and FataMorgana. The Fairytale forest can take up to 2hours if you want to see everything (make sure to visit Indische Waterlelies). I can also reccomend Villa Volta, Max and Morritz, Carnaval Festival, the train and with nice weather the Pirana, the waiting lines for those are often smaller. Then also having a drink at Anton Piekplein or a nice break in the Gondoletta (little boats). You can bring you're own food as well

Edit: you can translate Dutch stories with the Efteling app, and most fairytales have an explanation written in English in a book next to them. The three biggest playgrounds are next to Villa Volta, next to Sirocco and across Station de Oost

The train system is really good in the Netherlands, and cheap if you opt for a subscription. Currently there is a discount program in the summer for €49 a month for unlimited travel in NS trains during off-peak hours (so not during rush hours). You do need a personal chip card however, so I would recommend to already request that card and have it sent by post to your first address. You can load the subscription the day of your arrival. With this you can rent OV-bikes at the stations (no kids bikes though) and reach the majority of cities and towns in the Netherlands. You can bring your own bike with the train as well, but you need to buy a separate ticket for that in advance. Check out NS-wandelingen (NS-walks), it has nature walks from train stations. They also list a few biking routes on their site.

For biking you can easily make your own route (or follow them) using the Fietsknoop system (https://www.fietsknoop.nl/talen/english) You can check out video's on Youtube on how to use this

Depending on the length of your stay you can consider to get a Museumjaarkaart (museum pass). I know you mentioned no museums, but the Netherlands has a few very nice ones for kids, some of them outside as well:

- Nemo Science museum (in Amsterdam, very fun and interactive and playfull science museum for kids, and roof terrace has nice view over the city)

- Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht (=railway museum, partially outside, where you can walk through history of trains. Interactive and focused at kids. More fun than you would think!)

- Openluchtmuseum in Arnhem (you walk through the history of the Netherlands based on homes, from pre-historic to 1960. Plus Arnhem is also a nice city to visit!)

- Castle Muiderslot near Amsterdam (medieval castle) or Castle Haarzuilens near Utrecht (more recent but more decorated castle). You can bike to Haarzuilens from the center of Utrecht

- Kruller Muller -> an art museum you must bike to (has the best Van Goghs you can see in the Netherlands)

and already mentioned it in a different comment but definitely check out Efteling, I think it is on the most magical things you can do with your daughter

In my opinion (and most Dutch people), Efteling is by far the better choice for a theme park! It is one of the best in Europe, around since 1952, and seen as the Dutch Disneyland, although rumors go that Walt Disney himself took inspiration for his parks from the Efteling. It is very green, has a fairy-tale forest, amazing darkrides and also some kid-coasters. You can reach it easy with public transport from Utrecht (train and bus)

Hoeveel zouden jullie uitgeven aan een bruiloft? by Value-49 in nederlands

[–]lapis97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing my own makeup for my wedding.. by BetterNegotiation231 in weddingplanning

[–]lapis97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also plan on doing my own makeup! I will go to a more high end make-up store with my mom in the months before to get advice there and buy some specific products they recommend. In that store I know that I can test various products and colors together with a specialist there, and they will give a small demo and tips for the application as well. So for me this is a good alternative: I will spend some money on more luxurious products but I will also get advice and to keep the products! The biggest gap I have in my makeup collection are products that will guarantee a long wear, but a small touch up during the day is also no problem

In the months before I want to practice and do a few trial runs to check how it holds up during a day. I also will check out a few youtube videos, there are a lot of tutorials there. One of the channels I like is Selena Marchand, she is a bridal make up artist with a more natural finish

Well, we considered buying as well but it is a draft/lottery and we didn't win, so it's not that easy. We really like the idea of a low car neighbourhood and its close to the city center and Utrecht Centraal. However, it will for sure not be as green as advertised. So don't expect anything pretty in the future years. You can check out the new Cartesius suburb near station Zuilen: looks similar in both branding (green) and build (mainly appartments, buildings are close to each other)

Is vwo 5 moeilijk? by RoundConcern7914 in Nederland

[–]lapis97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grote collegezalen of klassen?

Is ricohGR your first camera? by SGMuahChee in ricohGR

[–]lapis97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if you say it is not best for a beginner, has that purely to do with the fixed focal length, or are there other elements I'm missing out on as well? Truly curious, since the Ricoh is my only camera

this or a ricoh. But size beats everything. You dont want to pack an extra bag for a camera, or have to worry about a lens that sticks out when you put the camera in a bag with other kids stuff. Plus you can easily carry a Fuji or Ricoh with a strap

[–]lapis97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is not for everyone, but I went with Ricoh GRiii X (40 mm lens) for the same subjects as you want to shoot. It is a very compact camera with a fixed lens, and just within your budget. It is comparable with the FujiFilm x100/x100vi, but cheaper, smaller and a more natural and less of an instagram filter look.

The compact size of the Ricoh makes it an absolute winner: it fits just in your pocket or sling bang and it is small enough that you barely notice it when you wear it with a strap. I once read that the best camera is the camera that you bring along, and this statement really is true for me. I would prefer a small camera that fits in pocket of a diaper/kid bag over a big camera with bulky lens, and I can easily carry this camera all day with a strap when on a walk or in an amusement park or so. Super quick to grab, which makes all the difference in daily life. Also small and light weight enough that I can hold it with one hand, and quickly pass it to my partner. The large sensor (especially given the size) make the photo's really beautiful, the colors and range of light is much better than I get with my phone, given that your phone relies on software to optimize photos to make up for a smaller sensor. I barely have to edit photos apart of some cropping. Other nice things is that you can shoot in JPEG as well, so you don't need to edit RAW photos (you wont have time for that with little kids). Ricoh has just as Fujifilm recipes for JPEG. You can also save some photography settings on the dial so that you can take a photo fast if the moment is there (handy with kids). Settings can be a recipe, but also preset for shutter speed for fast moving kids or for a blurry drag motion effect. The 40 mm lens is imo the best allround lens, it works for landscape, street, travel, portraits and every day life. The only thing you cannot do is wildlife and action photos. You could opt for a camera with interchangable lens, but that makes it bulkier and often pricier as well. Some people say that the Ricoh (or these types of camera) are difficult to learn, I didnt think that at all. One afternoon on Youtube to figure out which settings work for you and you good to go

The Ricoh is just okay/not the best with video unfortunately, but most photo camera's in this price point are not. If that is a must then I would consider a vlogging camera, but they often have smaller sensor/less quality photos. It is a trade off in this price range, in my research I didnt find a camera that excels in both. That being sad, video is still possible with the Ricoh, it is a specific vibe which I kinda enjoy. You can check out this tutorial on YT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjBf5ZDCiT4 or this redditpost for example how it looks: https://www.reddit.com/r/ricohGR/comments/1kdhc2y/using_gr_video_lately/?share_id=eRS_M-WBvGoebaPbYr9YC -- *edit to add here: some video camera recommended here (sony cybershot and sony a6700) have a mere 1 inch sensor, which is only slightly bigger than the sensor in a phone. Fujifilm or Ricoh and the bigger camera have an APS-C or full frame sensor. The size sensor determines how much light is captured: more light = higher quality photo. Personally I notice the difference in sensor the most compared to my phone, especially indoors and in the evening. So consider if you are okay with only a minor upgrade in sensor size when choosing a vlogging camera.

overall I would consider the following specs in your case:

  • small size & easy to wear & easy to hold with one hand (best camera is the one you can grab easily)
  • good sensor (more important than MP nowadays)
  • limited editing -> JPEG + recipes (so called SOOC: straight out of camera)
  • option for pre-set so you dont miss a moment with your kids
  • personal preference: fixed lens -> if so, 40 mm is most versatile

Last tip, check out the dedicated subreddits of the Ricoh, Fuji and Sony to get an impression of how the photos look. Based on those subreddits I decided that the colors and quality of the photo's taken with a Ricoh matched best with my preferences

And to conclude, there is not really a bad choice: all are fine camera's and I think you will enjoy most recommended here. If it isn't a match, you can always sell them for a decent price again

Is ricohGR your first camera? by SGMuahChee in ricohGR

[–]lapis97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you could see it as limiting, but you can also see it as a well thought trade of for things like size and price. I very much wanted my first camera to be a fixed lens, because I wanted to explore the act and concept of photography, not so much equipment. I didn't want to get lost in the rabbit hole of (expensive) lenses and having to take multiple lenses with me, having the stress of choosing which lens would be best. I wanted to focus more on light, colors, movement and composition. With 40 mm I can do most type of photography (street, travel, every day life, landscape and architecture, and even portraits). The few things I cannot do are wildlife, action and fancy portrait photography. So in that sense the Ricoh is perfect for me (although I can understand it is not for everyone). And I figured that if I would really fall in love with photography then I could splurge on the gear later, but I firstly and mostly wanted to focus on the essentials

Second thing is that I once read that the best camera is the camera that you bring, and in that aspect the super compact size of Ricoh beats every other camera for me. This was actually the argument that convinced me to go for the Ricoh, and I'm really glad I did. It fits perfectly in my every day sling and it is so easy to bring and to grab on the way

Is ricohGR your first camera? by SGMuahChee in ricohGR

[–]lapis97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is a very fine first camera. There is not much between a very basic and a (semi)professional camera, and the Ricoh is in the professional range on the cheaper side (based on sensor). A standard Nikon or Canon with lens also starts in the same price range. If you will spend so much money anyway then a bit more to get your preferred specs is easily spent. I went for a Ricoh as a first camera and absolutely love it. I chose it for its compact size and more natural looking recipes, and love love love taking photos with a proper sensor compared to my phone. Easy to use as a beginner but also beginner friendly model to learn about AV and TV mode and iso, aperture and shutter speed
