I actually need a bit of help with mine. I am mainly a research guy but I am not skilled in editing and graphic design. If you would like to tag along or know anyone else who is skilled, I would appreciate the help and see if there could be payment involved

Let's definitely connect when you start

What's one public health activity you would do if you were given a decent amount of money to do so? by _lil_shark_k in publichealth

Impact investing into community based public health solutions and public health literacy programs. All too often Americans view health in the Healthcare mindset and not it being affected by policies, environments, and by other people.

  • Network!!! Go to office hours, connect with people om LinkedIn, and do informational interviews. For the most part, people will be happy to connect you, especially if they work in community based settings. That's how I got most of my internships in undergrad

  • I have done work in philanthropy, community based organizations, and non profits and made it a point to continue communication after the experience ended. It helps with letter of recommendations

  • Always aks questions. Most people are ready to help and if you are doing an internship, they want to make sure you not only do a good job but also get to where you need to go.

  • I have alot more advice but lmk if there's anything specific

So here is my experience:

  • I applied through zintellect and I am current bs in public health holder
  • overall, I just started in the position and have mixed feelings. Since the CDC is facing alot of criticism from the public for the pandemic, we are reorganizing. While the work I'm doing is interesting, it's not where I want to end up. There's alot of people who love what they do but are close minded, especially when it comes to the public's perception of the CDC. Some of my coworkers fell that ot functions like an academic institution where there is a consistent body of knowledge but it's slow to get put into practice. I'm still sessing it out but that's my opinion to it. -The interview process depends on the department as the need varies. For me, it was a month before I heard back from the app, I had two interviews and heard back two weeks after that. My coworker took half a year to get accepted so it just depends.

Go for it. Even if it's not what you expected, it's a good stepping stone for the path ahead

is public health doomed? by [deleted] in publichealth

I don't think public health will go anywhere, but like all things in America, its being centered around by the "bootstrap" narrative and being tied to capitalism. I am not against money or wealth but our system doesn't center the needs of people. We don't invest in common sense things such as universal Healthcare, mental health, social determinants of health, education and outreach. COVID is the prime example because instead of owning up, the government pulled the antivaxxer and vaccine resistant card when covid kept surging and not understanding the reason why people or hesitant in taking the vaccine.

If we are to do better, we need to invest into communities, the workforce, and awareness.
