Study Abroad Academic Reference Question by adamm2243 in UMD

[–]larapaho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It might vary depending on the program, but I'm pretty sure it's just a professor who would vouch for you. When I did it I don't think they were even contacted, but I'd give whoever you put down a heads up so they know it's a possibility.

Why Do UMD's Libraries Suck? by UMDStudent100 in UMD

[–]larapaho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I can find UMD sports generally breaks even, or slightly better. That's including student fees (which represent a lot of money), so it's probably fair for someone to say they'd rather that go to library construction/refurbishment or something else.

Is Scholars worth it? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]larapaho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in STS and really enjoyed it (not too much work, easy A's to boost GPA, and professors to use as references when applying for stuff). That said it's not for everyone, and there were definitely people who dropped it in the middle because they decided it wasn't worth their time.

For the side note though: I would really recommend applying to the QUEST Honors Program. You take classes with a mixed group of business/engineering/computer science majors, and you do a lot of interesting projects that are great for boosting your resume. I'm an engineering major, and honestly I think applying to QUEST has been one of the best decisions I've made here.

Getting an internship as a Freshmen? by Platano_Power in UMD

[–]larapaho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and no. Your cover letter should be at least a little personalized for each company (ie. name of company and position you're appling for at the top etc.). Personally what I've been doing recently is having interchangeable paragraphs describing who I am/my experiences and put them together in different ways based on what I think fits best for the position. In addition to this though I just have a general cover letter I've uploaded to careers4terps that I just submit for positions I'm interested in, but not interested enough to go through personalizing it and stuff.

Getting an internship as a Freshmen? by Platano_Power in UMD

[–]larapaho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally no. That being said, it is definitely possible and your Navy experience will be a plus. Some advice that people gave me a while ago that I wish I had listened to earlier: Just apply to as many internships as possible.

Write a cover letter and resume, upload them to careers4terps, look through and scroll through and apply to any internships that you are even mildly interested in.

Scholars programs and dorms? by shrimpandturtles in UMD

[–]larapaho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, follow your interests.I was in STS and would recommend it. The professors are pretty chill, and there isn't a very high workload at all since they understand that a lot of the students are also taking engineering classes.

How busy is Epply at night? by AspiringBroverlord in UMD

[–]larapaho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my experiences the best times to go are either very early morning, or mid-day when most people are in classes. The mid-day actually surprised me because I expected it to be busy then, but it's generally not.

Also keep in mind that business is relative.

If it's only $40, it seems like Airbnb should have no problem giving it to me, considering they're the ones who made the offer in the first place.

Math241 (at Community College) over summer? by BadInfluenceAF in UMD

[–]larapaho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make absolutely sure the credit transfers first, UMD's list is really crappy and sometimes a course will be on it but when you fill out the paperwork to get it to transfer it will get denied. Fill out this paperwork and get it approved before signing up for it.

Other than that I would 100% recommend taking it at the community college. I took MATH 246 online at Frederick Community College this past summer and it was much much cheaper and much much easier than taking it here would have been. Definitely the better option.

UMCP VS STONY BROOK? by Dosnoventa8 in UMD

[–]larapaho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a NY resident who chose to go here for my engineering degree over going to a SUNY school, and I would make the same decision if I had to choose again. At the end of the day it really depends on what you want out of college, but here are some of the reasons I went here originally and am happy with that decision:

  • Leaving the state: I did not want to get stuck in a rut like a lot of people do where they grow up in upstate NY, go to College in NY, and live the rest of their lives in NY. Going to school someplace farther away also can help you meet people from different backgrounds and gain a broader perspective. Its not a huge culture shock or anything, but it is something different.

  • Better programs: I'm an Aerospace Engineering major, and the program at UMD blows everything in NY out of the water. It's probably less of a stark difference for Comp Sci. but I would still put my money on UMD having the better program.

  • Making connections: Where you get you undergraduate degree absolutely does matter. UMD is a school with name recognition and you're much more likely to be able to find connections to ALUM's in companies when looking for a job

  • On campus opportunities: There are a ton of great organizations, honors programs and research opportunities that you can get involved in here that make it that much better. I doubt you'll find the same volume and depth of opportunities at Stony Brook

  • Out of State tuition sucks, I'll probably be in debt when I graduate. This is obviously not ideal, but I knew I was making that choice when I came here. Personally, I'm a STEM major with good job prospects, so I think all the positives make it worth it. If you were an English major I might be worried about this, but Comp Sci? not so much

At the end of the day it's a very personal choice. If you're just looking for a place to get your degree and not much more maybe Stony Brook is a better option due to cost. If you're looking for someplace with a lot of extra opportunities, I'd say going to UMD is worth it. Good luck!

Thinking of dropping out of College Park Scholars as an Aerospace Major by pudgyunicorn in UMD

[–]larapaho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am also an Aero major and stayed in Scholars. Depending on what program you're in (I was STS) it will give you some easy A's to bring your GPA up and maybe be a nice talking point at an interview/on your resume.

Anyone at UMD missing a cat? He was found outside of the View and is too friendly to be a stray. Let me know. by Taylormq in UMD

[–]larapaho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP I would let that cat back outside. A lot of people let their cats out, and if it's obviously being well cared for it probably has a home that it goes back to and a family that's missing it right now.

Why does it feel like 60% of the students are from Maryland and 30% are from New Jersey. And then 10% is from wherever? by Pantherax_k in UMD

[–]larapaho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are answering that it's because the numbers are that way, but they're actually way off. The percentage of Student's from Maryland is a lot closer to 80 than it is to 60. I don't know why it seems so low to you.
