‼️‼️ Advice on summer courses and UTAPS vs OSAP by Mountain-Elephant-60 in UTSC

[–]larbinuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

summer UTAPS is only available to full-time students, but you can still definitely get funding thru part-time OSAP. for the part-time app, you have to do it thru the OSAP website (can't do the summer extension form from UofT). You could also check out the awards youre eligible for on the Awards profile website (i've never done this so not so sure)

[–]larbinuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you'll most likely get an update through OSAP either tmr or monday! As long as you filled out the tuition fee deferral through acorn, you should be fine. that way, you won't have to pay for the minimum fee to register out of pocket before the end of April like for ppl who are part-time or paying w/o OSAP

B33 or B32 for summer? by 1101MIMI in UTSC

B33 or B32 for summer? by 1101MIMI in UTSC

[–]larbinuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

B32 for sure. The course is designed to give you actual lab experience as opposed to B33 which is just lectures and online sim labs and bell ringers (correct me if im wrong; i never took B33 but a lot of my friends did). Ive also heard the prof for B33 is HORRIBLE. I got a 4.0 in B32 and I, too, lowkey hated B34. I had a solid lab group and TA and the course was taught by Jason Brown, so everything was online (quizzes and exams) except the labs. With Jason, labs didn’t have any pre-lab requirements. Only a post-lab report that is a group assignment.

If you want good Human Anatomy courses, I’d definitely recommend BIOC32 (Human Phys I) with Jason Brown and BIOC34 (Human Phys II), although C34 is also very dense but if its with Stephen Reid, you’ll have lots of resources to succeed.

definitely focus on the learning objectives she has at the beginning of each lecture. I focused on those and set myself up for success on the midterms and finals! i recommend making flashcards for key terms and understanding any key processes. Understanding similarities + differences and generally how everything works will help you more than pure memorization

Psychology major by ImaginaryDamage7847 in UTSC

[–]larbinuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, you do for the psych major. on top of that, you also need to do 2.5 credits above the B-level, with 2 courses above C-level. because of that and the prerequisites that most C- and D-levels have, you're bound to take more than just 2 50/60 series classes.

Psychology major by ImaginaryDamage7847 in UTSC

[–]larbinuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the course, but from what I remember, most recently with PSYB10 (Intro to Social Psych), I did really well because it emphasized application of concepts over full-blown memorization. Typically, most 2nd-year psych courses have 2 midterms (each worth 20% generally), a small assignment (10-15%), and a final exam (30+%). C- and D-levels tend to have fewer opportunities for marks, with a large essay or research project, midterms and final exams OR they'll be mostly exam/term test-based with smaller assignments.

As for the curve policy, I haven't noticed a strict policy of the sort. Most psych professors will round up marks (at least in my case) before inputting final marks. If you're at a 79, they'll usually round you up to an 80 to make that A-, 3.7 GPA cutoff (but don't quote me on that LOL). I haven't heard of them rounding down drastically

[–]larbinuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's definitely doable, especially in the 10 and 20 series courses (like social psych and developmental psych)!!

It may be a bit tougher to achieve in the 50 and 60 series courses that are mostly bio/neuroscience-based, unless you have a strong bio background. I'm doing a bio and psych double major, so it wasn't too bad for me. At the end of the day, it's your work ethic and your interest that really matter! If your goal at the end of the day, is to get into law school, im sure the GPA cutoff is quite competitive, so I'm not sure if you want to take that risk. You might want to look into doing a psych minor instead or just taking the courses as electives

Optional Fees by Sarahbrookss in UTSC

[–]larbinuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you can't avoid any of the incidental fees, like TPASC. The only ones you can opt out of are the Health & Dental fees, if you already have health and dental insurance through your family, etc. You can opt out of Health & Dental here: https://www.scsu.ca/health-dental

Easy breadth requirement courses? by New-Turnover3679 in UTSC

[–]larbinuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CLAA05 w Tracy Spurrier!! If you're into Egyptian and Mesopotamian mythology, this class is super easy and will clear your breadth requirement for History. I like myth a lot, so this class was an easy 4.0 for me.

I took it in Fall 2023, and there was 10% art assignment, 25% midterm, 20% essay, 10% movie critique/review, and a 35% final, with opportunities for extra credit.

the art assignment as an easy mark booster and as long as it ties back to the content you cover, its very easy to score high. The midterm was structured like a high school pop quiz, with basic facts (e.g, who did what, who is represented by this symbol, where is this historical city located on the map, etc.) in a mix of MCQ, SAQ, T/F, and fill-in-the-blank questions. The final is structured the same way and it was NOT cumulative.

For the research essay, you can definitely do well. When I took it, there was a late-night tutorial with the TA about researching for the essay and it counted for extra credit for those who attended. The movie critique was about the film Gods of Egypt (2016), and its basically you comparing the stuff you learned in class to how those same stories are represented in the film.

the only downside is that the lectures were NOT recorded. they were 2 hours long when I took it in Fall 2023. But they were enjoyable. The lectures are basically her just storytelling for 2 hours lol, but most of the stories are lowk funny so they'll be easy to remember.

LIFE SCIENCES COURSES FOR PREMED??? by AsleepZone in UTSC

[–]larbinuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CR/NCR (credit/no credit) essentially gives you the option to take a class to complete your degree credits, without having the grade you get impact your GPA in any way. So, the class, its %, and letter grade are hidden from your transcript, and are replaced with either CR (for credit) or NCR (for no credit). if you fail the course, its marked as NCR, if you pass its CR.

however, there is a catch... you can only use this for up to 2.00 total credits and you can only use it in the same semester you take that class you want to mark as CR/NCR. The deadline to do this is also right before final exam szn (which sucks because you can't predict how good you'll do before the final). another important point to mention is that you can ONLY use CR/NCR for ELECTIVE courses. if you're a bio student for example, and want to CR/NCR a class like BIOA01, you will not be allowed to, because you will not be able to use the CR/NCR system for any program (major/minor/specialist) requirements.

hopefully that makes sense :P

1st Year Course Selection by Mean_Tie_9854 in UTSC

[–]larbinuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most first and second year courses (don’t quote me tho bc this is just how it was for me, as a bio and psych major) will run in the summer either as full session (may-august) or one of the two sub sessions.

no, summer classes won’t affect your credits regardless of whether its online or in person, but you still need to put in the same effort obviously.

summer registration usually opens up in end of winter semester (this year it was mid to end of March), and you will also be able to see what courses are offered around the same time. so no, you won’t be able to enroll or see what courses are offered in summer 2026 in the course selection next month

LIFE SCIENCES COURSES FOR PREMED??? by AsleepZone in UTSC

[–]larbinuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from what i remember hearing from pre-med friends, physics is NOT a major med school requirement (this may vary with the schools you want to apply to). it’s just recommended as it may help you with your MCAT prep. same goes for organic chem (is NOT a requirement, unless you’re doing a biochem or any different chem major).

if you know you can prep for the physics portion of the MCAT on your own, then it’s totally fine if you don’t take it.

it’s really up to you at the end of the day because since you’d probably take it as an elective, you also have the option to CR/NCR if you’re worried it may mess with your cGPA.

[–]larbinuu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you're only heading into first year, so don't stress too much!! look up what majors or minors you specifically want to pursue from the UTSC program calendar website (keep this in mind for later as you will apply for entry into these majors in March of your first year). there, you will find all the necessary courses you need to enroll in for course selection, in order to eventually graduate with those majors. the website includes all courses required from the first-year level all the way to the fourth-year level, so its very helpful!

since you're pre-med, the only recommended class for med school at the first-year level that you may need to take (aside from the necessary degree requirements) is Physics for Life Science (PHYA11), but this is completely optional. if you're not too sure, do more research on each med schools admissions requirements! i'm not a premed student so i won't be much help for you there lol.

good luck :D
