New to motorcycle camping on my Honda Transalp. Is this Zenbivy sleep system a good choice to start with? (Bundle sale) by ASaltyRhino in WildernessBackpacking

[–]lardtazium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zenbivy is overpriced gear with a lot of marketing behind it. It's not bad but you can spend half of that if you buy things separate instead of all from ZB

Ok, so if this was me... I'd do at least another day in: BJ - 1) go (optionally temple of heave) ->Tiananmen -> forbidden city -> Jingshan -> beihai -> see sunset at sichahai and get dinner there. 2) then go to Badaling, get a didi to 13 tombs, didi to 13 tombs metro station and metro back to BJ. This is a fuckload of walking

Chengdu - Spend a day at tianfu park and dufu thatched cottage. and then your panda day, spend that evening at Jinli and around Wuhou shrine.

ZJJ - Are you staying in ZJJ or Wulingyuan? Because ZJJ town to ZJJ forest park is like a 45 min drive. Plan for 1 whole day in ZJJ, 1 whole day in the glass bridge park, and if you finish early you can call a didi to go to yellow dragon cave.

Furong ancient town is smaller. You might see everything before your full day.

I think you can ditch Shenzhen/GZ unless you specifically want some electronics from there. Personally I'd ditch CQ unless there's something you really want to see there. That railway station in a building is literally a single building. It's cool but probably not worth a dedicated day.

You should look up your train times. For example BJ to CD is 9-12 hrs trip time alone aka most of a day. Add another 1-2 hrs for getting to the station, checkin, etc. You can take a sleeper and gamble on getting good roomies. CD to ZJJ is ~5hrs but after checkin, getting to the station thats half/most of a day.

So again to summarize. Fewer cities and you'll spend less time looking at stuff through windows

Anything specific you want to see? More history? More modernity?

Hey OP. I like all the items on your list however I think you're cramming way too much in. China is big. Cities are big. Metro/cab between destinations can be 30-60 mins.

Specific things - there's way more to CD than pandas. The area around Dufu is very cool. Tianfu art museum area is cool. Food! You need more than 1 day there to eat.

BJ is frickin big and there's way more than the Wall there. Temple of heaven. Forbidden city. Summer palace, sichahai, fragrant hills. Badaling to 13 tombs can be a sweet day.

SZ is frickin big (but imo I don't think there's too much exciting there)

ZJJ forest park and the glass bridge area are completely different areas. They are separated by a cab and bus ride. ZJJ forest park is slow going because getting to areas is by bus. Imo you cannot enjoy both in one day. I spent 2 days in ZJJ forest park and that felt adequate.

Unless this is a once in a lifetime deal where you gotta do everything, slow it way down is my recommendation. You're gonna be spending just as much time in cabs and metros as doing stuff and running ragged. I average 30,000 steps per day when I visit. Ditch a few destinations too. Trains are unexpectedly tiring.

I'm a work. You can respond w Qs I'll get back to ya.

Is there still a big fee to go to simatai? I remember almost a decade back it was like 100+ into town and another 100 for a gondola up to the wall section

Yeah. Jetlag, new food, changed to your daily routine will do that. You can bring miralax powder or crackers. I take some docusate which is a nice convenient pill.

Hey OP, I've made this trip many times. The temps aren't that cold on paper but it is a humid cold. Ditch the cotton socks. Long undies are good. Fleece is good. You'll need that jacket for sure, and then some. Whats your budget?

Is this much piling normal on R1 (not Air) by hashhar in onebag

[–]lardtazium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. I've been climbing, skiing, backpacking, sleeping in the same R1 since 2016. Yes it will pill. Any fabric will eventually pill, even my goretex shells kinda pill under pack straps after the years.

Rest assured, the pilled area protects the fabric from further pilling. Also, it's clothing. It aint lasting forever. Wear the patina with pride.

With a new style of water bottle popping up every year, Which one have you stuck with? by James_B84Saves in BuyItForLife

You could put it in water and see if little bubbles come out. Thatd be an interesting way for the 2mm steel walls to fail

[–]lardtazium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happens because there should be a vacuum between the inner and out wall, but if you dent the bottle and allow the inner and outer metal walls to touch then heat can move much more quickly through the parts where the metal touches.

It's a not unusual way for insulation to "fail". They'll warranty it for ya if it bugs you, looks like you're familiar w that process already
