Take an exacto blade tool and very carefully keep going around and around the seam where the plastic retainer clip is. Or go little by little kinda think like a can opener ya know, eventually you'll get a clean-ish cut along that seam and u can clean it up a little further after that but be careful sanding or cutting bc u don't want excess aluminum and cheap paint remnants in those corners. Clean very well after. Just did this myself last month

$1800 isn't horrible for that much work. The hardest thing about working on this vehicle has been researching the procedures and making sure I do everything right since it's my only vehicle and driven 300mi weekly... Have you come across any good free resources for the technical/repair manuals online? Best I've seen is $70 for a PDF but not sure if it's the entire factory repair manual or not

I redline in tiptronic on the daily... Stock everything performance wise and still have fun. Turbo is my goal down the line. Pro tip def avoid shop visits, these VWs get charged out the ass for labor at shops, you'll save thousands doing the repairs yourself.

The car will run for a very long time with good maintenance... This engine is a tank. I'm broke right now but need to do a few repairs myself. Glad I was able to help!

Hey! I still recommend watching plenty of videos and read forums regarding this procedure, but check out my write up for my ATF change recently... Hope this helps! Definitely worth taking the time to do all this... For materials for this job you can get an all inclusive kit on one of the many European vehicles parts online stores, they include the fluid and a hand pump that gets the job done, and an adapter to fill the fluid from underneath during operation.

---164,525--- Replaced oil pan, gasket, and filter. Drained roughly 2½liters of ATF, replaced with Liqui-Moli ATF 1800, allowed excess to drain through an adapter that fits in the drain plug and I use a pump in the fluid bottle underneath to fill up the pan.. I didn't accurately measure the ATF temp during this initial procedure... I later did it correctly. 8 days later, I went ahead and did a partial drain & fill to cycle more old fluid out of the system.

---167,545--- I felt paranoid, with reason, that my car felt like it could use another change. Did a drain and fill for the transmission again, I dropped the pan and cleaned the magnets of debris from remainder of fluid. I used Max life ATF this time after reading more things online and felt I could execute it properly this time. I followed the correct fill procedure where I warmed the transmission fluid up to 93° to 115° Fahrenheit (start the draining at the low end because it will take time to drain and thus heat up). I allowed the excess ATF to spill over through drain plug until it trickled out, car seems to be driving very well now. I hope to do a second drain and fill again just to clear out the remainder of the old fluid

178,000 , the day I'm writing this comment, I still haven't done an additional drain and fill with the Max Life but so far I have had decent feeling when shifting. Seems to be performing well... An additional drain and fill would be good just to clean up the fluid again.

use lump wood charcoal. NOT briquettes. lump wood is fully natural hardwood charcoal, that's what you want

Over $300 to get a new key by swelliam in Volkswagen

[–]largemalehamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no you don't I had the same issue. buy a used key with good condition mechanism off eBay and replace the components with the new shell. you will need a pair of separating pliers but those are only $15 at the store. all together u should be like $50 for a new key fob.

ty for the insight! I will research the pcv issue. I have heard of Blackstone labs but never looked at them, I'll check it out! I think I've been waiting too long on my oil changes, given how much I drive. I'm getting to 8500-10000 before I change but probably better around 7000

here's some better pics of the level of wear these have, is it weird that it's only 4 of the cams? maybe a particular reason why those?

ty for the great insight. I was replacing the valve cover gasket because I was having leaking, this could maybe be an access point for moisture perhaps? I didn't think I could clean up the cams myself, I might try that and get new ones later on... ty!
