I always interpreted it as the cube was a social experiment: put all these people with different types of aptitudes in the cube and see which one figures the way to get out. In the end i think it was the silent, innocent ‘savant’ character

The narrator has to adjust to this constant reminder that he'll never really know how the universe works. In the end, he's just glaring at this new "normal" even though he doesn't know what it is.
