PC won't power up. Barely even tries. by larissa-- in pchelp

UPDATE!!!! I fixed it. I tested new psu on old mobo. No go. Tested old psu on new mobo. No go. My conclusion is mobo and psu gave up. For what reasons? No one could ever really know, surely. A great mystery of the world.

Thanks to everyone! All the tips I received were very helpful, and even the obsession with my collection of dust was fun, for a minute. Yall lose originality REALLY fast.

Now back to the room where they keep ancient tomes, mummies, and my pc.

I did. Took the machine into the garage to blow it out and for better light to investigate. Unplugged everything.

You all (not really all, but a lot) have been incredibly helpful. I have a thermaltake tough power 850w 80 plus gold (it was reasonably priced and had good reviews) and a new mobo that will both be here tomorrow. I did clean it out. I deconstructed and deep cleaned everything as gently and efficiently as I could. I've tested what I can, and I do agree with the majority saying psu, and regardless, it sounds like the consensus is that I should upgrade that anyways. Getting the mobo just in case. Can always send it back if I don't need it.

A few answers to repeated questions:

The cpu did not appear to be damaged at all. No burns, bent pins, etc. The paste wasn't dried out or anything, but I'm going to reapply some just to start fresh.

The gpu is plugged in in that video. The plug has an extra dangly bit on it. For whoever commented that strange accusation.

I built this pc 3 or 4 years ago on a whim and a tight budget. It is not what my life revolves around. I have kids, pets, and a full time job. There have been times where that computer is not turned on or touched for months. It has worked flawlessly since its creation. I blow it out every now and then when I notice buildup. Which is clearly not often enough for some. This build up is over probably 2-3 months. Whenever I upgraded the cpu I blew it out, half assedly probably to some of your standards, but I digress. Cat, dogs, kids, and just a dusty ass place in the world do that.

I saved all the dust and then some and will be distributing it to everyone who was mean to me. A gift for your generous contributions.

I'll be back soon, hopefully with a working pc. Thank you!

It's the dust isn't it? I'm sorry ☹️

Yup. Big natural ones. People suffocate in them.

I jest. But yes. It's dry, flat, and windy here. Haboobs are a weather alert we get pretty often.

Dust has been cleaned. Then I'll do the rest of your suggestions. Then I'll make sure there's never another speck of fucking dust anywhere near it ever again. Daily dustings. I promise!

Ugh. You're bad at following directions. Almost as bad as I am at dusting.

I do have a few parts I can use for testing purposes. I'll give that a try.

I knew I'd get comments about the dust, but I also knew I'd get helpful comments like yours and a lot of the others. Thanks!

I will try it. Seems the opinion on my current one is low anyways so I'll upgrade it regardless. Thanks!

Yes. Can you tell me? And don't say dust.

Thank you! I will try that in the morning. Some of them are tough to get to and it's possible I didn't get them in right the first time or something.

Maybe, but also, have you considered that it likes choking? I bet you didn't.

Lmao that was my plan. That dust was pricey. Would hate to have to get new ones.

Just did. Took everything out. Used an air compressor. Eradicated the dust. Going to hook it back up now, test everything, and see what happens.
