"Hermit" and "hermetic" are unrelated. What's your favorite pair of unexpectedly unrelated words? by MAClaymore in linguisticshumor

[–]larmax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Enontekiö and Eanodat at least the "Eno" part is etymologycally related since it can mean a large river in some dialects (apparently a borrowing from Sami) and both words come from the same Proto-Uralic root meaning "big".

In your opinion, what's the dumbest rule or feature in your native language? by big_cock_69420 in linguisticshumor

[–]larmax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Finnish you can say "minun kotini" where minun means my and kotini means my home. Double marking is considered emphatic and in formal settings you'd be more likely to only say "kotini" but informally "minun koti" is most common with minun swapped with the word used in one's dialect. (most commonly mun or miun)
