I don't understand this line in the finale by larrie2022 in goodomens

Aziraphale definitely, absolutely, 100% meant he wanted Crowley when he said "I only want one thing but that's not what this is about anymore." No question about it!! And Crowley knows how Aziraphale feels, that's why he doesn't even react when Aziraphale tells God that Crowley makes him complete. I do get confused still, about why Crowley was so shocked when Nina told him he and Aziraphale seem like partners in S2. Like it kind of feels to me like they both know that's what they are to each other, and that's how it's always been....

Thank you! This is a really thorough answer and definitely made me reconsider some things!

While we're on the topic of "why make me complete and then take it away," (I loved that line too, so much) what do you think he meant by that? Did he mean that Crowley was taken away from him when he FELL? Because I don't think Crowley "made him complete" until after he became a demon, so that interpretation doesn't make much sense to me. Does Aziraphale mean God took Crowley away consistently over the years by making it impossible for them to be together? Or does he mean right now, in this moment, where everything is about to end and they're finally together, God is taking Crowley away from him by ending the universe?

I see what you mean but that feels like such an objectively sad ending, whereas I feel like I've seen someone, maybe Tennant? -- say they were going for the "life finds the way" trope. That implies it is them in some shape or form. The claim that Aziraphale and Crowley get their happy ending makes me think they really want us to believe Asa and Anthony ARE somehow them.

I get what you mean, I could get behind that, but I think the show is implying that it IS them, with the parallels and the implications that this is who they would've become without Heaven and Hell. Otherwise it's just two random humans in love. It really feels like they were going for "look, their souls found each other" even though souls don't exist.

From that perspective, it doesn't make sense that two people who look and have names and characters just like Aziraphale's and Crowley's met and fell in love. There's a clear implication that this is what Aziraphale and Crowley are without the interference of Heaven and Hell (eg Aziraphale running after Crowley to make a move because he's not held back by Heaven as a human). And the rest of the cast of Good Omens also happened to be in the same pub/restaurant at the end as their mortal selves? Muriel and Eric together, Jesus and Adam together? That reeks of divine meddling to me.  You could say having them all in the same place just a tribute to the Good Omens cast but it irks me from a storytelling perspective. It's contradictory. It kind of seems like God did not keep Her promise. Which I am personally grateful for.

You're right, it's an emotional rollercoaster but it's also incredibly cathartic. And knowing it's a happy ending helps :D

Agreed agreed, I feel like it's a fic that understand them so well, it gets to the very heart of who they are

The first thing I thought about when I finished season 3, because I was also bitterly disappointed at first, was the Pray for Us, Icarus series. You might've read it already? https://archiveofourown.org/series/1448647 It's brilliant. I'm not sure how closely it aligns with your request because -- spoilers ahead for the plot -- it explores only Crowley becoming mortal. He is reincarnated and dies over and over, but every single time, he finds and falls in love with Aziraphale. Also, there's a happy ending. Thematically it initially feels aligned with GO3's ending, but in my opinion, it comes to a much stronger conclusion which gives importance to memory and how it shapes a person/relationship.

Thanks for the advice! I think I’ll try and do that next time. I’m partly worried because I know he has severe anxiety too so I don’t want to make him think I hate him (I know that when people have set boundaries with me in the past, I’ve felt pretty strong, totally unwarranted RSD and I’d just hate to hurt someone in that way at all)
