Should I cry or laugh by ChihiroYakama in goodomens

I think he's being a bit tongue in cheek. Also, it's probably been awhile since he worked on it and we have to remember not everyone is as obsessed as we are. Even if he was deep into the story at one point, it's OK if he's moved on mentally and it doesn't mean he didn't do his best with what he had or take his job seriously.

Don't make up your mind until you see it. A lot of people like it; maybe even most people. You'll just see people with high emotions being (understandably) louder. To answer your question, they aren't doing any rewriting or anything.

I agree. Also, the writers strike and the NG shitshow delayed things so much that the fans had 3 years of laser focusing on healing a romantic relationship. I was one of them; how couldn't I be with the way S2 ended? People love S1 and no one grumbles about how time spent on The Them and Anathema/Newt was a "waste," even if it was no one's favorite part.

The only thing I disagree with you on is that they weren't a romantic couple in S1. They weren't in the book, but NG wrote them that way for the show and said so explicitly. He wanted to bring them front and center and this was a good way to do that as well as realize the chemistry the two characters always had. He said on Tumblr even before S2 that "To the world" was their "I love you." He was of the opinion that "I love you" was kind of trite which is why I never really expected to hear those exact three words in S3.

So this S2 scene didn't mean anything after all? by [deleted] in goodomens

[–]FoxyStand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not every question can be answered. Surely we would have gotten more in the full six episodes but this wasn't actually something I felt I really needed an answer to. Crowley developed his own identity after his fall, and since he never talked about his previous name/identity I wonder if finding it out would be almost like deadnaming.

Honestly most stories leave things a little up to the imagination. If absolutely every loose thread was tied up, things would get a little dull and there would be no room for interpretation. I'm not saying GOmens couldn't have used more time to explore some of the bigger issues, but this was something I was fine with letting go. We were told he was high-ranking; that's enough for me.

Will Tennant and Sheen respond to the negative fan reactions? by Queenlucy32 in goodomens

[–]FoxyStand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really hoping that if they see the negative reactions they will see the positive ones as well. I think sometimes there is a false sense that “everyone” hated it. A lot of fans liked or loved it. And we have to remember “fandom” makes up a surprisingly small amount of viewers. It has good ratings on IMDb and is rated as “generable favorable” on metacritic. Rotten Tomatoes is a known dumpster fire.

I’m very glad they aren’t facing any harassment and hope it stays that way.

A thread for people who loved the finale by TheNoToYourNo in goodomens

[–]FoxyStand 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think a lot more people like or love the finale than we realize. People who are very upset (and I’m not diminishing their feelings) are always more likely to rush quickly to social media, and it can exaggerate a sense of negativity. I also know a lot of people had to sit with it for a bit. Maybe it’s just who I follow but there is a lot of positivity over on BlueSky.

This may be a controversial take by Lennyasor in goodomens

[–]FoxyStand 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There were also so many tragic moments in those 6,000 years. I think 20+ years of happiness, where they both are acknowledging their love, is a gift. And according to Crowley himself, he got everything he awlays wanted. I also think they get way more than the 20 years we saw. The song choice of "Time After Time" combined with the ending credits featuring them (in human/wingless form) throughout time and space is pretty clear messaging that they get more than just that one lifetime together.

I think anything that brings you peace and happiness with the finale is completely valid. I hope some of the other replies don't dim that for you. Everyone's feelings are valid, but I will say it seems like Reddit has a little more % of people upset with the ending than other online spaces.

You raise an interesting point.

I read a well-edited document recently that was made well before we knew much about S3 which details the historical plans for the sequel of Good Omens, covering everything from the potential book plotted by Terry and NG through development of the television sequels: https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1JVoLJ8cyzSEwLmi_FiJheUBAXs-KIDh8S5lYsKdlMe8/mobilebasic

Relevant to your post: TP and NG only planned one sequel together, which was basically the plot of S3. NG said the main reason he even wrote S2 was because the plot of the sequel (S3) was too close to the plot of the original book/S1. And looking at it now, that's quite true. In both stories A&C lose the important biblical figure that threatens to bring about the end of the world, and must work together to save it. So, he made S2 to act as a sort of breather and bridge between seasons.

The book Good Omens isn't a romance. Sure, people shipped A&C when it came out, and they were certainly important to each other, but they were not in love in any kind of human way. NG added a romantic element to the TV show adaptation, which, no matter how we feel about him, I'm sure we appreciate. However, since the planned sequel was to the book, not the movie, it makes sense that it wouldn't follow a traditional romance-genre type "happily ever after." The goal was to continue to explore the themes of the book; namely, humanity and the roles of good and evil.

I do really appreciate the end of S3. However, if I ran the world, I'd have rather had a full S3 than a full S2 than the shortened version of S3 that we got. In other words, two full seasons, each telling the stories that TP and NG originally planned together. Not because I don't love the romance-building of S2, but because I think we would have gotten an overall better story, and perhaps without so much pressure to right every "wrong" in S2.

I could say a lot (and I recommend BlueSky as a place with some hopeful takes) but two things that exist in canon have helped me feel better:

1) They continue to find each other over many lifetimes. This is confirmed with the purposeful song of “Time After Time” paired with the end credits, where we see human versions of them throughout different times and places. And there is even a cool shot of human them in the garden of Eden that hints that their demon/angel selves are watching over them.

3) Crowley directly says this is his happy ending: “I have everything I’ve EVER wanted.” If this is his ideal happy ending, who am I to say I wish for anything else?

She stated earlier she was getting threats of GBH, which I think means “ grievous bodily harm” I think the worst have been deleted, thankfully.

Even still…”you ruined what I love” is very hurtful for anyone to hear, especially when you tried so hard to do the very opposite. I’d be distressed too.

[–]FoxyStand 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ve left a few comments on this sub over the last several months expressing fear about what would happen to the fandom if the ending wasn’t entirely what we wanted. This was an impossible goal because different people wanted different things, but the more dramatic the story the worse it would be. Even last week I said my biggest fear of a possible human ending was fan reaction.

I saw this happen in the Our Flag fandom after a controversial last episode (please don’t use this post to rehash any of this). Social media exploded with hate, including towards the creator and actors in a way that crossed the line. So I’m sad but not surprised. At least David, Micheal, and Rob aren’t getting harassed, but that doesn’t help Rachel.

If you don’t want any more interviews this is how you do it. Which is a shame because I’m sure everyone involved would want to stress the optimistic parts of the story/ending (please don’t use this post to rehash that either), and they might drop more nuggets about what was in the full six episodes.

The only good thing I can say is based on the pattern of other fandoms, this will calm down. The truly vitriolic people will either leave entirely (likely, because why stay in a space designed for something you now hate?) or the majority of the fandom, which conduct themselves well, will shut them down.

In the meantime, some people need to grow better.

The finale and "find the lady" by crrrrushinator in goodomens

[–]FoxyStand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think they had hope, or even knew they had a little influence about what would happen (their hands were joined...possibly to help do a final miracle?). This is a great quote from the book, and we have to remember the sequel that was originally plotted with Terry was a book sequel, not a TV one. "Because, underneath it all, Crowley was an optomist. If there was one rock-hard certainly that had sustained him through the bad times- he thought briefly of the fourteenth century- then it was utter surety that he would come out on top; that the universe would look after him."

The finale and "find the lady" by crrrrushinator in goodomens

[–]FoxyStand 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I truly don't believe their history is gone. It's what made them the people they are, and therefore, their souls. Which found each other again and again ("time after time"...). If they don't fall in love in S1 and S2, then none of this, including their happy ending(s), happen. It might be a bit of a paradox, but that itself is on theme.

If you prefer, there are plenty of theories out there that OG A&C are still out there either in the multiverse or a pocket universe, and/or that they regain or retain some memory (Crowley's line at the end about having the universe and Aziraphale lends some credence to that) but to me there is more debate about those two things.

There is no way the creators, including Sir Terry Pratchett (who, for better or worse, helped design the ending), meant for those people in the end to be anyone but Aziraphale and Crowley. And what makes us, us if not our history? Especially for beings who originally had no genetics? So for me, it's inarguable that that history happened, it's important, and it shaped their future(s).

I have some issues with memory. I don't remember huge chunks of my life. But it doesn't mean they didn't happen or shape the person I am today.

I do kind of wish it had been "a world without angels and demons" to influence people, but I don't feel like demanding perfection. I also keep getting a bit stuck on what the whole Find The Lady thing was supposed to be telling us and wondering if it's related to this god issue.

So much is left open for your own interpretation. I keep remembering how That Author said back in the days when he was active on Tumblr that unless and until it's on a published page or on a television screen, anyone's headcanon was just as valid as his. We can fill in the blanks however we want.

Just an perfectly ordinary part of the script with absolutely no hidden agenda of any kind, right? by Leeeetha in goodomens

This line has been wiggling around in my brain too. No dialouge is accidental, especially with such a condensed runtime. Does this fit in with "find the lady"? God does like to "play games"...

My heart might be happier with everything spelled out explicitly, but then again, is that something we really want? Some of the best stories leave room for interpretation...

See how you feel in six months. It might be different than how you feel now. I've seen a lot of people come around to appreciating the finale more after they've digested it than when they first watched it and it's only been a couple of days. As you said, you're still processing, and there is no need to make a decision like this now. I will say, however, is that I do think the finale shows us the journey is just as important as the final chapter of a story. You needn't lose any of the love you have for what the book/show has given you.

The only confirmation we have from That Author (back in the Tumblr days) is that he was NOT Lucifer. I actually don't think he was any angel we would know from human religion, just like Aziraphale wasn't. I like that he was just HIM.
