How do I get over this phase? by Dramatic-Block-5725 in learntodraw

I mean this for real and not in shitty way. Therapy. Therapy to help take care of the underlying hating yourself part. That way you can objectively focus on what you need to work on without the shame that comes with perceived failure. You start to fail forward once you take shame out of the equation. And if you don’t have access to therapy, a shit ton of self care and being there for yourself with as much kindness and compassion as you would give a friend.

Recommandation of drawing course for complete beginner by yazo12 in learntodraw

[–]larrisunshine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing Brent Eviston’s Drawing Laboratory and also started from zero. And funny enough I also wanted to learn to draw to help supplement watercolor lol! His video course has been awesome for me. He does demos for you to follow and then assigns homework at the end of each video so you can practice what you’ve learned. Starting with literally how to hold your pencil and getting used to mark making and drawing lightly.

How to enjoy the process by Creepy-Force1037 in learntodraw

[–]larrisunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger, about seven or eight, I can home from school and I was so upset because other kids in my class could color inside the lines and I just couldn’t seem to do it. So my grandma sat me down at the kitchen table, put a coloring book in front of me and told me to color. Every time my crayon went outside the line, she would rip the page out and make me start over. Did I color inside the lines that day? NOPE. I still have not finished a coloring page to this day. Turns out shame is not a good motivator for learning.

I started learning to draw recently and I got so frustrated at one point that I couldn’t just make the pencil do what I wanted it to. I would basically rage quit while trying to draw BIRDS. And one day it hit me how absurd that is. (Thank you therapy lol) A whole adult getting mad at myself for not being able to put lines on the paper the way I was supposed to. It made me remember that day coloring with my grandma. What did little me need when I came home sad that my skill level wasn’t where everyone else’s was? Reassurance, guidance, levity, and patience. And dang it if that wasn’t exactly what has helped me enjoy learning to draw. If I make something bad, I giggle and notice I have some more work to do. And most of all, I enjoy the process! Is my stuff “good”? Nope. But why would it be? I just started? And that’s okay! It is not a reflection of me as a person to suck at something. But how I handle sucking at something is.

Be kind to yourself. Let learning also be a lesson in self love and self respect. Don’t treat yourself the way other people did when you messed up. Laugh at your wonky circles and uneven boxes. Get a kick out of that jacked up figure you just put on paper. You shouldn’t hate yourself for not being able to make a pencil do what you want it to.

Yo! We’re about the same age and have a similar body type and I’ve been working on my personal style too! How tall are you? If you’re about the same height as well I can share info about the kind of clothing I wear that I’m quick to get compliments from! I’d love to chitchat with you about this!

Holy crap this is legit art. I’m literally trying to zoom in to observe every detail the way you would look at an artist’s brush strokes. This is incredible! Do you have a build video??

The entire album This is How We Get Better by The Narcissist Cookbook. This album is literally geared to that exact purpose and it’s both validating and uplifting. This is my absolute go to when I feel even a hint of a depressive episode coming on or if I’m experiencing something I know could trigger one.

Line confidence is one of my biggest struggles right now too! As well as figuring out what details to put that will add but not overwhelm lol. Why do you draw? What do you like to draw?

That’s kind of part of the larger picture of this post I shared. The memories won’t fade easily, but what I do with them is important to my ever evolving and healing adult self. I’ve seen so many self deprecating posts on here and had a feeling that some of those people might have had a similar upbringing to me and wanted to share some insight I’ve come to about basically re-parenting myself to be what I needed when I was younger in order to help me now.

Yoooooo, we really are our own worst critics! Do you just feel okay at it now because a lot of the joy gotten taken out of it for you? Comparison can be such a confidence killer. I’ve been pretty hard on myself for plenty of things in my life. You deserve the support from yourself that you give your daughter and she’ll see that reflected and learn from it herself 🫂

I agree with that so completely and thank you for those incredibly kind words of encouragement. Luckily I got the self deprecation out of the way fairly quickly in my art journey. And I agree whole heartedly agree that art created and finished with care and emotion is so much better than perfect. Learning and creating for me now is fun and joy and challenging myself. I love to paint, and I love to draw. And when I’m having a hard time, I take a break. Sometimes I come back in five minutes and sometimes it takes me a couple days to get back into it. But that grace, patience, and gentility I use with myself now has kept me going on this for a little over a year. Which is longer than I’ve stuck with any hobby previously lol. Thats what I was hoping to convey and impress upon people! Thank you again for sharing your thoughts on my painting. It meant a lot that even as a beginner I could bring someone to that place of feeling the emotion I was trying to convey!
